To improve YouTube Live quality, match your encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the upload speed your connection can sustain—not its download speed. Leave about 20% upload headroom, test with representative motion and audio, then use YouTube Live Control Room and a local recording to identify whether the problem starts at the source, encoder, or network.
Start by finding where quality is being lost
A live stream passes through three stages: the camera or media source, the encoder that prepares and sends the feed, and the network carrying it to YouTube. Check them in that order. If the local recording already looks or sounds wrong, the problem is upstream of YouTube. If the recording is clean but the live feed is not, inspect encoder health and the outbound connection.
YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. Your task is to send a stable, correctly configured feed; a high bitrate alone cannot repair a poor source or an unstable connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Choose a bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec
The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended ingest bitrate values, current guidance accessed October 3, 2026. Values are Mbps. “Minimum” and “recommended” refer to the incoming stream, not a guaranteed quality on every viewer’s device or connection.

Use the column for the codec your encoder actually sends. Choose the highest mode your connection can sustain consistently; if the recommended bitrate causes instability, reduce the target or step down in resolution or frame rate. A lower stable feed is generally more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly drops data. YouTube’s complete table and notes are on its encoder settings page.
Set the other encoder parameters correctly
YouTube’s current guidance recommends these settings for a live encoder:
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, as supported by your encoder and chosen mode.
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Every 2 seconds is recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Picture format: Progressive scan and square pixels.
- Stereo audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo.
- 5.1 audio: 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 is supported only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265; its listed guidance does not support AV1 for HDR.
Encoder controls and labels vary, so look for the equivalent setting rather than assuming every application uses the same wording. Confirm that the resolution and frame rate selected in the encoder match the actual source and the bitrate row you intend to use.

Calculate the upload capacity you need
Measure outbound upload throughput with a speed test, preferably under conditions similar to the planned broadcast. Download speed is not a substitute: the encoder must continuously send data upstream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and counting all feeds, including a backup stream, when applicable. For example, if your primary and backup feeds together send 20 Mbps, plan for at least 25 Mbps of usable upload capacity before accounting for other network activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Check whether other people or devices will share the connection during the event.
- Use sustained, real-world upload performance rather than relying only on the advertised connection rate.
- If the measured connection is weak or unstable, contact your internet provider; changing encoder settings cannot make an unreliable outbound link reliable.
These recommendations are in YouTube’s streaming tips and live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Run a preflight test before the event
- Prepare early. YouTube recommends setting up the event and encoder at least two hours beforehand, then starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event.
- Make the test representative. Include the kind of movement, lighting, and audio you expect during the actual stream; a static test screen will not reveal every motion or sound problem.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm framing, focus, audio, and that the preview is receiving the intended feed before starting the public event.
- Monitor health and messages. Watch stream health and encoder messages during the broadcast rather than assuming the initial preview guarantees a stable stream.
- Check the local archive. Confirm the recording is intact and continues growing. Compare it with the viewer-facing stream to help locate where a defect starts.
- Test backup failover if configured. Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet and confirm the viewer player rolls to the backup feed.
- Verify actual playback. Check that the stream is reachable from the channel or watch page and test it on a mobile device.

Fix a blurry, blocky, or unstable picture
- Compare the mode and bitrate. Verify resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate against the table above. A bitrate that is too low for the selected mode can reduce detail; raising it beyond what your connection can sustain can create instability instead.
- Inspect the encoder. Check its error messages and CPU load. If the encoder cannot keep up, a demanding mode may produce problems even when the internet connection is adequate.
- Review the source and local recording. If the defect is visible in the archive, inspect camera focus, framing, lighting, and the quality of the audio/video source routed into the encoder. Better equipment is worth considering only if the source itself is the limiting factor.
- Test the outbound connection. If the encoder view and local recording are healthy but the live feed is not, measure upload performance under broadcast conditions. Contact your ISP if connectivity tests point to a connection problem.
YouTube’s troubleshooting page recommends checking source quality, encoder diagnostics, and connectivity rather than assuming a single cause. A new camera will not fix dropped frames caused by an overloaded encoder or insufficient upload capacity.
Fix buffering, dropped frames, or a stream that disconnects
First measure sustained upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Include backup feeds and other traffic sharing the connection. If the available upload cannot support the configured mode reliably, lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. These adjustments follow YouTube’s bandwidth and encoder guidance; no one setting is guaranteed to cure every failure.

Choose latency based on the kind of stream
YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture by the camera or encoder and appearance to viewers. Lower latency can make interaction more immediate, but can also increase playback buffering. If chat interaction or live responses are not important, the reduced delay may not be worth that tradeoff. YouTube says the 2160p/4K option does not offer its low-latency setting; that mode is optimized for quality at normal latency. Review YouTube’s live stream settings before choosing a latency mode.
Account for copyright and channel access
Quality settings do not determine whether you are allowed to broadcast particular material. Make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other content in your stream; consult YouTube’s encoder guidance and applicable YouTube policies when planning a broadcast. The cited encoder and setup guidance does not establish that reused material is automatically permitted, so do not treat a technically successful test as clearance to stream it.
If you are setting up live streaming for the first time, YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. See Get started with live streaming for access requirements and supported methods.
