To stream in 4K on YouTube, send a 2160p video signal from an encoder using a supported codec, a matching bitrate, and a stable upload connection. YouTube recommends 30 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 2160p30 and 42 Mbps for H.264; at 2160p60, it recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 50 Mbps for H.264. These are live-ingest recommendations—not the separate bitrate guidance for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the detailed requirements.

Choose your 4K frame rate, codec, and bitrate

YouTube identifies 4K as 2160p. Choose 30 or 60 frames per second according to the movement in your program and what your encoder supports. More frames per second can make fast motion look smoother, but YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate is higher at 60 fps.

The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations for video sent to YouTube Live, accessed October 3, 2026. Minimum rates are listed for reference; YouTube labels the higher figures as recommended.

Live format Codec Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
2160p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
2160p at 30 fps H.264 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p at 60 fps H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are encoder-to-YouTube live rates. YouTube’s separate 4K video-upload page gives different recommendations for uploading files; do not use those figures as the live-ingest table.

H.264 has a higher recommended bitrate than AV1 or H.265 at the same listed 4K frame rate. The best choice depends on what your encoder and workflow support; YouTube’s figures do not establish one codec as universally superior.

What upload speed do you need to stream 4K on YouTube?

Plan for stable outbound bandwidth above the total bitrate you send. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and says to account for the primary stream, any backup stream, and that headroom. For a single feed, use at least the chosen stream bitrate plus 20% as a planning baseline; for example, a 50 Mbps video stream calls for about 60 Mbps of available upload capacity before accounting for other traffic. The stream also carries audio, so allow for its bitrate as part of the total.

This is a capacity target, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. Check upload—not download—capacity, and consider other devices or applications using the connection. A speed-test peak does not prove that bandwidth will be consistently available throughout a broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips explain bandwidth planning and connectivity risks.

Encoder settings that matter

YouTube’s documented live workflow supports RTMP or RTMPS, with RTMPS recommended because it encrypts the connection. Supported video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; the documented frame-rate limit is up to 60 fps. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.

  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: Two-second interval; no more than four seconds.
  • Connection: RTMPS when available.
  • Picture format: Square pixels and progressive scan. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR; its advanced guidance lists 10-bit HDR.

For HDR, YouTube’s encoder guidance names H.265/HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm that the encoder, source, and intended output all support the format you select. YouTube says resolution and frame rate are detected automatically by default. If you need to force them, its guidance describes using a custom stream key with manual resolution settings. See YouTube’s encoder settings and resolution guidance.

Step-by-step: start a 4K YouTube live stream

  1. Enable live streaming on your channel. Verify the channel and check that it has not had a live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this in advance. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Create or schedule a stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it. YouTube documents this process in Manage live stream settings.
  3. Configure the encoder. Select 2160p, your chosen frame rate, and a supported codec. Set the recommended bitrate for that codec and frame rate, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose RTMPS if the encoder offers it.
  4. Send a test broadcast. Use a private or unlisted test with movement and audio similar to the real program. Check the preview, picture, sound, dropped frames, and stream-health indicators. YouTube advises testing with representative movement and audio before the live event.
  5. Go live and monitor. Start the broadcast from the encoder and follow stream health during the event. If warnings appear, use the troubleshooting section below rather than assuming the audience’s connection or playback device is the cause.

Equipment: what is required and what is optional?

You need an encoder workflow to send a 4K signal to YouTube. It can be software running on a computer or standalone hardware. YouTube does not specify one universal encoder model or computer specification; choose a setup that supports your intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and production workflow.

  • Camera: Needed only if your program includes camera footage. A particular 4K webcam is not a universal requirement; the source must match the production you plan to send.
  • Capture card: Useful when bringing gameplay or another external video device into a computer-based production. It is not required for every 4K live stream.
  • Hardware encoder: An option alongside software encoding, not a universal requirement.
  • Network connection: Ethernet may help with local reliability, but it cannot create upload capacity beyond what the internet connection provides.

Compare encoder options by their supported resolution, frame rate, codec, stability, and compatibility with your camera or game-capture setup. YouTube’s encoder list is a compatibility reference, not evidence of comparative testing or an endorsement.

Troubleshooting common 4K streaming problems

  • YouTube does not show a 4K signal: Confirm the encoder is outputting 2160p, not just capturing a 4K source. Check the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate. If automatic detection does not fit your workflow, review YouTube’s custom stream key and manual resolution guidance.
  • Stream health warns about bitrate or dropped frames: Check that the selected bitrate matches the codec and frame rate, then verify stable upload capacity with headroom. Reduce competing network use and check whether the connection fluctuates.
  • Encoder cannot use the chosen codec or frame rate: Select a codec and frame rate supported by both the encoder and YouTube. If necessary, choose another supported codec and use its corresponding bitrate recommendation.
  • Connection fails or the stream disconnects: Check the stream URL and key, encoder connection settings, and network stability. Prefer RTMPS when available. Keep the stream key private; if it has been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s live settings.
  • HDR output is unavailable or incorrect: Confirm the entire production chain supports HDR and use H.265/HEVC for HDR according to YouTube’s guidance; AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance.
  • Picture or sound looks wrong in the test: Check the source, audio routing, progressive-scan and pixel settings, and the encoder’s preview before the event. Test with similar motion and audio rather than a static screen.

What happens to latency at 4K?

YouTube’s low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 4K/2160p. YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency and optimizes them for quality, so do not plan a 4K broadcast around that low-latency option.
