To play a video file from your computer on YouTube Live, add it to an encoder’s outgoing program, connect the encoder to a YouTube stream with the stream URL and key, check the preview, and start the encoder. YouTube receives the encoder’s feed—not the file directly—so confirm that the encoder sends the video’s audio and handles playback at the end the way you intend.

Before you start

  • Your YouTube channel must have live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  • Use streaming encoder software or hardware that can include a local video file in its output. The exact control for adding a file depends on the encoder; follow its current documentation rather than assuming the same menu names across apps.
  • Make sure your computer’s upload connection can sustain the selected stream settings. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips.
  • Have permission to livestream the file and any music or other third-party content in it. Owning a copy does not itself grant retransmission rights.

Set up the YouTube Live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new stream or open the event you plan to use.
  2. Choose the encoder workflow and locate the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets the encoder send a feed to the right destination. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to stream on your channel.
  3. Keep the Live Control Room open. You will use its preview and stream-health information to verify the incoming feed.

For YouTube’s complete connection workflow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Add the local file in your encoder

  1. Open the encoder and add the video file as a media or video source, using that encoder’s current instructions.
  2. Place the source in the scene or program that the encoder will send to YouTube. Check that the intended picture is visible and framed correctly.
  3. Check the audio path. Confirm that the file’s sound is included in the outgoing program and that it is not muted or routed to an output YouTube will not receive.
  4. Check what happens when playback reaches the end. Depending on the encoder, the file may stop, freeze on its last frame, or loop. Set the desired behavior in the encoder and verify it before the event.
  5. If you are combining the file with other sources, inspect the finished program output—not just the file preview—to make sure the right content is on air.

The file-source controls vary by encoder and are not part of YouTube’s setup instructions. Consult the software or hardware maker’s current documentation for its specific steps.

Connect the encoder and choose stream settings

Connect to YouTube

In the encoder’s YouTube integration, select the event if offered. Otherwise, paste the stream URL into its server or destination field and the stream key into its key field. Confirm that the encoder is set to send the program containing your file. Keep the key private.

Choose a protocol and video settings

YouTube generally recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video at up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and recommends constant bitrate encoding. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for resolution-specific bitrate guidance.

  • Choose a resolution and frame rate the source and computer can handle. A high-resolution file does not guarantee a stable high-resolution live feed.
  • Set the bitrate according to YouTube’s guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, while staying within the reliable upload capacity of your connection.
  • Keep the keyframe interval at YouTube’s recommended two seconds and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Use constant bitrate and a supported audio format for RTMP/RTMPS. Confirm that the encoder’s output settings—not just the file’s properties—match the intended stream.

When HLS may fit

HLS is an option for compatible encoders and some specialized workflows, including certain HDR or codec cases, but YouTube notes that segmented delivery has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. YouTube’s HLS setup specifies 1–4 second TS segments, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. Use HLS only if your encoder and use case support those requirements; for a basic local-file stream, RTMPS is the general recommendation. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Test, preview, and go live

  1. Start the encoder’s output when you are ready to send the program. Starting the encoder feed is not necessarily the same as making the event public; follow the event controls shown in YouTube Studio.
  2. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check the picture, framing, audio, and whether the file is playing as expected.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement comparable to the real stream; a short representative test can reveal bandwidth, sound, and encoding issues before the audience arrives.
  4. Verify that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages as intended, then monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast.
  5. To finish, stop the stream from the encoder and confirm in YouTube Studio that the event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check its current guidance before relying on an archive for a particular event.

Rights and YouTube policy considerations

A local file is not automatically cleared for public livestreaming. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” This responsibility applies to live content and any archive. The rights needed depend on the material and the licenses that apply; possession of the file alone is not proof of permission.

Before streaming, check rights for the video, soundtrack, and other included material, including any music embedded in the file. A stream that is permitted in one context may not be permitted for a public broadcast or archived replay. YouTube’s terms do not determine the rights status of a particular file.

Common problems and fixes

  • No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct event, and that the stream URL and key match the Live Control Room. Check that the encoder is actively outputting the program.
  • Video appears but there is no sound: Check the file’s audio track, the encoder’s source and program audio routing, mute controls, and the output audio format. Verify sound in the Live Control Room preview before going live.
  • The file stops or leaves a frozen image: Check the encoder’s end-of-playback behavior. Configure looping if needed, or arrange another source before playback ends.
  • The stream is unstable or reports health problems: Reduce the output bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate that your connection can sustain. Recheck upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
  • The image looks different from the source file: Check the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, scaling, and scene layout. YouTube receives the encoded program, so the file’s original specifications alone do not determine the broadcast output.
  • The event ends unexpectedly: Check the encoder connection and stream-health messages, then confirm event status in YouTube Studio. If you restart, verify that the correct event and key are being used.
