A homebrew project called PP (PS5 Proton) was reportedly demonstrated running Windows games on a modified PlayStation 5. That is not the same as Sony adding Proton to PS5 software: as of October 3, 2026, the reports said no public build or code repository was available, and compatibility and performance remained unknown.

Can you run Windows games on a PS5?

Not as a general, supported PS5 feature. Reports published on October 3, 2026 described PP (PS5 Proton), a homebrew effort demonstrated on a modified console. They did not establish that ordinary PS5 owners can install it, which games work, or how well they run. The reports also said a public build and repository were not available at that time. The project-status reports therefore support describing PP as a reported demonstration, not a released way to turn a PS5 into a Windows-game platform.

There is no reliable public compatibility list or measured performance data in those reports. They do not establish firmware requirements, installation instructions, a release date, working game titles, or performance figures.

What Proton means in this project

Valve’s Proton is a compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux through the Steam client. Valve’s official Proton project documentation describes it this way: “Proton is a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” Valve also documents Proton in the Steamworks documentation for Steam/Linux gaming and the Steam Deck.

The shared name does not show that Sony incorporated Valve’s Proton into PS5 system software. The cited material identifies PP as a homebrew project for modified PS5 systems; it does not establish official Sony support.

How PP differs from PS5 backward compatibility

Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility page says the console can play the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, while noting exceptions and possible title-specific issues. That is compatibility with PlayStation 4 games, not general support for Windows PC games through Proton.

These are separate cases: Sony documents PS4-game compatibility on PS5, while PP has been reported as an unofficial, non-public demonstration of Windows-game support on a modified console. The PS4 catalog figure does not indicate how many Windows games PP can run.

What is known—and what remains unverified

Question What the cited sources establish
Is it an official PS5 feature? No. The reports describe PP as homebrew for modified PS5 systems; they do not establish Sony support.
Can the public download it? The reports dated October 3, 2026 said no public build or code repository was available then.
Which Windows games work? No reliable public compatibility list was established.
How fast do games run? No measured performance figures were established.
What firmware or installation steps are needed? Not established by the cited reports.
When will it be released? No public release date was established.

Because the available status information comes from reports of a demonstration rather than a public PP release, claims beyond those points should be treated as unverified unless supported by direct project documentation.

If your goal is to play Windows games with Proton

For a currently documented route, Valve supports Proton for Windows games on Linux through Steam, including in the Steam Deck context. A Steam Deck is an alternative Linux handheld for that purpose; it is not part of PP and is not required for the PS5 project. The available sources do not support recommending a PS5 accessory, installation tool, or other hardware for PP.
