To add captions automatically, open the video in the tool where you edit or publish it, choose its spoken language, generate captions from speech, then correct the transcript and timing before sharing. YouTube Studio is convenient for a video already uploaded to YouTube; YouTube Create suits short mobile projects; Premiere Pro and CapCut offer caption workflows inside video-editing projects.

AI captions are a draft, not a verified transcript. Review names, numbers, technical terms, punctuation, timing, and speaker changes—especially when the audio is noisy or people speak over one another.

Choose a caption workflow

Where you are working Good starting point Important consideration
A video already uploaded to YouTube YouTube Studio Captions may take time to process, and supported languages are limited to YouTube’s published list.
A short mobile video project YouTube Create Caption generation is limited to clips of 60 seconds; check device requirements below.
A desktop editing timeline Adobe Premiere Pro Captions can be created as timecoded tracks and styled in the project.
A web, desktop, or mobile editing project CapCut Some advanced caption features vary by platform, region, and app version.

Pick based on where the video lives and what you need to deliver: a platform caption track, editable timeline captions, translated tracks, an SRT file, or text burned into the picture. The exact export options can differ by tool and version, so confirm that your chosen workflow produces the format you need.

Add captions in YouTube Studio

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Subtitles.
  2. Select the uploaded video. If automatic captions are available, open them after YouTube has finished processing.
  3. Review the generated text and timing. Edit mistakes, or remove captions that are not usable.
  4. Save or publish the corrected captions using the controls shown for that video.

Caption processing is not necessarily immediate; YouTube says the time depends on audio complexity. Its automatic-caption support is language-dependent. Poor sound, an unsupported language, a long video, extended silence, overlapping speakers, or multiple languages spoken at once can prevent captions from appearing or make them less reliable. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Always review automatic captions and edit any parts that haven’t been properly transcribed.” YouTube Help: automatic captions.

Automatic captions on YouTube live streams

YouTube’s current help information describes automatic live captions as English-only and subject to availability conditions, including normal-latency streaming, the absence of professional captions, rollout availability, and channel-level constraints. Live captions do not remain after the broadcast: YouTube generates new automatic captions for the video-on-demand version. Because availability and eligibility can change, check YouTube’s current caption guidance before relying on live captions for an event.

Generate captions in YouTube Create

  1. Open a project and tap Captions.
  2. Choose All videos to caption detected speech in the original recording, or Voiceover for voiceover recorded in the app.
  3. Select the voiceover language when prompted, then tap Generate.
  4. Select a generated caption layer to correct its text. Open Style to adjust size, font, color, background, outline, or shadow.
  5. Play the video and check that the captions match the spoken words and appear at the right time.

YouTube Create cannot generate captions for clips longer than 60 seconds. YouTube lists Android phones with at least 4 GB of RAM and iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later as supported device requirements. See YouTube Create’s caption instructions for current details.

Create caption tracks in Adobe Premiere Pro

  1. When importing: select the Automatic Transcription option during import. If the media is already in the project, open the Captions workspace and choose Create captions from transcript.
  2. Choose the transcription language. Download its language pack if Premiere prompts you to do so.
  3. Set the transcription options, including speaker labeling and which audio source to analyze. Choose caption preset and format settings, as well as caption length, duration, and gaps.
  4. Create the captions from the transcript. Premiere places timecoded captions in tracks that you can edit in the timeline.
  5. Correct the transcript and timing, then style the captions. If you need translations, create additional supported-language tracks and review each one.
  6. Check the captions again before export.

Adobe recommends checking generated captions for accuracy before export. Its tutorial instructor, James Bonnano, says to check captions because languages and styles need attention. Consult Adobe’s Speech to Text guidance for current controls and supported languages.

Use CapCut Auto captions

  1. Open or import the video in a CapCut project.
  2. Choose Auto captions, select the source language, and generate captions.
  3. Edit the recognized text, timing, and visual style in the project.
  4. Review the finished video. On desktop, CapCut documents exporting a rendered video.

CapCut documents the core recognition workflow on web, desktop, and mobile. Features such as speaker differentiation, punctuation refinement, and batch SRT export may depend on platform, region, and app version. Its bilingual-caption workflow lets you choose a recognition language and a target translation language; check both the transcript and translation before publishing. See CapCut’s Auto captions guide and bilingual-caption instructions for the current workflow.

Make AI captions accurate and readable

  • Check words that recognition often confuses. Verify names, places, acronyms, product names, numbers, and specialist vocabulary against the audio.
  • Listen for omissions and speaker changes. Overlapping speech, silence, background noise, and simultaneous languages can make recognition unreliable.
  • Check timing while watching. Correct captions that appear too early or late, remain on screen too long, or split a phrase awkwardly.
  • Keep presentation legible. Use a size, contrast, and background that remain readable over the footage; preview on a phone as well as a larger screen when possible.
  • Review translations independently. Translation is a separate step from transcription. A correct source transcript does not guarantee a clear or accurate translation.

Clearer audio can help when recording future footage, and YouTube lists poor sound quality as a reason automatic captions may fail. A microphone is not needed to caption a video you have already recorded; try the caption tool in your current platform or editor first.

Fix common automatic-caption problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
No captions appear in YouTube Studio Processing is incomplete, the language is unsupported, or the audio conditions are difficult. Allow processing time; check YouTube’s supported-language guidance and audio; review the video for long silence, overlapping speech, or multiple languages at once.
Words are missing or incorrect Noise, unclear speech, accents, dialects, mispronunciations, or overlapping speakers. Correct the transcript manually and check the surrounding timing. YouTube specifically warns that these audio and speech differences can cause mistakes.
YouTube Create will not generate captions The clip exceeds its 60-second caption limit, or the device does not meet the listed requirements. Use a shorter clip or caption it in another workflow; check the supported device requirements.
Captions are not available during a YouTube live stream Live-caption eligibility or rollout conditions are not met. Check YouTube’s current live-caption conditions. Do not assume live captions will remain on the replay.
A CapCut control or export option is missing Feature availability can differ by platform, region, and app version. Check the relevant CapCut guide and the controls in your installed version; use another documented workflow if you need a specific deliverable.
Translated captions sound unnatural Translation is not the same as transcription and may miss context or idiom. Review the target-language track for meaning and clarity, ideally with a fluent speaker when accuracy matters.

The official workflows explain how to generate and edit captions, but they do not establish a reliable, independent, like-for-like accuracy ranking among YouTube Create, Premiere Pro, CapCut, and YouTube Studio. Choose by workflow and verify the output rather than assuming one is definitively more accurate.
