Point it to the image you want Slack to use, and include the page’s other basic Open Graph tags. Slack says its standard link-unfurling process crawls a URL and looks for Open Graph and X Card metadata.
Add Open Graph metadata to the page
Put the tags in the <head> of the exact page you plan to share. Replace the example page and image URLs with the real, fully qualified URLs for your site:

<meta property="og:description" content="A short description of this page.">The Open Graph Protocol identifies og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as its basic required properties. og:description is optional, and the protocol recommends supplying og:image:alt when a page specifies og:image. See the Open Graph Protocol documentation.
The og:image value is the image URL that represents the page. Use an address that points directly to the intended image, rather than to a page that displays it. The example shows metadata syntax and placement; it is not a guarantee of a particular Slack card appearance or image dimensions.

Share a fully qualified URL
Include the protocol in the Slack message, such as https://example.com/page, rather than sharing a bare domain or path. Slack’s documented guidance says a link needs to include http:// or https:// to be eligible for unfurling. Slack describes its ordinary behavior this way: “When a link is spotted, Slack crawls it and provides a preview.” See Slack’s link-unfurling documentation.
Troubleshoot a Slack link preview with no image
Check the page Slack is meant to fetch, not just a different page on the same site. The metadata should be present in the actual HTML response for the shared URL.

- Inspect the page head. Fetch or view the HTML for the exact URL and confirm the intended
og:imagetag appears in its<head>. - Check the metadata values. Make sure the image tag points to the intended image and the page also has
og:title,og:type, andog:url. Confirm the page URL inog:urlis the page you mean to represent. - Check the Slack message. Share the complete URL with its
http://orhttps://scheme. - Check for an app-specific handler. If a Slack app is configured for the domain, its custom unfurl flow may apply. If no app handles it, Slack documents fallback to classic crawling behavior.
- Inspect access to the image. As a practical debugging step, check your server access records and whether the image resource can be fetched. The reviewed official documentation does not establish a specific Slack timeout, cache-refresh interval, image-size limit, or supported image-format list.
Slack’s classic website-preview cache behavior and an official preview debugger are not established by the cited documentation. If the image remains absent after the checks above, avoid assuming a particular cache period or file restriction; verify what the server returned for both the page and image, then consult Slack’s current documentation.
Classic previews and Slack app unfurls are different
For the usual case—a website page that should show its own title, description, and image—use page metadata and classic link unfurling. A custom Slack app unfurl is a separate developer-controlled integration for cases where an app should provide custom content or interaction for links from a domain.

Slack’s chat.unfurl API reference documents the links:write scope and a URL-keyed unfurls map. Its preview field is ignored when supplied for an unfurl to an already posted message, so that API is not a way to force an ordinary classic image preview.
