If OBS’s preview is black, start with the scene and its local video source—not YouTube. For a prerecorded file, OBS’s Media Source is the direct route: confirm the right scene is active, the file is selected and playing, the source is visible and on top, and its picture sits inside the canvas. If the OBS preview looks correct but YouTube Live is black, compare a local recording with YouTube’s live output and investigate the encoder and connection instead.
Find where the picture disappears
Check the image at three points: the OBS preview, a short local recording made in OBS, and YouTube’s live preview. This separates a scene or playback problem from an output or delivery problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the stream in the encoder and inspecting a local archive; its guidance also points to the outbound connection if the encoder output is healthy. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide gives its checks for encoder errors, CPU load, and connection strength.
- Black in OBS preview: Check the active scene, Media Source, visibility, source order, playback, and transform.
- Preview looks right, local recording is black: Investigate OBS output and encoding before blaming YouTube delivery.
- Preview and local recording look right, YouTube is black: Check the encoder’s reported status, YouTube Live Control Room, CPU load, and outbound connection.
This comparison identifies the stage to investigate; it does not establish one universal cause. YouTube’s instruction is to “Check the look and sound of your stream directly in the encoder.”
Use the right OBS source for a prerecorded file
For a video or audio file stored on your computer, add a Media Source to the scene. OBS distinguishes it from Display, Window, Game, and Video Capture sources, which capture a screen, application or game, or external device. A capture source is not inherently required to play a local file. OBS’s Sources Guide describes Media Sources as adding audio/video files to a scene.

| Source path | Appropriate content | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | A prerecorded local video or audio file | File selection and playback; visibility and stacking; position and crop. |
| Display, Window, Game, or Video Capture | A screen, application or game window, or external video device | Correct capture source and target. On some multi-GPU laptops, GPU assignment can matter for particular capture methods. |
Fix a black OBS preview
- Activate the intended scene. In OBS, select the scene you intend to send to YouTube and check its preview. A different active scene may not contain the file source.
- Add or inspect the Media Source. In the Sources panel, select the existing Media Source or add one, then confirm it points to the intended file. Check that the source is active and the video is advancing rather than paused or at an unexpected point.
- Turn on visibility. In the Sources panel, make sure the Media Source’s eye control is enabled. OBS uses this control to show or hide a source.
- Check which source is on top. OBS draws higher sources in the Sources list above lower ones. A source above the Media Source can cover its picture. Reorder sources or temporarily hide the covering source to test.
- Check position, size, and crop. Select the Media Source and inspect its bounding box in the preview. Make sure it is within the canvas and large enough to see. Review its transform and crop for settings that move the picture off-canvas or remove the useful area.
- Verify playback, then make a short recording. Confirm the selected file plays in OBS and record briefly. If audio is present but video is absent, the issue is narrowed to the visual source or render path, but that observation alone does not identify a specific cause.
If the file still fails to display, check the OBS log and the file itself before assuming a codec incompatibility. The documented source-order and transform controls are covered in the OBS Sources Guide.
If OBS looks right but YouTube is black
When the preview and local recording show the intended video, move downstream rather than rebuilding the scene without evidence. Work through YouTube’s encoder and delivery checks:

- Check the encoder output. Inspect the picture and sound in OBS while the stream is running. If the local archive is wrong, return to OBS’s source and output path.
- Review YouTube’s live dashboard. Look for reported encoder errors or warnings that coincide with the missing picture.
- Check system load. Review OBS’s status and CPU load for signs the computer is struggling to encode or send the stream.
- Test the outbound connection. If the encoder output is healthy but the live output is not, check the strength and stability of the Internet connection leaving the computer.
- Use a new stream key only for the relevant error. YouTube suggests trying a new stream key when a third-party encoder reports an error starting. That is a targeted step, not a general fix for every black screen.
Keep the comparison between OBS, the recording, and YouTube’s output: it helps avoid changing a working local source to solve a problem occurring later in the stream path. Follow the current YouTube troubleshooting steps for dashboard and encoder checks.
When GPU assignment may matter
GPU assignment is a targeted possibility for some capture setups, not a general remedy for a Media Source playing a local file. OBS’s laptop guidance says Display Capture may call for OBS to use the integrated GPU, while Game or Window Capture may call for the discrete GPU on a multi-GPU laptop. It also discusses browser rendering and hardware acceleration. That guidance is specific to those capture and browser-source cases, and the page was last modified in 2019, so its interface directions may not match current systems. See the OBS laptop troubleshooting guide.

Common misdiagnoses and practical checks
- Buying a capture card: A capture card is for capturing an external video device; a local file belongs in a Media Source. The documented workflows do not identify a purchase as the standard fix for this symptom.
- Assuming every black screen is a YouTube problem: If OBS itself is black, first resolve the scene or source path. YouTube delivery checks are useful only after the local output is understood.
- Changing GPU settings for file playback: The cited OBS laptop advice concerns specific capture methods and browser rendering; it does not establish GPU reassignment as a fix for local Media Source playback.
- Replacing the stream key without an encoder-start error: YouTube’s stream-key suggestion is tied to that reported error, not to black video in general.
Or let it run in the cloud
