For most iPhone users, Apple’s built-in Screen Recording control is the best place to start: it captures the screen without an extra download and saves the video to Photos. Consider a third-party app when you specifically want advertised extras such as quality controls, a face-camera reaction, editing, or a different export workflow. The options below are compared by their published features, not by hands-on tests of recording quality or reliability.

Use Apple’s built-in recorder for straightforward captures
Apple documents screen recording as an iPhone feature; you do not need to install an app for basic capture. Open Control Center, tap Screen Recording, wait for the three-second countdown, then use the screen as usual. To include your voice, press and hold the Screen Recording control, turn on Microphone, and start recording. Find the saved video in Photos under the Screen Recordings media type. Apple cautions: “Some apps might not allow you to record their content, and you can’t record your screen and use screen mirroring at the same time.” If an app blocks recording, another recorder may not bypass that restriction.

When a third-party app may be worth installing
Screen Recorder: advertised capture controls and camera features
The US App Store listing for Screen Recorder advertises controls for resolution, bitrate, and frame rate, as well as face-camera reactions, dual-camera recording, audio recording, and an integrated editor. These features may suit a creator who wants to adjust capture settings or add a camera reaction. The listing’s availability and device limitations should be checked before installing.
When reviewed on October 3, 2026, the US listing displayed 4.5 stars from 34K ratings. It also displayed weekly and annual premium subscriptions, including a weekly price of $4.99 and an annual price of $49.99 with a three-day free trial. These are storefront snapshots, not durable prices or a measure of recording performance; confirm the current terms in the listing.

Its listing says sharing is limited to 10-minute videos and that Record It! Pro enables longer sharing, so check the current app terms if clip length matters.

Choose by the job you need to do
- For a quick tutorial or app demonstration: Start with Apple’s recorder. Enable the microphone only if you want narration.
- For quality controls: Compare the resolution, bitrate, frame-rate, encoder, and audio options advertised by a third-party app with the controls you actually need.
- For a face-camera reaction or dual-camera capture: Check whether the app listing advertises the feature and whether it supports your iPhone and iOS version.
- For editing in the recording app: Compare the specific editing tools you need, such as trimming or other advertised adjustments, rather than assuming all editors offer the same workflow.
- For sharing beyond Photos: Check the available export destinations and any video-length or subscription restrictions before recording a long session.
Apple’s developer sample describes additional system content-capture capabilities, including recording to a file, a rolling buffer of up to 15 seconds, and a camera preview during in-app captures. Check these details before downloading
- Compatibility: Read the current listing for supported iOS versions and devices; availability and requirements can change.
- Capture limits: Apple says some apps may prevent recording. Screen recording also cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring.
- Audio: Confirm whether you need microphone narration, app audio, or both, and what the app says it supports.
- Export and duration: Verify where recordings can be saved or shared and whether a length limit applies.
- Cost: Review current in-app purchases, subscription renewal terms, and any trial conditions in the App Store listing before starting a trial.
