How to choose screen recording software for a product review
A useful review may need to show an app or website, your face, spoken narration, and the product’s own audio. Before choosing, check how each tool handles those sources and whether you can edit them into a clear final video.
- Capture: Can it record a display or a specific window, and can it include a camera or another video source?
- Audio: Can it record your microphone and, when needed, system audio? Can you adjust or edit those sources independently?
- Editing: Does it include the timeline or browser editor you need, or will you finish the video in a separate app?
- Setup: Are you comfortable configuring scenes, sources, and audio, or do you want a more bundled workflow?
- Sharing: Do you prefer to save a file locally, or do you need browser-based sharing and collaboration?
- Platform and price: Confirm that the current app or browser workflow supports your system and check the official plan page for your region before buying.

OBS Studio: configurable capture without a bundled editing workflow
OBS builds a recording from scenes and sources. For a product review, one scene might show an app window with your webcam in a corner; another might show a close-up of a particular screen area or a different source. You can also use hotkeys and transitions to make repeatable demonstrations easier to operate.
OBS Project’s official page lists version 32.2.2 and gives August 14 as the release date, but the year is not visible in the cited excerpt. Confirm the version available for your operating system on the official page.

Set up and test a review recording
- Install the version listed for your system on the OBS Studio page. The listed operating systems are Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux.
- Open OBS and create a scene for the shot you want. Add the required sources, such as a window capture, display capture, webcam, text, or browser window. The OBS Quick Start Guide documents display and window sources on Windows and Linux and a macOS screen-capture source on macOS.
- Check the audio mixer while speaking and while the product plays any audio you need to demonstrate. OBS documents noise gate, noise suppression, and gain filters; use a short recording to check that narration is clear and system audio is present at a suitable level.
- Make a short test recording before the full review. The OBS Quick Start Guide recommends checking settings with a test recording. Review the result for missing sources, unreadable interface text, clipped narration, or unwanted desktop notifications.
- Record the review, then use your chosen editing workflow to trim mistakes, arrange sections, and prepare the finished video. OBS’s documented strengths here are capture configuration and controls; do not assume its cited feature list supplies every editing feature a particular review needs.
Camtasia: capture and edit recorded sources together or separately
TechSmith’s support guidance, updated November 5, 2025, says Camtasia captures the screen, camera, microphone, and optional system audio. After capture, the streams can be treated as a combined media package for faster enhancements and basic edits or placed on separate tracks for greater control. Separate tracks are useful when, for example, you need to adjust narration independently from the product’s audio.
TechSmith’s plan descriptions are not a performance comparison. Essentials is described as including screen recording and non-linear editing; Create adds text-based editing and other creation aids; Pro adds higher-tier AI features and assets. The cited guidance does not establish a complete current price table, so check the official plan information for your location and confirm that the features you need are in the plan you select.

Camtasia Online: browser-based recording, editing, and sharing
TechSmith describes Camtasia Online as a browser option for recording screen, camera, and microphone, editing in the browser, and sharing by link. Its landing page also describes collaborative editing and calls the offering free and no-watermark. Because availability and terms can change, verify them on the Camtasia Online page before planning a production around those details.
Build a clean product-review recording
Plan the shots and audio
- Choose whether each segment needs a full display, a particular window, a camera view, or a combination. Close unrelated windows and silence notifications before recording.
- Decide whether the review needs system audio, such as an app sound or product demonstration, as well as narration. Check both in the test clip.
- Use a headset or built-in microphone if it gives you clear narration. A USB microphone is an optional upgrade, not a requirement of the documented workflows.
Record a test before the full take
Watch and listen to a short sample at the size you expect to publish. Confirm that small interface text is readable, the cursor or relevant interaction is visible, the camera is framed as intended, and neither narration nor system audio is missing or overpowering the other.

Protect the review’s credibility
Only show product footage and audio you have permission to use. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content requirements are separate from the recording software: capturing a clip does not grant rights to publish it, and a screen recording alone does not make reused material original. For a review, make your own commentary and demonstrate the product in a way that adds explanation rather than relying on someone else’s footage.
Which option should you pick?
- Choose OBS Studio if configurable scenes, capture sources, and audio controls matter most and you are willing to set up and test the workflow.
- Choose Camtasia if you want screen, camera, microphone, and optional system audio capture connected to an editor with combined or separate-track workflows.
- Consider Camtasia Online if browser recording, editing, link sharing, or collaboration suits your process—and its current availability and terms meet your needs.
