On Twitch, use Stream Manager markers and Video Producer’s Highlighter; on YouTube, add stream markers in Studio and create a highlight in YouTube Editor. If you missed the live moment, scrub the saved video and note timestamps as you go.
Before you start: make sure the stream was saved
A highlight can only be made from footage you can access. On Twitch, enable Past Broadcast storage before going live if you need a VOD afterward; Twitch says this setting is required to save live streams as VODs. See Twitch’s On-Demand Content help for the current setting and storage details.
YouTube’s highlight workflow assumes the stream video is available in YouTube Studio. After a broadcast, confirm that the recording appears there before you plan to edit it. For either platform, download or otherwise preserve footage you need to keep before it becomes unavailable.
Find and make highlights on Twitch
Mark moments while you are live
- In Twitch Stream Manager, use the Stream Marker quick action when something worth revisiting happens.
- Alternatively, enter
/markerin chat. You can add a description after a space to help identify the moment later. - Keep the description short and specific—for example, “final round comeback” or “audience question”—so it is useful when scanning the VOD.
A marker is a timestamp to review, not a finished clip. Twitch documents both the dashboard action and chat command in its Creating Highlights and Stream Markers guide.

Turn markers into a highlight
- After the stream, open Twitch’s Video Producer and select the past broadcast.
- Open Highlighter. Its timeline shows marker positions and can show existing clips, giving you starting points for review.
- Inspect some footage before and after each promising marker. The important action may start earlier, and a little aftermath or reaction may make the moment understandable.
- Set the segment’s start and end boundaries, then adjust them until the clip contains the necessary context without unrelated footage.
- For a longer reel, add multiple segments, remove sections that do not fit, and arrange the selection around the story you want viewers to follow.
- Review the assembled selection, give it an accurate title, and publish when it is ready.
Twitch’s Highlighter supports selecting multiple segments in one highlight. Its Highlighter instructions explain the timeline and segment controls.
Account for Twitch VOD storage
Twitch’s On-Demand Content help page states a 100-hour VOD storage limit and says highlights may be unavailable to create when an account is at or near that limit. The cited page does not state a publication year, so treat the number as a limit to verify in Twitch’s current interface rather than a guarantee that applies unchanged to every account. Download or remove VODs as appropriate and check the current limit if the highlight option is unavailable.

Find and make highlights on YouTube
Add a marker during the live stream
While live, insert a stream marker in YouTube Studio when something notable happens. Markers help you return to the right point later; they do not automatically choose or edit the finished highlight.
Create the highlight in YouTube Studio
- Open the stream video in YouTube Studio and choose the option to create a highlight.
- On the editor timeline, use the marker as a cue, then drag the trim handles or edit the timestamps to select the passage.
- Enter a title and choose the privacy setting deliberately.
- Check the selected range and privacy choice, then create the highlight. YouTube says the resulting video is automatically published.
YouTube describes making highlights during a stream or afterward in its Create a highlight help page. If you are streaming alone, use markers as reminders and edit after the broadcast; a team member can also create a highlight while the stream is underway.

If you did not mark the moment live
- Open the saved VOD and look first for navigation cues already available, such as existing clips or markers.
- Scrub through likely sections and note timestamps for moments worth checking.
- Review around each timestamp rather than cutting at the exact cue. Include enough lead-in and follow-through to make the action clear.
- Choose the final format: a single short clip for one moment, or several segments for a reel that tells a broader story.
On Twitch, existing clips and markers can appear on the Highlighter timeline. YouTube’s editor provides its own timeline and trimming controls. These platform tools help locate and shape footage; they do not establish whether a moment is entertaining, so make the editorial choice yourself.

Markers belong to each platform’s own workflow. Twitch documents downloading or exporting VODs to YouTube, but that does not establish that Twitch markers transfer into YouTube Editor.

Make review faster and clips clearer
- Use short marker descriptions that identify why a moment matters, not just what was happening generally.
- Review a little before and after each marker, then trim to retain the context viewers need.
- For a reel, order segments so the sequence is understandable rather than simply following every marker in order.
- Before publishing, check the selected start and end, title, and privacy setting. A highlight is only useful if it contains the intended moment and is shared the way you mean to share it.
- If you stream regularly, a programmable shortcut controller can put a marker action on a physical button. One community report describes using a Stream Deck this way, but it is anecdotal rather than an official compatibility promise; the dashboard action and chat command work as alternatives.
Common problems and fixes
The Twitch broadcast is missing from Video Producer
Check whether Past Broadcast storage was enabled before the stream. Twitch requires it to save live streams as VODs; without a saved recording, there is no footage to review as a VOD.
The marker does not appear where expected
Confirm that the marker was added on the platform where you are editing and that you opened the correct broadcast. Treat the marker as a navigation cue, then scrub the timeline if the exact moment needs adjustment.

Twitch will not let you create another highlight
Check the current VOD storage status and limit in Twitch. Its help page says highlight creation may be unavailable at or near the stated 100-hour storage limit; download or remove content as appropriate, then verify availability in the interface.
The YouTube highlight is published with the wrong privacy
YouTube says the resulting video is automatically published. Before confirming creation, review the privacy selection as well as the title and trim range.
The clip starts too late or ends too soon
Return to the timeline and widen the segment to include the setup or reaction that gives the moment context. Markers are timestamps, not edit boundaries.
