FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation shows the pattern.
First identify which connection dropped
FFmpeg has an input side and an output side. If FFmpeg is reading a remote HTTP source and that connection fails, HTTP protocol reconnect options may apply. If FFmpeg is sending its output to YouTube’s RTMP ingest server and that connection fails, the relevant documented approach here is FIFO output recovery.
- HTTP input failure: investigate the HTTP protocol options documented by FFmpeg, including
reconnectand related flags. - RTMP output failure: adapt the FIFO muxer recovery pattern below.
The HTTP options are not a general switch for reconnecting an RTMP output. FFmpeg describes them in the context of HTTP connections in its protocol documentation.
Use FIFO recovery for an RTMP output
FFmpeg’s documentation gives this generic pattern for attempting recovery from a temporary output failure:

Replace the example RTMP URL with the ingest destination configured for your YouTube live event. Preserve the input, stream mapping, codecs, and other settings your workflow requires. This is FFmpeg’s generic RTMP example, not a verified YouTube-specific command; consult the FIFO muxer documentation before adapting it.
What the recovery options do
-f fifo -fifo_format flvputs a FIFO muxer in front of the FLV output format used in the example.-attempt_recovery 1enables attempts to recover after an output failure.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the documented example’s wait between recovery attempts to one second. The documentation describes attempts continuing indefinitely.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1allows packets to be dropped if the FIFO overflows while the output is unavailable. This is a trade-off: FFmpeg can keep processing, but dropped packets mean a discontinuity rather than preserved, gap-free media.
Check your build before using the command
Exact syntax and option availability depend on the FFmpeg build. Check the version/build installed on the machine, the operating system, the input type, and the complete command already in use. Confirm that the build supports the relevant FIFO muxer options before relying on them. Without those details, this pattern should be treated as a starting point, not a tailored copy-and-paste fix.

When HTTP reconnect options apply
FFmpeg documents these options for HTTP protocol connections, so use them for an HTTP input only when that is the failing connection and the HTTP protocol is in use:
reconnect: reconnect after a disconnect before EOF.reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error and reconnect; documented as useful for live or endless streams.reconnect_on_network_error: reconnect on TCP or TLS errors during connection setup.reconnect_on_http_error: retry selected HTTP response codes.reconnect_streamed: allow reconnects on errors for streamed, non-seekable inputs.
These are not substitutes for output recovery when FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube over RTMP. The HTTP implementation source also lists reconnect-delay defaults, but it is the rolling master branch and those HTTP defaults should not be applied to FIFO or RTMP behavior. Check the source for the installed release if you need HTTP-specific defaults: FFmpeg HTTP implementation.

Understand what -re does
-re reads input at its native frame rate, equivalent to a read rate of 1. It paces file input when simulating a live stream; it does not reconnect a network output. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation warns against using it with an actual capture device or live input because it may cause packet loss. Add or keep it only when appropriate for your input, not as an outage-recovery setting.
What recovery can and cannot guarantee
The FIFO example describes FFmpeg continuing to process during a temporary output failure and attempting to recover. It does not establish that YouTube will preserve the same live event or that viewers will see uninterrupted audio or video. Recovery is an attempt to restore output, not a guarantee of seamless playback, a particular outage tolerance, or successful resumption of a specific YouTube session.

Troubleshoot a failed recovery
- FFmpeg does not recognize an option: check the installed version/build and confirm the FIFO muxer options are available in that build.
- The stream still stops at an HTTP input disconnect: verify that the source is actually HTTP, then configure the relevant HTTP reconnect behavior; FIFO output recovery addresses a different connection.
- The YouTube output drops: confirm the command is using FIFO recovery around the RTMP output and that the destination is the ingest URL configured for the event. The documented example does not guarantee YouTube will resume the same event.
- Packets are missing after a network interruption: the example enables packet dropping on FIFO overflow. That can avoid an indefinitely growing queue at the cost of lost packets and a discontinuity.
- A live capture input behaves poorly with
-re: remove it if it is being used on an actual capture device or live input; it is not the reconnect mechanism.
For command-specific diagnosis, gather the FFmpeg version/build, operating system, input type, full command with secrets such as the stream key removed, and the relevant error output. Those details determine whether the failure is on input or output and which options are supported.
