OBS Studio is the best all-around starting point for webcam live streaming if you want to combine a camera, graphics, audio, and other sources in one production. Choose NVIDIA Broadcast for supported AI camera or microphone effects, Logitech Capture for a Logitech-focused camera workflow on Windows, or Camo Studio if its phone-camera and live-production features fit your setup.
These tools do different jobs, and the recommendation is based on their published documentation—not hands-on testing or measured performance comparisons. Check each vendor’s current system requirements before installing.

Pick OBS Studio for production control
OBS is the strongest general choice when you need more than a clean camera feed. You can arrange a production as scenes, combine multiple source types, mix audio, and send the result to a streaming platform or use it as a virtual camera in another app. The trade-off is setup: more controls mean more decisions about sources, audio, scenes, and output settings.
Pick NVIDIA Broadcast for supported AI effects
Broadcast is a processing tool, not a replacement for a full scene-production application. It supplies virtual camera or microphone devices, which you then choose in OBS or another compatible app. It makes sense when its effects are the main thing you need and your computer meets NVIDIA’s current hardware requirements.

Pick Logitech Capture for a Logitech-centered workflow
Logitech Capture is most relevant if you use a Logitech camera and want the vendor’s camera workflow or a feed you can bring into software such as OBS or XSplit. Logitech identifies Capture as Windows-only. If your priority is arranging a full show with multiple sources, OBS is the broader tool.
Consider Camo Studio for phone-camera and live-production features
Reincubate describes Camo Studio as a live-production option, including phone-camera use. Its company page describes version 2.9 as adding native multistreaming and direct streaming to Facebook, Instagram, and Kick on Windows. Treat that as a vendor description and confirm current platform and feature availability before choosing it.
How to add a webcam in OBS
OBS’s documented method is to add a Video Capture Source to a scene. A webcam can then be placed and sized within the scene like other visual sources. The exact device choices depend on the camera and operating system.

- Open or create a scene. In OBS, select the scene that should contain the camera, or create a separate scene for your webcam layout.
- Add the camera source. In the Sources area, choose + and add a Video Capture Source. Select the webcam from the available device list.
- Check the picture and framing. Confirm that the intended camera appears, then position and resize it in the preview. If you use multiple scenes, add or configure the camera source in the scenes where it should appear.
- Check audio separately. Confirm that your intended microphone is available and that OBS is receiving its signal. A visible webcam picture does not establish that the correct microphone is being used.
- Preview the complete scene. Check camera framing, overlays, and audio before sending the scene to a live stream or virtual camera.
Windows camera compatibility
OBS’s source documentation says a camera driver needs to provide DirectShow output on Windows. OBS says major webcams and capture cards generally support it, but a camera that does not appear in the source list may have a driver or compatibility issue. Logitech’s C922 instructions for OBS are one documented camera-specific example; the C922 is not required.

OBS Virtual Camera sends an OBS scene to an application that can use a webcam. That lets you use a composed scene—not just the camera’s raw feed—in a compatible meeting, chat, or streaming app. OBS Project’s official Virtual Camera Guide, dated August 31, 2022, describes the feature as sharing an OBS scene with applications that can use a webcam.
- Build the scene in OBS. Add and arrange the camera and any other sources you want the receiving app to see.
- Start OBS Virtual Camera. Use OBS’s Virtual Camera control, then open the receiving application.
- Choose the OBS camera in the receiving app. In that app’s camera or video settings, select OBS Virtual Camera instead of the physical webcam. The setting’s location and available devices vary by app.
- Verify the output before a call or stream. Confirm that the receiving app displays the right scene and that its audio input is set as intended.
Studio Mode: be careful with Preview output
OBS offers virtual-camera output choices that include Program, Preview, a chosen scene, or a source. If you use Studio Mode, selecting Preview can show changes before you intend to put them on air. Use Program when the receiving app should show the live program output, and check the chosen output before presenting.

macOS compatibility
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance says OBS Studio 30.0 and newer on macOS 13 or newer include a virtual camera component compatible with all Mac applications. Older virtual-camera paths may have limitations. If the camera is missing from a particular app, consult OBS’s current troubleshooting guidance for your macOS version and that receiving app rather than assuming every older setup behaves the same way.
Performance and setup choices that affect the result
Meeting a software’s basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record smoothly. OBS notes that processor needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A scene with several sources or effects can demand more than a basic camera scene.
- Start with a manageable scene. Add only the sources and effects you need, then expand the production if performance remains stable.
- Choose settings your machine can sustain. Higher resolution and frame rate can increase processing demands. OBS does not give one universal CPU requirement that applies to every combination.
- Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. OBS provides it to help find initial settings for your system; treat its result as a starting configuration, not a guarantee for every scene or network.
- Check hardware requirements before installing effects software. NVIDIA Broadcast’s GPU requirements can rule it out even if your streaming app itself runs.
Common webcam software problems and fixes
The webcam does not appear in OBS
- Confirm that the camera is connected and available to the operating system.
- On Windows, check whether its driver provides DirectShow output, which OBS requires for this source workflow.
- Close another app that may already be using the camera, then reopen or reselect the device in OBS.
The virtual camera is missing from a receiving app
- Start the OBS Virtual Camera before checking the receiving app’s camera list.
- On macOS, check your OBS and macOS versions against OBS’s current troubleshooting instructions; the documented compatibility for all Mac applications applies to OBS Studio 30.0 and newer on macOS 13 or newer.
- Confirm that the receiving app supports webcam input and that its camera selection is set to OBS Virtual Camera.
The receiving app shows the wrong scene or an unintended change
Check whether the virtual camera is outputting Program, Preview, a specific scene, or a source. In Studio Mode, Preview can expose edits before you intend to send them live; choose and verify the correct output.

The stream stutters or the computer struggles
Reduce scene complexity or lower the resolution or frame rate, then reassess. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect CPU needs, so a configuration that works for one computer or scene may not work for another.
The video works but the audio is wrong
Choose and verify the intended microphone in the production or receiving app’s audio settings. Camera selection and microphone selection are separate; do not assume the webcam’s built-in microphone is the one being transmitted.
