To convert horizontal video for YouTube Shorts, make a vertical 9:16 edit and reframe the footage so the important subject stays in view. If the source is already on YouTube, you can create a Short in YouTube Studio; for a local file or precise crop control, use an editor such as Premiere Pro or CapCut. Preview the entire result before publishing: cropping a wide frame can cut off people, graphics, captions, or important action.
Choose the right workflow

YouTube’s current computer upload guidance accepts Shorts that are square or vertical and up to three minutes long. It does not require exactly 9:16; that ratio is a practical choice for a full-screen vertical presentation. YouTube’s Shorts upload requirements explain the platform rules.
Make a Short from a video already on YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and select the video you want to use.
- Open Clips and Shorts, then choose Short.
- Select the part you want by highlighting transcript text or setting start and end points on the timeline. AI suggestions may be offered in selected countries and languages.
- Preview the segment. Check its timing, framing, and captions; adjust the start and end points as needed.
- Create a draft, complete the upload details, and publish when ready.
YouTube’s preview may show temporary bars on some scenes; the final Short may show a blurred crop in those areas. In documented cases, the source video is automatically associated as a related video, except for Shorts set to private, unlisted, or Made for Kids. This tool is useful for selecting a moment from an existing upload, but YouTube’s documentation does not promise a frame-by-frame reframing interface equivalent to desktop editing. Use an editor if you need to control how the crop follows a subject or reposition graphics.

Reframe a local file in Premiere Pro
- Select the sequence in the Timeline, right-click it, and choose Auto Reframe Sequence.
- Set the target ratio to Vertical 9:16 and create the sequence.
- Play through the complete edit. Inspect every cut and shots where a person or other subject moves sideways across the frame.
- If the framing misses something important, use Position, Scale, or Rotation in Effect Controls. Add keyframes when the crop must follow a moving subject.
Premiere Pro’s Auto Reframe can be applied to individual clips or a complete sequence. Automatic framing is a starting point, not a guarantee that every person or graphic will remain visible. Adobe’s current guidance is available in its Auto Reframe tutorial and Auto Reframe overview.
Reframe a local file in CapCut
- Import the horizontal clip into CapCut.
- Change the canvas or aspect ratio to vertical.
- Choose Auto reframe and set the ratio to 9:16.
- Review the whole result, checking subject placement, action, captions, and overlays. Adjust the framing manually if the crop loses anything important.
- Export the finished vertical video.
CapCut’s documented workflow describes these steps, but does not establish that automatic framing works correctly for every clip. Its guide warns that fast movement, multiple people, and overlays may confuse the framing in its sports example. See CapCut’s Auto Reframing guide.

Choose a crop that fits the footage
- One speaker or a centered subject: A full-screen crop that tracks the subject often works well. Check movement at each cut and add corrections where needed.
- Several people or action near the edges: Review every shot carefully. A 9:16 crop removes much of the original horizontal image, so tracking one person may hide another or change the meaning of a group scene.
- Important graphics or captions: Check that all text remains readable and inside the frame. Reposition overlays or use a layout that retains more of the landscape image if a full-screen crop would cut them off.
- A moment already hosted on YouTube: Use Studio if its segment selection and framing are sufficient; use an editor when you need more precise composition control.
Check format, audio, and rights before publishing
- Format and length: Under YouTube’s current computer upload instructions, the finished Short must be square or vertical and no longer than three minutes. A 9:16 frame is a common full-screen target, not the only eligible ratio.
- Android upload editing: YouTube’s Android instructions describe trimming a square or vertical video, then using an editor screen for text, filters, music, or other audio. Audio chosen from YouTube’s library is limited to 15-second clips under that guidance. See YouTube’s Android Shorts upload instructions.
- Copyright: Use copyright-protected material only when you have approval. Otherwise, YouTube says a Short may receive a Content ID claim or, if a valid notice is submitted, a takedown or strike. Check the applicable rights for footage, music, and other material before publishing.
Troubleshoot common reframing problems
