Multistreaming can help your YouTube audience grow by putting the same live broadcast in front of people on more than one platform. It expands where viewers can discover and watch you, but it does not guarantee that viewers elsewhere will visit your YouTube channel, subscribe, or prompt YouTube to recommend you more often. Treat it as a way to broaden distribution, then use YouTube Analytics to see whether it is working for your channel.
What multistreaming does—and what it does not
YouTube calls multistreaming “simulstreaming”: broadcasting the same live content to multiple platforms at the same time. The practical benefit is availability. Viewers can watch on the platform they already use, including people who might not otherwise encounter your YouTube broadcast. YouTube describes this as a way to reach viewers on their preferred platforms (YouTube Help: simulstreaming).
That wider distribution is an opportunity, not a YouTube growth guarantee. It does not establish that viewers on another platform will move to YouTube, subscribe, or cause YouTube to recommend your channel more often. Measure those outcomes instead of assuming them.
Choose how to send the stream to multiple platforms
The right setup depends on your computer, how many destinations you need, and how much control you want over production. YouTube distinguishes between local encoders and cloud services; the specific features, supported platforms, limits, reliability, and costs vary by provider, so check current terms before choosing.

| Approach | May suit you if | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local hardware or software encoder | You want control and high-quality production and have a powerful computer. | Computer processing load, setup complexity, the destinations supported by your specific software, and reliability. |
| Cloud encoder or relay service | You want a simpler setup, less load on an older computer, or distribution to more than two channels. | Subscription costs and plan limits, supported destinations, service reliability, latency, and how the service handles audience and chat management. |
A local encoder runs on your device and can send a stream to multiple platforms if the software supports it. A cloud service receives a stream and relays it to selected platforms. YouTube notes that cloud services may offer free plans with varying limits and paid plans with additional capabilities; it does not endorse a particular provider or establish that all services support the same destinations (YouTube Help: simulstreaming).
Prepare your YouTube channel and stream
Before arranging multiple destinations, make sure YouTube streaming itself is ready. YouTube says the channel must be verified, live streaming must be enabled, and the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Other platforms may impose their own account eligibility rules.

- Confirm live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel and check the status of any other destination accounts.
- Obtain the correct stream credentials for each platform. Treat stream keys as private; do not show them on screen or share them publicly.
- Check that your upload connection can support the stream you plan to send. Leave headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic.
- Test the encoder and each destination before an important broadcast. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and verify that the stream is accessible from the channel or watch page.
- Monitor audio and video during the test and broadcast. YouTube recommends checking the archive and playback on channel/watch pages and mobile devices as part of an encoder test.
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming workflows. An encoder is useful for gameplay, overlays, or external production hardware such as microphones, cameras, and preamps. You do not need expensive equipment just to multistream; use what gives you reliable, intelligible audio and video, and test it before going live (YouTube Help: live streaming).
Measure whether multistreaming is helping your YouTube audience
Use YouTube Analytics to separate discovery from viewing and retention. No single metric proves that multistreaming caused growth, but a consistent comparison can show whether your YouTube results changed while you widened distribution.

- Impressions: how often YouTube showed your thumbnail on YouTube. This does not count impressions on external sites or apps.
- Click-through rate: how often viewers watched after seeing the thumbnail. Read it alongside impressions and the stream’s topic and packaging.
- Views and average view duration: views indicate starts; average view duration is the average minutes watched per view.
- Traffic sources: where viewers found the stream, including YouTube search, suggested videos, playlists, and external sources. Search-term reports can also show how people found it.
- Livestream measures: Analytics can include new subscribers, concurrent viewers, watch time, retention, traffic sources, and devices. Available reports and figures in Analytics and Live Control Room may differ.
These measures help answer distinct questions: Did people encounter the stream on YouTube? Did they choose to watch? Did they stay? Did visits come from an external source? YouTube’s livestream analytics guidance recommends examining impressions, click-through rate, views, average view duration, and traffic sources; compare livestreams with livestreams because audience behavior differs by format (YouTube Help: understand your livestream analytics; YouTube Help: understand your YouTube content performance).
Make a useful comparison
- Compare similar livestreams by topic, format, length, schedule, title and thumbnail approach, and promotion. A gaming stream, interview, and music performance may attract different behavior even on the same channel.
- Use comparable date ranges and stream types. Look at patterns across multiple broadcasts rather than treating one unusually strong or weak stream as proof.
- Review YouTube impressions and traffic sources alongside views, average view duration, concurrent viewers, and new subscribers.
- Check which streams performed well and when viewers found or watched them. Use those patterns to refine your programming, schedule, and distribution choices.
This is a practical comparison, not a controlled causal test. YouTube’s official guidance provides no multistreaming-specific benchmark or causal estimate of subscriber growth, so avoid claims that a particular percentage increase is typical.

Use YouTube Live Redirect as a separate follow-on tactic
Live Redirect is not multistreaming: it sends viewers from an eligible YouTube livestream to a Premiere or another live stream after the broadcast ends. It can help maintain viewing continuity or support a collaboration. YouTube’s current help page says a sending channel needs more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes; sending viewers to another channel requires that channel’s permission (YouTube Help: Live Redirect).
Keep a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos
If your goal is a continuous YouTube broadcast made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or a multistream across platforms, that is a different workflow. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the videos looping without requiring your computer or home connection to stay on.
