To clip your own long-form video into a YouTube Short, use YouTube Studio on a computer for transcript or timeline selection, or open the video in the YouTube mobile app and choose Remix > Edit into a Short for an eligible upload. If the video belongs to someone else, use YouTube’s available remix tools rather than downloading and re-uploading it.
Make a Short from your video in YouTube Studio
YouTube Studio lets you select a segment from one of your existing long-form uploads and prepare it as a Short draft. The workflow supports transcript-based selection and timeline timestamps.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content > Videos.
- Select the long-form video you want to clip.
- In the left menu, open Clips and Shorts.
- Select Create clip or Short, then choose Short.
- Choose the excerpt. You can select text from the transcript and confirm it, or enter start and end times in the timeline editor. If an AI-powered suggestion is available, you can choose it and adjust its start and end points.
- Review the segment and create a draft. Complete the Short’s upload details before publishing.
AI-powered suggestions and outlines are not available to everyone. YouTube lists them for creators in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, in English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, or Spanish. The option may not appear if your location or language is outside those lists.
Use the mobile app’s Edit into a Short option
For a quicker route from a video watch page, YouTube’s mobile app can turn up to 60 seconds from an eligible video you uploaded into a Short.

- Open your video in the YouTube mobile app.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds of the video, then continue to the Shorts creation tools.
- Add any desired text, filters, or other creative touches, then complete the upload.
YouTube says Shorts made this way link back to the original video, giving viewers a route to discover it. This option is limited to your own long-form public videos. It is not available for private or unlisted uploads or videos with third-party copyright claims. Also, Audio Library music and other sounds cannot be used on Shorts created from your own videos through Edit into a Short. See YouTube’s mobile instructions and eligibility guidance.
If Edit into a Short is missing
- Confirm that the source is a long-form video uploaded by you and set to public.
- Check whether the video has a third-party copyright claim.
- In YouTube Studio, check that Shorts sampling is allowed for the video.
Clip someone else’s video using YouTube remix tools
If the source belongs to another creator, open its watch page in the YouTube mobile app, tap Remix, and choose an available option such as Cut, Green Screen, Collab, or Use this sound. Which controls appear depends on the video or Short and the app interface.

Remix availability can depend on the source’s privacy settings, copyright claims, the creator’s settings, and music licenses. A creator can restrict remixing, or the source can later be deleted. YouTube’s remixed-content guidance explains the tools and restrictions.
Using YouTube’s remix tools is different from downloading someone else’s video and uploading it as your own. YouTube warns that copyright-protected material in a Short made outside its tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid copyright takedown request. Giving credit or using only a short excerpt does not by itself establish that you have permission to reuse it.

Choose a segment that works as a Short
- Pick a complete moment. Choose a section that makes sense on its own rather than a fragment that depends on too much earlier context.
- Check the opening. Make sure the first frame and words do not cut off the setup a viewer needs.
- Preview the ending. Avoid stopping mid-sentence or before the moment resolves.
- Check the crop. Keep the person, action, or key visual clear in a square or vertical frame. A landscape source may need careful framing.
These are editing suggestions, not additional YouTube requirements or guarantees of reach.
Length and format when uploading from a computer
YouTube’s computer-upload guidance says a Short can be up to three minutes and must have a square or vertical aspect ratio. The limit for the mobile Edit into a Short source selection is different: up to 60 seconds. Check the current computer upload requirements when preparing a file outside YouTube’s clipping tools.
