For a quick app or game clip on Windows, try Xbox Game Bar. For a selected region, use Snipping Tool if video recording is available in your Windows build. Choose OBS Studio when you need multiple sources, audio controls, or detailed output settings; use Clipchamp for screen-and-camera capture followed by editing. Bandicam is another third-party option for screen, game, webcam, and capture-device recording.
Before an important session, confirm the capture area and audio sources, then record and play back a short test. Windows tools do not all capture the same parts of the desktop or audio.
Choose a tool based on what you need to capture
| Tool | Best fit | What it can do | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Bar | Quick app or game clip | Start and stop with Windows+Alt+R; toggle the microphone with Windows+Alt+M; save an MP4 in Videos/Captures. | Microsoft’s walkthrough is app- and game-oriented. Check that your target and desired audio are captured. |
| Snipping Tool | Recording a selected region on supported Windows 11 installations | Microsoft identifies it as a Windows 11 screen-video option. | Interface steps and audio support depend on the installed build. Microsoft’s overview says audio recording is not supported in the described workflow; verify current behavior before relying on it. |
| OBS Studio | Multi-source recordings, games, webcam overlays, and audio control | Display, window, and Windows Game Capture sources; webcam/video capture; configurable output. By default, OBS captures desktop audio and a microphone. | It needs source and output setup. Check the mixer and make a test recording. |
| Bandicam | Third-party screen, game, webcam, or capture-device recording | Bandicam’s documentation describes each of these recording modes and publishes system requirements. | Check requirements for the current version and your PC. The available documentation does not establish a comparative performance advantage or current price. |
| Clipchamp | Screen-and-camera capture followed by editing | Capture a screen, window, or tab; record screen and camera together; edit afterward. | Browser-tab audio requires tab capture with audio sharing enabled. The Windows app can select Edge tabs; for a Chrome tab, use Clipchamp in Chrome. |
Choose the simplest option that captures the area and sound you need. For detailed setup, Microsoft’s Windows 11 screen-recording guide identifies Snipping Tool and Xbox Game Bar; Microsoft’s support instructions explain Game Bar recording. The product workflows and limitations above are documented by the OBS Project, Bandicam, and Microsoft Support. Interfaces and versions can change; check the current documentation for the build you use.

- To toggle the microphone, press Windows+Alt+M. Check your audio settings if you also need application sound.

Record a selected area with Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool video recording is available on supported Windows 11 installations, but the exact interface and audio behavior may vary by build. Open Snipping Tool and check whether its video-recording control is present. Select the area, record a brief sample, and play it back to check the picture and sound. Microsoft’s overview says audio recording is not supported in the described workflow, so do not assume it will capture system audio or narration; use another tool if audio is essential.
Set up an OBS recording
- Configure the first run. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard if useful; it considers your intended use and computer resources.
- Add the picture source. Add Display Capture for a display or Window Capture for one window. For a Windows game, add Game Capture. Add a video-capture source for a webcam or capture device.
- Check audio. Watch the Audio Mixer meters while speaking or playing sound. OBS captures desktop audio and a microphone by default, but select devices manually if the meters do not show the inputs you want.
- Set output and destination. Choose the recording path and output options, then start with Start Recording in the Controls dock.
- Test playback. Make a short recording and check the picture, sound, and saved file before beginning a long session.
The OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide documents its sources, default audio capture, output configuration, and recommendation to test settings. More choices give OBS flexibility, but also mean there are more settings to verify.
Record with Clipchamp, including a browser tab
- Open Clipchamp’s Record & create area and choose screen recording or screen-and-camera recording.
- Select a microphone if you want narration, then choose a screen, window, or browser tab.
- For browser-tab audio, use tab capture and enable audio sharing. The Windows app can select Edge tabs; to record a Chrome tab, open Clipchamp in Chrome.
- Preview the recording and edit it as needed. If the displayed maximum recording time is reached, Microsoft’s instructions suggest making shorter recordings and combining them.
What to check before you press Record
- Capture scope: decide whether you need an app or game, one window, a selected region, or an entire display. Game Bar is app/game oriented; Snipping Tool is the region option where available; OBS offers display, window, and game sources; Clipchamp can capture a screen, window, or tab.
- Audio: choose whether you need desktop or system sound, microphone narration, or both. Confirm the relevant meters or make a test recording; tab audio has a separate sharing step in Clipchamp.
- Camera: use an OBS video-capture source for a webcam overlay, or Clipchamp’s screen-and-camera workflow for simultaneous capture.
- After-recording work: Clipchamp includes editing in its workflow. With other tools, plan to edit the saved clip separately if needed.
- Requirements: confirm your Windows build and hardware support, especially before installing third-party software such as Bandicam.
These are feature and workflow distinctions, not results of a controlled comparison. The available documentation does not establish a performance winner among the tools.

Common problems and fixes
The recording shortcut does nothing
Confirm that the game or app is open and that Game Bar can capture it. If you need to record an arbitrary desktop region, try Snipping Tool on a supported Windows 11 build or set up a Display Capture source in OBS.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The video has no microphone or desktop sound
Check that the microphone was enabled in Game Bar, that the intended input is selected, or that OBS’s Audio Mixer meters respond. In Clipchamp, enable audio sharing when capturing a browser tab. Make another short test after changing a setting.
The recording shows the wrong area
Check the selected window, display, game, or region before recording. In OBS, verify the active source; in Clipchamp, confirm whether you chose a screen, window, or tab.

Clipchamp does not show the browser tab you need
The Windows app can select Edge tabs. For a Chrome tab, use Clipchamp in Chrome. If the tab’s sound is missing, repeat the tab-capture workflow with audio sharing enabled.
Snipping Tool has no video option or expected audio
Its recording control and behavior can vary by Windows build. Check whether the control is available and confirm audio support on your installation. If audio is required and the workflow does not provide it, use another tool and test it first.
