For a quick capture of a webpage, use Chrome Headless; for repeatable reviews, use Playwright or Puppeteer so you can control the viewport, page state, and output. Choose a screenshot to review screen layout and a PDF to review pagination or share a document. The key is to set capture dimensions and readiness deliberately: a timeout alone cannot guarantee that an application has finished rendering.
Choose the right output for the review

For visual layout verification and bug documentation, a screenshot is useful; for page structure and text, Playwright recommends accessibility snapshots as a more suitable representation.
Take a quick screenshot or PDF with Chrome
Chrome Headless can save either artifact directly from a URL. Run these commands in a shell with Chrome available on the command path; files are written to the current working directory. The Chrome for Developers reference documents these command-line options at Chrome Headless command-line reference.

Control when Chrome captures
Use --timeout to set a maximum wait before capture, including while a page is still loading. Use --virtual-time-budget to advance time-dependent JavaScript. These options control timing but do not know when application-specific content is ready. If a page loads data after the initial render, a timed capture can show an incomplete state; use browser automation and wait for a known ready condition for a repeatable review.
Make repeatable screenshots with Playwright
Playwright is a better fit when you need a consistent viewport, full-page output, a chosen filename, or a scripted capture process. Install Playwright in your JavaScript project using its documented setup, then use its Page API: Playwright Page API.

Use a condition tied to the page you are reviewing, such as the appearance of a completed component or content loaded from the application. Omit fullPage: true for a viewport-only capture. For an element-only capture, locate the target and call screenshot() on that element locator.

Viewport and pixel scale
Set the viewport intentionally: a desktop review and a narrow mobile review are different design checks. Playwright’s screenshot CLI documentation notes that high-resolution capture uses device pixels, so pixel coordinates in the resulting image no longer match the CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands. Keep that distinction in mind if you compare an image against automation coordinates.

Playwright and Puppeteer generate PDFs using print CSS by default. For a paginated document, retain print media and provide appropriate @media print styles. If the PDF should preserve screen styling instead, emulate screen media first. See the Playwright Page API and Puppeteer Page.pdf() documentation.

Decide page size, margins, and color treatment
- Paper size: Choose a format such as A4 when the review needs predictable pages.
- Margins: Set them to control printable space and avoid content sitting too close to page edges.
- Backgrounds: Set
printBackground: truewhen the PDF needs background graphics. - CSS page sizing: Playwright’s
preferCSSPageSizelets CSS@pagedimensions take priority over the configured PDF format. - Colors: PDF colors may be modified for printing by default. Playwright points to
-webkit-print-color-adjustwhen exact colors are needed.
Open the exported PDF and check that its colors, fonts, images, and page breaks suit the review. A browser screenshot and a PDF can legitimately differ because a PDF is paginated and may use print-specific styles.
Build a repeatable review process
- Record the input: Save the page URL or HTML build identifier, browser or tool version, viewport width and height, and capture date.
- Choose the artifact: Use a viewport image for a fixed-size layout check, a full-page image for a long composition, an element image for a component, or a PDF for pagination.
- Wait for page readiness: Prefer an application-specific selector or condition over a fixed delay when content loads asynchronously.
- Set PDF behavior separately: Decide print or screen media, paper format, margins, background graphics, and whether CSS page sizing should take priority.
- Inspect the saved output: Check that the intended page state, fonts, images, colors, and (for PDFs) pagination are visible before sharing.
Troubleshoot incomplete or unexpected captures
The screenshot shows a loading state or missing content
A fixed timeout may expire before the page’s own loading process completes, and a virtual-time budget is not an application-ready signal. In Playwright, wait for a selector or other condition associated with the content under review, then capture.
The image has the wrong dimensions or framing
Set the viewport before navigating or capturing. Decide whether the review calls for just the viewport or the full scrollable page; these produce different images. If using high-resolution capture, remember that image pixels and CSS-pixel coordinates differ.

The PDF looks unlike the webpage
Check whether the PDF was rendered with print media, which is the default for Playwright and Puppeteer. Use screen media when screen styling is the intended subject, or adjust the page’s print styles when the goal is a paginated document. Also check paper size, margins, backgrounds, CSS @page sizing, and print color adjustment.
The PDF includes browser-added details
For Chrome Headless PDF output, add --no-pdf-header-footer to suppress the browser-added date/time, URL, and page number.
