Restream’s free plan allows two channels live at once, but includes Restream branding and restricts some destinations. This guide covers the documented setup, the settings to check, and the trade-offs before you go live.
What you need to multistream for free
- OBS Studio: Encodes and sends your live program.
- A Restream account: Receives the OBS stream and forwards it to selected platforms.
- Two eligible destinations: YouTube and one other service supported on Restream’s free plan. Restream says the free plan allows two channels active at once; it may let you add more channels to the account, but only two can be enabled simultaneously. Check Restream’s current plan details before relying on a particular destination.
- A YouTube channel ready to go live: Restream’s guide says the channel owner must connect the account, and that a first-time YouTube streamer needs phone verification followed by a 24-hour wait. Requirements can depend on the account, so confirm readiness in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming help has current account guidance.
You do not need a separate encoder for each platform in this workflow. Restream describes its relay as avoiding multiple local encodes and additional upload bandwidth for each destination; those are vendor claims, and your own network and OBS setup still affect the stream.
Set up OBS, Restream, and YouTube
- Confirm YouTube live access. Sign in to the channel you own, open YouTube Studio, and check that live streaming is enabled. If this is your first broadcast, allow time for any verification or activation wait shown for your account.
- Connect your destinations in Restream. Sign in or create an account, then use Restream’s channel-connection flow to authorize YouTube and the second platform. Check the destination against the free-plan restrictions first. Restream says Facebook Pages, Facebook Groups, and custom RTMP destinations require a paid plan.
- Connect OBS to Restream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose Restream if it is available in the service list, and authorize your account. Alternatively, select a custom streaming service and enter the server and stream key provided by Restream. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen.
- Choose the receiving channels. In Restream, enable YouTube and the second destination. Confirm both are selected before starting the broadcast.
- Set and test the video output. Use the output recommendations below as a starting point, then check the requirements for both destinations. Make an unlisted or private test where available; verify picture, sound, and destination status before switching to a public stream.
- Start the stream from OBS. Restream’s documented workflow is to start the broadcast in OBS after connecting the account and selecting channels. Confirm the live status at each destination rather than assuming that a successful OBS connection means both platforms are receiving it.
Restream’s step-by-step instructions are at How to stream to Restream with OBS.
OBS settings to check before going live
Restream’s YouTube guide gives the following recommendations. They are provider guidance, not universal best settings: use the destination platforms’ current specifications and choose values your upload connection can sustain.

| Setting | Restream’s YouTube guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Use an encoder and output format accepted by the destinations. |
| Rate control | CBR | In OBS, set a constant bitrate for the stream output. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; 4 seconds maximum | Check the interval required by the other destination as well. |
| Video bitrate | 3,000–40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and frame rate | Pick a bitrate appropriate to your output and reliable upload capacity; the top of the range is not right for every stream. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 240p–2160p and up to 60 FPS | Use an output supported by both destinations and your connection. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps stereo | Listen to a test for clipping, missing audio, or sync problems. |
See Restream’s YouTube live-streaming guide for its full recommendations. Platform requirements can change, and settings suitable for YouTube may not meet another service’s rules.
Free-plan limits and trade-offs
- Two live destinations: The free plan supports two active channels at a time, which is enough for YouTube plus one other platform. Restream’s help page says more than two simultaneous channels requires a paid plan.
- Branding: Restream says free streams include a small watermark and/or a Restream link in the stream description.
- Destination restrictions: Facebook Pages, Groups, and custom RTMP destinations are listed as paid-plan features. Confirm the current rules for your intended combination before configuring the stream.
- Platform rules still apply: Multistreaming does not override a destination’s eligibility, content, or simultaneous-broadcast policies. YouTube advises checking the relevant platform documentation when in doubt; see YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions help.
- Local alternatives differ: This documented workflow uses a cloud relay. Requirements and reliability for local multi-output plugins are not established here, so do not assume they have the same setup or network demands.
Copyright and content checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for every element you send, including music, video clips, images, and guest contributions. A stream being sent through a relay does not change the platforms’ copyright rules. Review YouTube’s applicable policies and the other destination’s rules, and obtain permission where required. A practical starting point is the copyright safety checklist; it is a checklist, not legal advice or a guarantee that content is cleared.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- YouTube is unavailable to connect: Check that live streaming is enabled, the connected account owns the channel, and any account-specific verification or activation wait is complete.
- A destination is missing or cannot be enabled: Verify that it is supported on the free plan. Facebook Pages, Groups, and custom RTMP destinations require a paid plan according to Restream’s plan guidance.
- OBS connects but one platform is not live: Check that the destination is enabled in Restream, then inspect its status there and at the platform. Reauthorize a disconnected account if necessary.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution, or use a more stable upload connection. A higher bitrate is useful only if the connection can sustain it.
- Video is rejected or unstable: Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate against both platforms’ current requirements; test again before the public broadcast.
- Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync: Confirm OBS is capturing the intended microphone or desktop source, check audio levels and encoding, then make a short test and listen at the destination.
- The free stream shows branding: Restream lists branding on its free plan. If that is not acceptable, review its current paid-plan terms or choose another approach.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that stays live around the clock, that is different from multistreaming a live OBS program. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home, video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
