After a WordPress security patch, check more than whether the homepage loads. Monitor important URLs from outside the site, review performance and WordPress Site Health, test key pages and user flows against a pre-patch baseline, and check for unexpected file changes. These checks cover different failure modes: a site can be reachable while pages are slow, broken, or altered.
What to monitor after a WordPress security patch
Use several complementary checks rather than treating one green uptime result as proof that the site is healthy. WordPress recommends combining internal and external uptime monitoring; external checks see the site as a visitor or remote service does, while internal visibility can help expose server-side issues. A homepage-only check cannot confirm that other pages or workflows work.
- Reachability: Can an outside service request the URLs that matter?
- Performance: Are pages loading acceptably, or are transactions and requests unusually slow?
- Rendered pages and user flows: Do important pages look and behave as they did before the patch?
- WordPress diagnostics: Does Site Health report critical issues or useful configuration details?
- File integrity: Were files added or changed unexpectedly?
WordPress discusses these monitoring layers in its Monitoring guidance, including URL checks, performance tracking, and the value of internal and external monitoring together.
Before applying the patch, create a baseline
A comparison is useful only if you know what the site looked like and how it behaved before the update. Recording a baseline is an operational practice, not a WordPress-mandated procedure.

- Record the patch window. Note when the update begins and finishes, along with the WordPress core, plugin, or theme update involved.
- Choose high-value URLs. Include the homepage, important landing pages, login if relevant, and pages used for a primary contact, signup, or purchase flow. Choose pages based on your site; WordPress does not prescribe a fixed list.
- Record current behavior. Note whether each URL loads, how it renders, and any important actions that work. Capture a known-good page state if visual comparison will help.
- Save performance observations. Record page-load times or existing monitoring data for the selected pages and important transactions so you have a point of comparison.
- Confirm monitoring coverage. Make sure an external monitor checks the chosen URLs. Add internal monitoring where feasible.
Check uptime and performance after the patch
Verify the important URLs externally
Review the external monitor for each selected URL, not just the homepage. Confirm that it can reach the pages and that alerts are configured to reach someone who can investigate. Monitoring one or more URLs is a way to detect availability problems, but it does not establish that every page or workflow is healthy.
Look beyond an “up” result
A server may answer requests while users experience slow pages or impaired transactions. Compare page-load observations and slow transactions with your baseline. WordPress recommends tracking page-load time, slowest average transactions, and problematic queries or requests; its guidance does not prescribe a particular commercial monitoring service or a universal acceptable threshold.
Inspect pages and key flows against the baseline
Open the selected pages after the patch and compare their rendered appearance with the known-good state. Then exercise the important actions a visitor uses, such as submitting a contact form or completing the site’s main conversion flow. A successful URL request alone cannot prove that controls, forms, or page content still behave as intended.
This page-by-page visual and functional review is a practical workflow inferred from WordPress’s monitoring guidance; WordPress does not prescribe a particular screenshot-diff product or comparison procedure. Choose an approach suited to the risk: a manual review may be enough for a small site, while a site with many critical pages may benefit from repeatable captures and comparisons.

Review WordPress Site Health
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Tools > Site Health.
- On Status, review critical issues, recommended improvements, and passed tests.
- Open Info when you need technical details about WordPress, themes, plugins, server setup, database, or permissions.
- Investigate findings that appeared around the patch window and compare relevant configuration details with your expectations.
Site Health is an in-dashboard diagnostic view, not an external uptime monitor. Use it alongside URL and performance monitoring rather than as a substitute. See the WordPress Site Health screen documentation for the Status and Info views.
Check file integrity for unexpected changes
Review file-change alerts or version-control differences for additions and modifications you did not expect from the patch. WordPress’s Hardening WordPress guidance describes approaches including revision control, comparing a clean test copy with production, system utilities, and operating-system-level monitoring. Its stated goals for file-system tracking include detecting changed and added files, logging changes, enabling granular reversion, and automating alerts.
A file-integrity alert is a lead to investigate, not by itself proof of compromise: updates legitimately change files. Correlate the change with the patch and expected version changes before reverting or escalating it.
Correlate symptoms with update events
If a page breaks or files change, compare the timing with the patch and other core, plugin, or theme updates. A WordPress.org directory listing for SiteVitals Monitor says the plugin reports core, plugin, and theme update events—with version transitions and success or failure—to a SiteVitals timeline, and that the service requires an account. This is an example of update-event logging, not evidence that it detects all page changes or an independent effectiveness review.

Use ScreenshotNeo to capture post-patch page states
For a repeatable rendered-page check, a screenshot can give you a visual record to compare with the baseline. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its clean-shot options can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status, and cache hits cost nothing. See ScreenshotNeo for the service and its API documentation for request options.
A basic request captures a page to an image file. Replace the target URL with a page on your site and use your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Compare the resulting image with a known-good capture. A screenshot helps assess rendered appearance; it does not establish that a form submission or other interaction works, so exercise key flows separately.

Use one API call to capture a post-patch page. Replace the URL with the page you want to inspect:

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Troubleshoot common post-patch findings
- The monitor says the site is up, but a page is broken. Add the affected URL to monitoring and inspect the page and its key interactions. Reachability for one URL does not certify every page or flow.
- Pages load, but feel slower. Compare page-load observations and slow transactions with the pre-patch baseline; investigate problematic requests or queries rather than relying on a status result alone.
- A visual comparison differs. Check whether the patch or another expected update changed the page, then inspect the rendered page and its controls. A visual difference does not on its own identify the cause.
- File monitoring reports changes. Compare the changed files with expected update activity and version-control or clean-copy differences. Investigate unexplained additions or modifications; do not assume every change is malicious.
- Site Health shows a finding. Read the specific Status item and use Info for related technical configuration details. Site Health is diagnostic context, not proof of external availability.
- You cannot connect a failure to the patch. Compare the symptom’s timing with the recorded patch window and update-event history, including core, plugin, and theme updates where available.
Choose monitoring that matches the risk
When selecting or configuring monitoring, compare external versus internal vantage point, the number and importance of URLs covered, alert delivery, and whether performance is tracked as well as availability. For page changes, distinguish rendered appearance from text/content changes and file changes; check whether the method preserves a baseline and whether alerts can be correlated with WordPress update events. No single layer answers all of those questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WordPress Site Health monitor uptime?
No. Site Health is an in-dashboard diagnostic view; use external URL monitoring to check reachability.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a screenshot comparison prove that a page works?
No. It helps compare rendered appearance. Test important interactions, such as form submissions, separately.
Should every file change after an update be treated as malicious?
No. Updates legitimately modify files. Compare changes with expected update activity and investigate unexplained additions or modifications.
