If a social media post matters, save it while it is still visible. Use the platform’s download or save option when available; otherwise take a screenshot for a quick visual record, or screen-record only when motion matters. Keep the post URL, account name, and capture date with the copy so you can identify it later.
Choose the right way to preserve a post

Screenshot behavior and notifications vary by platform and feature. Do not assume a screenshot is invisible to the other person; check the current rules for the specific feature. A screenshot is also not proof of authenticity by itself.
Save the post while it is visible
- Open the post and copy its URL. Note the account name and the date and time you captured it.
- Use the platform’s native save or download control if it is available and appropriate. Respect creator permissions and any visible notification.
- If there is no download option, take a screenshot. Record the screen only if movement or playback is important.
- Give the file a useful name and put it in a labeled folder. If the copy matters, keep a second copy in another location; a USB drive or portable SSD is optional.
- Keep sensitive captures private. Preserve relevant context, and do not imply that a saved copy overrides platform rules or another person’s rights.
Platform-specific options and limits
TikTok: download only when the creator allows it
For someone else’s post, open it, tap Share, then choose Save video or Save photo if the option appears. TikTok says a missing save control means the creator has not allowed downloads. For your own post, TikTok recommends enabling Save to device under More options on the Post screen; it also describes a Save control while editing. TikTok recommends downloading your own videos or photos before posting so you have offline copies. TikTok’s download instructions may change as the app’s interface evolves.
Snapchat: Story role matters, and the poster is notified
To save a Story you created, tap your Profile icon and the download icon beside the Story to save the whole Story. To save one Snap, expand the Story, open that Snap, then tap the download icon. If you are part of someone else’s Story, Snapchat says you can save only the Snaps you added. Snapchat also says the person who posted a Snap is notified when it is saved. These instructions concern saving Story Snaps; do not assume screenshot behavior is identical across other Snapchat features. See Snapchat’s Story-saving instructions.

X: request an archive for your own account
For a bulk copy of your own history, go to Settings and privacy, open the account or data section, and use the archive download control. X says its archive is machine-readable HTML and JSON and can include profile information, posts, Direct Messages, Moments, and attached images, videos, and GIFs. X says preparation may take a few days and that it will notify you when the archive is ready. It is useful for your account history, not an immediate way to save someone else’s post. If you plan to leave X and want your own history, request and download the archive before relying on deactivation. X says a deactivated account can be restored for up to 30 days if you log back in; after that, it is permanently deactivated and associated information is no longer available in its production tools.

Reddit: request your data, but do not wait for it to save an urgent post
A signed-in user can request a copy through Reddit’s data request form. Reddit says preparation may take up to 30 days. Posts, comments, votes, recent IP addresses, account preferences, and authorized apps are among information that can also be accessed through the account without waiting. For an individual post that may disappear soon, capture it while visible rather than waiting for an archive. See Reddit’s data-request information.
Reddit says deleted data is promptly made unavailable on the platform and subsequently deleted unless a legal reason or legitimate business need supports longer retention. It also says third parties accessing public content through its developer services must stop displaying or using that content after deletion. A capture you already made may remain useful to you, but preserve it responsibly. See Reddit’s privacy policy.

Instagram and Facebook: check the current in-app controls
Use any save, download, or account-export option currently offered in the app or its official help materials. Platform controls can change; check the live labels rather than relying on an old menu path. If a visible item may vanish before you find an export option, capture it promptly.

- No download button: On TikTok, the creator may have disabled downloads. Use a screenshot for a visible item if appropriate; do not try to bypass the restriction.
- Snapchat will not save the whole Story: Confirm it is your Story. A contributor to someone else’s Story can save only their own additions, and the poster is notified when a Snap is saved.
- Your account archive is not ready: X says archive preparation can take a few days; Reddit says a data request may take up to 30 days. Capture an urgent visible item separately.
- A screenshot lacks context: Add the post URL, account name, and capture date to the filename or a companion note. A visual capture may omit comments, thread context, and structured account data.
- The post is already gone: A screenshot or download cannot recover content that was never saved. Requesting your own account archive may help with your account history, but it is not an instant recovery method for someone else’s post.
