For repeatable captures, Playwright’s page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) captures the full scrollable document rather than just the visible viewport. Interactive pages may need extra steps—such as opening a menu or scrolling to trigger lazy content—so check the saved image before relying on it.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page screenshot covers the document’s scrollable page, not just the portion currently visible in the browser window. Playwright describes it as capturing the page as if it were displayed on a very tall screen. Playwright’s screenshot guide explains the concept and its basic controls.
That does not guarantee every kind of interactive content will appear. Content that loads only after scrolling, virtualized lists, nested scroll areas, and other dynamic behavior may need special handling. The official documentation does not establish universal behavior for these cases, so trigger the state you need and inspect the result.
Capture a full page manually in Firefox
Use the Developer Tools screenshot control
- Open the page in Firefox and open Developer Tools.
- If the screenshot control is missing, open DevTools settings. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the screenshot toolbar control to capture the page, then inspect the resulting image for missing or unexpected content.

Capture a menu or hover state
Open the Web Console and run :screenshot --delay 2 --fullpage. The delay gives you time to open a menu or invoke a hover state before the screenshot is taken. Adjust the delay as needed; then review the image to confirm that the intended state was captured.
Capture an element or copy the result
- Use
--selectorwith a CSS selector to capture an element and its descendants. - Use
--clipboardto copy the screenshot. - Use
--dprto adjust device-pixel-ratio sizing. - Use the helper’s filename options when you need to save the screenshot under a particular name.
Automate full-page capture with Playwright
For scripts and repeatable captures, Playwright’s fullPage option requests the full scrollable page instead of the visible viewport. The following JavaScript assumes you already have a Playwright page open on the target URL:

Wait for the content you intend to capture
Wait for the page’s actual content and intended interactive state to be ready before taking the screenshot. Playwright documents load-state waits, but it labels networkidle as discouraged for testing; a quiet network alone is not proof that an interactive page is complete. If the page reveals content on scroll, scroll through the relevant area before capture and check whether the content appears in the saved image.

Choose the output for its use
Playwright’s CLI guide documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output as well as high-resolution device-pixel capture. With high-resolution output, image pixel coordinates do not align with CSS-pixel mouse coordinates. If you need to read text, understand structure, or inspect interaction—not just judge visual layout—pair the screenshot with an accessibility snapshot. Playwright distinguishes screenshots for visual layout, charts or canvas content, and bug documentation from accessibility snapshots for text, structure, and interaction. See its CLI guide.

Check the result and troubleshoot common problems
Documentation describes available controls, not how every live website will render. Inspect the image at its intended use size, particularly when capturing a dynamic page.

- The image stops at the viewport: Confirm the full-page option was enabled: Firefox’s entire-page control or
:screenshot --fullpage, or Playwright’sfullPage: true. - A menu or hover state is missing: Invoke the state before capture. In Firefox, use
--delayto give yourself time; in Playwright, perform the interaction in the script and wait for the rendered state. - Content below the fold is missing: If the site loads content only after scrolling, scroll the relevant region before capture and inspect the output. Full-page options do not establish that every lazy-loaded implementation will be triggered automatically.
- A long list or nested area is incomplete: Virtualized lists and nested scroll containers are not guaranteed to render as a complete full-page image. Test the target page and consider whether the desired content exists in the document at capture time.
- The screenshot looks sharp but coordinates do not match: High-resolution device-pixel output uses a different pixel scale from CSS-pixel mouse coordinates. Account for the scale when comparing or automating pointer positions.
- You need text or structure, not just appearance: A screenshot is pixels, not a text or interaction representation. Add an accessibility snapshot when those details matter.
