To capture a website beyond the visible browser window, use Firefox or Chrome DevTools for a one-off image, or Playwright for repeatable captures. Set the review viewport first, let the page reach the state you want to inspect, then open the saved image and check it before sharing. A full-page image shows page structure and content below the fold; a component capture is better when feedback should focus on one element.
Choose the right capture for the review
- Full page: Use it to review hierarchy, page flow, and content across the entire document.
- One element: Capture a header, card, or other component when the review is narrowly focused. Firefox offers “Screenshot Node”; Chrome DevTools also supports node screenshots. Firefox screenshot documentation and Chrome DevTools tips describe these options.
For responsive feedback, decide the intended viewport and orientation before capturing. Include that context in the image filename or review note—for example, checkout-mobile-390x844.png—so reviewers know which layout they are seeing.
Capture a full page in Firefox
- Open the page in Firefox and open DevTools.
- Open DevTools Settings, find Available Toolbox Buttons, and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page if the button is not visible.
- Use the entire-page screenshot button. Firefox saves the image to the browser’s Downloads directory.
For a single component, open the Inspector, right-click the element’s node, and choose Screenshot Node. If you are comfortable using the Web Console, Mozilla also documents :screenshot <filename.png> --fullpage as an alternative. See Firefox’s screenshot guide and DevTools tips.
Capture a full-size screenshot in Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome and launch DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode if you need a particular device, viewport size, or orientation. Choose the dimensions or device before capturing.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu and choose Capture full size screenshot.
Capture screenshot records only the visible viewport; Capture full size screenshot includes content beyond it. Device Mode also simulates mobile or desktop modes and orientation. Automate repeat captures with Playwright
When the same page or review set needs captures repeatedly, Playwright can save the full scrollable page with fullPage: true. The following is a runnable Node.js example using Playwright’s Chromium browser. Install Playwright with npm install playwright, then save this as capture.js and run node capture.js https://example.com:

})();The viewport and device scale factor are explicit so repeated runs use the same layout dimensions and CSS-pixel scale. Change the viewport to match the review target. The API’s fullPage option captures the whole scrollable page rather than just the current viewport; see Playwright’s Page API.
Wait for the state you want—not just a timer
networkidle can be a useful starting point, but a page’s important content may depend on application-specific rendering, interaction, or deferred loading. If the screenshot is taken too early, wait for a meaningful selector or explicitly perform the required interaction before calling screenshot. A fixed delay can help with known animation or transition time, but it cannot establish that every site-specific action has completed.
Element and scale options
Playwright’s screenshot APIs support targeting an element and selecting output image type or scale. CSS scale keeps output dimensions aligned with CSS pixels; device scale uses the device pixel ratio and can produce a higher-resolution image. The documented screenshot tool does not combine an element target with fullPage, so choose the capture that matches the review: a focused element or a page-wide image. Higher pixel dimensions may help reviewers zoom, but can increase file size; choose based on how the image will be viewed. Details are in Playwright’s screenshot tool documentation.

Use headless Chrome for a command-line capture
Chrome’s headless command-line workflow is another option when you want a simple automated screenshot without writing a browser script. The official documentation shows --headless --screenshot together with --window-size. For example:

Chrome’s --timeout option sets the maximum wait before screenshot content is captured, even if the page is still loading. A timeout is only a timing limit, not proof that a page’s deferred sections or interactions are ready. See Chrome’s headless command-line documentation.
Prepare and check the image before sharing
- Set the review context. Decide whether the image should show the whole page or a specific component; choose the intended viewport and orientation before capture.
- Let the target state settle. Wait for initial rendering and the relevant asynchronous content or animations. If you are diagnosing loading, Chrome’s Network panel can record a screenshot sequence alongside network activity: Chrome Network panel documentation.
- Open the saved image. Scan the top, middle, and bottom. Look for missing sections, repeated sticky headers or other fixed elements, overlays, and content that appears only after scrolling.
- Label and share with context. Name the viewport or device in the file or review note, and tell reviewers whether the capture is full-page or element-only.
Capture controls do not guarantee a perfect result on every dynamic site. Inspecting the output is especially useful when content is deferred or changes as the page scrolls.

The distinction follows the documented manual browser controls and automation interfaces: DevTools is straightforward for a one-off, while a script or command is easier to reproduce for recurring artifacts. Playwright’s guide puts the purpose plainly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on.”

The screenshot stops at the visible viewport
In Chrome, choose Capture full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. In Playwright, include fullPage: true. In Firefox, enable and use the entire-page screenshot control.
Sections or images are missing
The page may not have rendered or loaded deferred content when captured. Wait for the relevant selector or interaction in Playwright, or allow the page to settle in the browser before using DevTools. Scroll through the saved image to confirm that below-the-fold material is present.

The screenshot includes a popup or overlay
Dismiss or accept the overlay if that is the state the review should show, then capture again. If the overlay is intentionally part of the design, leave it in place and note that context for reviewers.
A sticky header or repeated element appears more than once
Some pages change fixed or sticky elements as the viewport scrolls. Inspect the image at several points and, for repeat captures, consider whether the page needs a stable review state or a focused element screenshot instead.
The image is too large or hard to inspect
Use CSS-pixel scale for dimensions aligned to the layout, or device-pixel scale when zoom detail matters. If the full document is unwieldy for a focused comment, capture the component separately and label it as an element image.
Headless Chrome captures an incomplete page
Its --timeout caps how long Chrome waits; it does not ensure application-specific content is ready. Increase or adjust the wait for the page’s actual behavior, or use Playwright to wait for a meaningful selector before capturing.
