There is no universal checker that can reliably identify every copyrighted song in any audio file or live broadcast. Start with the platform’s own match or archive review when available, use song recognition to identify an unknown track, and then check the actual rights and license terms. A song match is not permission to use it—and no match does not prove that it is safe.
What music detection can—and cannot—tell you
Different tools answer different questions. A song-identification service may suggest a title and artist. YouTube’s Content ID compares eligible uploads with reference files supplied by participating rights holders. Twitch says its audio recognition scans VODs and clips. None of those results, by itself, determines whether your particular use is authorized.
- Song recognition: helps identify a likely title or artist. Verify the exact recording and version; identification is not a rights check.
- Platform matching: compares content with reference material available to that platform. What a match triggers depends on the platform and rights-holder settings.
- Rights review: establishes whether you have permission for the specific recording, composition, platform, territory, and type of use.
YouTube describes Content ID as a system for qualifying copyright owners, not a public checker for arbitrary audio files. When it finds a match, a rights holder can choose to block the video, monetize it, or track its viewership; outcomes can vary by geography. See YouTube’s explanation of how Content ID works and its Content ID eligibility requirements.
A match is not a legal verdict. YouTube acknowledges that Content ID can misidentify material or affect authorized uses, and says a claimant must have sufficient exclusive rights in the territories where it claims content. Review the claim and its basis before deciding how to respond.

Check a recording or audio file
If the recording is uploaded to YouTube
- Review the upload’s copyright or checks information in YouTube Studio. The exact interface and labels can change.
- If YouTube reports a Content ID claim, open it and check the matched work, claimant, affected segment, and action stated for the video.
- Compare the claimed segment with your actual recording. A match can be mistaken, so do not accept a claim as proof that the claimant controls the rights to your use.
- Before disputing, removing, or replacing audio, check whether you have documentation showing permission or another basis for using that exact material.
If you have a local file and no platform match
- Use a song-identification app or service to find a likely title and artist, if the sound is recognizable.
- Verify the version and recording against reliable credits or rights information; different recordings of the same composition can have different rights holders.
- Check permission for your intended use. A recognition result identifies a likely song, not whether it is cleared.
The official platform information cited here does not establish a particular consumer app’s accuracy. Nor does a missing Content ID match establish that a track is public domain, unprotected, or licensed: a database match only reflects reference material available to that system.
Check music in a live stream and its archive
YouTube streams
Use YouTube’s available live and post-stream notices or claims to review what the platform has flagged. A platform match may lead to blocking, monetization, or tracking under the rights holder’s settings. It is not a substitute for checking permission before you broadcast, and the absence of a notice is not proof of clearance.

Twitch streams, VODs, and clips
Twitch’s help material describes audio recognition for VODs and clips. Review the relevant recorded segment and current dashboard guidance if audio is flagged or muted. This archive scanning does not establish that every live sound is detected before or during a broadcast, or that every match will be caught. See Twitch’s DMCA and Copyright FAQs.
In a November 11, 2020 post, Twitch advised streamers not to play recorded music unless they own the necessary rights or have permission from the rights holder(s). It discussed rights-cleared libraries and checking a game’s EULA for in-game music, and suggested muting uncertain music or disabling VODs and clips. These are Twitch’s recommendations from 2020; verify a library’s current license and permitted uses before relying on it. Twitch also reported that more than 99% of the notifications it analyzed for late May through mid-October 2020 concerned tracks played in the background of streams. That figure describes Twitch’s analysis of that period, not current platform-wide rates or detection accuracy. See Twitch’s music-related copyright guidance.

Verify the license before using the track
Once you have identified the likely song and recording, check what the permission actually covers. Music can involve separate rights in the sound recording and the underlying composition, so confirm the relevant owners or licensor and the scope of the grant.
- Is this exact recording and composition covered?
- Does the permission cover your platform and territory?
- Does it allow live streaming, and separately, archives, VODs, or clips?
- Does it permit monetized or other commercial use?
- Are there restrictions on edits, attribution, duration, or audience?
Owning a download, paying for a consumer music subscription, or seeing “copyright free” in a track label does not by itself establish permission to stream it. Twitch’s 2020 guidance also cautions that a performing-rights license may not cover global streaming. Read the actual license terms for the intended use rather than inferring rights from how you obtained the music.

Common mistakes and what to do
- A song-identification result is treated as clearance: use it as a lead to identify the track, then verify rights and license scope.
- No platform claim is treated as proof of safety: absence of a match may simply mean there is no corresponding reference material available to that platform.
- A claim is treated as proof of infringement: inspect the matched segment and claimant, then review your permission and the platform’s dispute guidance. YouTube recognizes that misidentification can occur.
- A VOD scan is assumed to protect a live broadcast: Twitch’s stated recognition scope covers VODs and clips; do not treat it as a pre-broadcast clearance check.
- A license is assumed to cover every format or territory: check live use, archives, clips, monetization, platform, and geographic limits individually.
Keep a YouTube music stream running without leaving a computer on
Identifying music and clearing its use are separate from keeping a stream online. If you are running a YouTube channel with recordings you have the rights to use, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists continuously without requiring your computer or home connection to stay on. It does not identify music or grant music rights, so verify your permissions first.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the upload from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Content ID match prove that I need to remove a song?
No. It identifies a correspondence with reference material and may trigger a platform action, but you should review the matched segment, claimant, and your rights before deciding how to respond.
Can a music-identification app tell me whether a song is copyrighted?
It may suggest a song title or artist, but that is not a determination of copyright status or permission for your intended use.
Does StreamNeo check whether uploaded music is cleared?
No. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; you are responsible for verifying rights to the music.
