To capture a website from a coding agent, connect an MCP-compatible client to a browser server, navigate to the page, then call its screenshot tool. With Playwright MCP, use browser_take_screenshot for a viewport, element, or full-page image. To save a PDF, start the server with its PDF capability enabled and call browser_pdf_save. Give artifacts explicit filenames so they are easy to find.
What you need before capturing
- An MCP-compatible coding agent and an MCP server that exposes browser tools. Playwright MCP is one documented local option.
- The target page URL and permission to access it. Pages behind authentication may require an appropriate browser session.
- A decision about what evidence you need: a visible viewport, a particular element, a full-page image, or a PDF.
Playwright’s getting-started guide shows starting its server with npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931 and configuring a client to connect to http://localhost:8931/mcp. The location and format of the MCP configuration depend on the client, so use that client’s instructions alongside the Playwright MCP setup guide. The guide also documents an HTTP-session heartbeat timeout and a setting to change or disable it if a client or proxy does not respond to server pings; check its current instructions if sessions disconnect. No fixed Playwright release version is established by these documentation pages. Playwright MCP setup.
Capture a website screenshot with Playwright MCP
- Start and connect the server. Run
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931in an environment with Node.js and configure your MCP client to connect tohttp://localhost:8931/mcp. Follow the client-specific instructions for where its MCP configuration belongs. - Ask the agent to open the target URL. Have it navigate to the page and wait until the page is ready for the intended capture. For content that appears after interaction or loading, specify what state should be visible before the screenshot.
- Choose the capture mode. Ask the agent to call
browser_take_screenshotfor the viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page. Full-page mode cannot be combined with an element target. - Set a filename and format. Provide a descriptive filename, such as
artifacts/pricing-page.png, if you need a predictable artifact path. PNG is the documented default unless a different format is inferred from the extension or explicitly selected; JPEG and WebP are also supported. - Locate and inspect the result. Relative filenames resolve against the workspace root. If you omit a filename, the tool returns the image inline in its response and saves it with a timestamped name. Check the tool result and the output location before sharing or attaching it.
The screenshot tool’s options and behaviors are documented in the Playwright screenshot reference.
Choose the right capture and scale
| Choice | Use it for | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | A focused visual check of what is currently visible. | Navigate or scroll to the desired state before capturing. |
| Element | A single form, component, or region. | Select the target element; this cannot be combined with full-page mode. |
| Full page | A visual record of the whole scrollable document. | It captures beyond the current viewport and cannot be combined with an element target. |
| CSS-pixel scale | Output dimensions aligned with CSS-coordinate interactions. | This is the default scale. |
| Device scale | A higher-resolution image using the device pixel ratio. | Image pixel positions are not CSS-pixel click coordinates. |
Use screenshots to inspect visual layout, styling, and canvas or chart content. For page structure, text, and locating controls to interact with, ask the agent for an accessibility snapshot instead. Playwright’s documentation cautions: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” See the snapshot documentation and screenshot tool reference.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Save a webpage as a PDF
PDF export is not necessarily exposed by default in every Playwright MCP installation. Start the server with the PDF capability enabled, for example:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931 --caps=pdf
Then have the agent call browser_pdf_save, optionally specifying a filename such as artifacts/report.pdf. The capability reference documents --caps=pdf and shows how to combine capability names when optional tools are also needed. Check that your connected server exposes the tool before asking the agent to use it. See Playwright capabilities and the MCP introduction.

Playwright also documents PDF export through its separate CLI: playwright-cli pdf --filename=page.pdf. That CLI command is a different interface from the MCP tool, so do not assume their default filenames or output directories are identical. The CLI screenshots and PDF reference describes its commands and filename option.
Use explicit artifact paths
A stable, project-relative filename makes screenshots and PDFs easier to locate in an agent workflow, bug report, or code review. For MCP screenshots, relative paths resolve against the workspace root; omitted filenames produce timestamped output while also returning the image inline. PDF tool documentation likewise describes a timestamped default in its output directory. Because MCP and CLI defaults can differ, specify a filename and verify the resulting path rather than relying on an assumed shared default.

Local Playwright or hosted Capture MCP?
| Factor | Local Playwright MCP or CLI | Capture remote MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Configure a local server or use the documented CLI commands. | Connect to the documented remote Streamable HTTP endpoint. |
| Authentication | The cited setup example uses localhost; client and deployment details still matter. | Capture’s vendor documentation specifies a bearer token. |
| Documented capabilities | Browser navigation and automation; optional capabilities determine which MCP tools, including PDF export, are exposed. | Screenshots, PDFs, content extraction, and interactive browser sessions. |
| Good fit when | You want a configurable browser-automation workflow in your development environment. | You want a hosted capture service that works across supported MCP clients. |
Capture’s MCP integration documentation describes its remote endpoint and bearer-token authentication. The available documentation does not establish a fixed geographic restriction or a partner program. Compare the client support, authentication, exposed tools, PDF availability, and artifact handling that matter to your setup rather than assuming the two deployment models behave identically.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The agent cannot connect to Playwright MCP: Confirm the server process is running, the client endpoint matches
http://localhost:8931/mcp, and the MCP configuration is in the location expected by that client. If HTTP sessions drop, check the setup guide’s heartbeat settings for clients or proxies that do not answer pings. - The PDF tool is missing: Restart the server with
--caps=pdfand reconnect the client. Tool availability is controlled by server capabilities. - The screenshot is blank or shows the wrong state: Ask the agent to navigate to the exact page and wait for the relevant content or interaction state before calling the screenshot tool.
- The image is too small or pixel positions do not line up: Choose device scale for higher-resolution output, but remember its pixel coordinates are not CSS click coordinates. Use the default CSS-pixel scale when matching CSS-coordinate interactions.
- You cannot find the saved file: Supply an explicit filename and project-relative path, then check the workspace root and tool response. An omitted filename uses a timestamped name; do not assume the CLI and MCP tool share output defaults.
- You need to act on a control based on the capture: A screenshot is visual evidence, not an interaction map. Request an accessibility snapshot to identify structure and interaction references.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a coding agent use a screenshot to identify which button to click?
For interaction targets, request an accessibility snapshot; a screenshot shows appearance but does not provide the structured references used for acting on controls.
Can I use a hosted MCP server instead of running Playwright locally?
Yes. Capture documents a remote Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint that authenticates with a bearer token; review its integration documentation for current client setup.
