Use Playwright to capture a trading dashboard as a viewport screenshot, a single chart or panel, a full-page image, or a PDF. For reliable records, set the dashboard to the symbol, timeframe, and filters you need, wait for its content to settle, and inspect the saved file. A capture records what the browser rendered at that moment; it does not verify that market data is accurate or current.
Choose what to capture
Pick the scope before writing code. A viewport image shows only what fits in the selected browser window. An element screenshot isolates a chart or other panel. A full-page screenshot covers the page’s scrollable content. A PDF is suited to a printable or shareable report, but its appearance depends on print or screen styling.

Prepare a stable dashboard view
Trading dashboards can update while a capture is in progress. The application’s behavior determines when charts and data are ready; Playwright’s general documentation does not prescribe a universal chart-ready signal. Before capturing, select the symbol, timeframe, and filters you intend to record, then wait for the dashboard-specific loading or update indicator to finish. If you automate the wait, prefer an application selector or state that means the relevant chart is ready rather than relying only on a fixed delay.
- Use a controlled browser context and the intended viewport dimensions.
- Authenticate only through an approved, secure flow. Do not put passwords, access tokens, or other secrets in source code or screenshots.
- Keep the dashboard state reproducible where possible: note the selected symbol, timeframe, filters, and capture time outside the image if needed.
- Review the output. A screenshot shows the rendered interface, not independent proof of data accuracy, completeness, or timeliness.
Capture a dashboard with Playwright
The following JavaScript example uses Playwright’s Page API. Install Playwright and its browser in your project using the official setup instructions, then save this as an ES module such as capture.mjs. Replace the example URL and CSS selector with values for your dashboard. The page’s authentication and chart readiness are application-specific.

Viewport and element images
Call page.screenshot() for the current viewport. To capture one chart, call screenshot() on a locator for that chart, as in the commented example. A selector should identify the intended panel uniquely; if the dashboard redraws or replaces that element, wait for the final element state before capturing.
Full-page images and pixel scaling
Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. Set the browser context’s deviceScaleFactor according to the output’s intended pixel density: CSS-pixel output is smaller, while a higher device scale produces more pixels for the same CSS dimensions. Check the screenshots guide for the documented format and scaling options, and verify that the resulting image remains legible at the size where it will be viewed.

PDF styling and page setup
page.pdf() generates a PDF using print CSS media by default. If the dashboard’s screen layout is what you need, call page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before generating the PDF. Test the target page’s print styles and paper dimensions: a dashboard designed for a wide screen may split charts or columns when laid out on standard portrait pages. Playwright’s documented PDF options include page sizing and background printing; consult the Page API for the available options.

Playwright also documents screenshot and PDF commands in its CLI. These can be convenient for straightforward captures, but a trading dashboard that requires a login, a custom readiness condition, or a specific dashboard state may need browser automation code instead. Troubleshooting
The screenshot is blank or the chart is missing
The page may have been captured before the dashboard finished rendering, or the selector may not match the chart. Wait for an application-specific ready state, confirm that the chart is visible in the browser, and check the selector against the live page. A generic navigation event does not prove that a JavaScript chart has completed its data load.

PDF generation uses print media by default, so print styles may hide or rearrange dashboard elements. If screen styling is required, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf(). Also check page size, orientation, margins, and whether background graphics should be printed.
A full-page capture is too large or hard to read
Full-page mode includes content below the fold in a tall image. Capture a single chart element or use a viewport capture when a single readable frame matters. For a PDF, adjust the page layout and review whether charts are split across pages.

The dashboard requires authentication
Authentication is specific to the application. Use its supported sign-in flow and an appropriately protected browser context; avoid embedding credentials in code or logs. The official Playwright material cited here does not establish a universal method for authenticating to financial dashboards, so validate the approach with the application owner and your organization’s security requirements.
Performance, reliability, and recordkeeping
Capture cost and reliability depend on the dashboard and the chosen workflow. Waiting for the whole network to become idle can be unsuitable for pages with persistent live connections; a dashboard-specific ready selector is usually a clearer signal when available. Full-page images take more space and can make small chart labels difficult to read, while element captures reduce unrelated page content. For reproducibility, record the capture time and the dashboard settings that matter, and inspect the artifact before sharing or relying on it. Neither an image nor a PDF establishes that the underlying financial information was correct at capture time.
