Broadcasters and streaming services are adapting by distributing more programming online and working with online talent. For creators, that creates opportunities in discovery, audience support, sponsorships, and production partnerships—but market growth does not guarantee reliable income for an individual channel.
What is changing about media?
Live events give audiences a reason to show up together
A live stream offers more than a video to watch later: the event is happening now, and viewers can share reactions as it unfolds. Sports, gaming, and creator conversations can turn viewing into a collective occasion. In a 2025 survey, Amagi reported that 67% of surveyed U.S. viewers watched live events on free or paid streaming platforms, and 70% watched live content daily or weekly. Separately, 47% said a free live event could encourage them to try a paid service. These are survey responses, not a guarantee that any particular event will attract viewers or convert them to subscribers. Amagi’s 2025 findings also report that 84% of live events managed by the company in Q1 2025 were sports; that figure describes Amagi’s own managed events, not all live or free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) programming.
Creators have become discovery intermediaries
Some viewers find games and entertainment through a creator they follow rather than through a studio or broadcaster’s own channel. In Deloitte’s 2024 Digital Media Trends analysis, 63% of surveyed Gen Z gamers said they discovered new games through social creators and live-streamers; 56% said they were more likely to trust a game publisher when a favorite creator promoted it. Those findings concern surveyed Gen Z gamers and games—they should not be generalized to all audiences or categories. They do illustrate why a creator’s community can matter to companies seeking discovery and trust.
Distribution is spreading across platforms
Traditional media organizations are not only competing with online creators; they are also adapting their distribution and talent strategies. Ofcom’s 2025 report describes UK broadcasters placing full-length and digital-first programming on YouTube, including genre channels, to reach people who may not use traditional broadcasts or broadcaster video-on-demand services. It also describes subscription services working with prominent creators on larger productions. These are UK examples, not evidence that every broadcaster or creator market follows the same pattern. Ofcom’s online-content reporting provides the UK context.

How large is live streaming—and what do the numbers mean?
Stream Hatchet reported 32.5 billion hours watched across the live-streaming categories covered by its 2024 measurement, up 12% year over year. Its 2025 report attributed shares of that measured activity as follows: Twitch 61%, YouTube Gaming 22.9%, and Kick 5.7%. These are Stream Hatchet’s estimates within its measurement and category definitions, not a universal breakdown of every live stream, service, or kind of online video. The report also counted 16 million Twitch subscriptions purchased monthly in 2024. That shows substantial platform activity; it does not establish a typical creator’s earnings or the number of subscriptions any individual can expect. Stream Hatchet and its parent company, GameSquare, present these figures as market analytics.
How creators make money from live streaming
For many creators, streaming is one part of a revenue portfolio rather than a single dependable paycheck. Different sources serve different audiences and formats, and availability and terms can vary by platform and country.
Subscriptions and memberships
Recurring paid support can give viewers access to community benefits or simply provide a way to support a creator. The creator must decide what benefits are practical to deliver consistently; the platform’s eligibility rules and terms also matter. Stream Hatchet’s reported Twitch subscription activity reflects purchases across the platform, not creator-level income.

Gifts and viewer support
Virtual gifts can let viewers show appreciation or participate in a stream. In an Ipsos and TikTok 2025 report, 85% of surveyed social-media users said they were aware of livestream gifting. Among TikTok LIVE users who had activated gifts, 35% said appreciation was their main reason. These respondent findings describe awareness and stated motivation, not a forecast of gift revenue for a creator. TikTok also estimated that more than 60,000 U.S. creators received rewards above the median part-time monthly income in 2025; that is a platform estimate reported by Ipsos, not an independently audited outcome or a typical-creator benchmark. Ipsos’s report on livestream gifting gives the survey context.
Advertising and sponsorships
Advertising revenue share and brand partnerships can complement audience support, but they depend on platform arrangements, audience fit, and advertiser demand. Epidemic Sound’s March 2024 Pollfish survey of 1,500 creators already monetizing their work found that 48.3% reported ad-revenue share and 44% reported sponsorships as monetization methods. The results describe that monetizing-creator sample, not all creators, and do not compare payout rates or establish what any one creator will earn. Epidemic Sound’s 2024 creator survey reports multiple methods rather than one universally best route.
Partnerships and larger productions
A creator’s audience and identity can be valuable beyond a live channel. Companies may work with creators to reach communities, while creators may find opportunities to appear in or develop larger productions. Ofcom’s UK examples show this movement in both directions, but they do not show how common such deals are or establish typical earnings.

What the opportunity means for creators in practice
Design for participation, not just duration
A long broadcast is not automatically engaging. Decide what viewers can do: ask questions, react to a shared moment, contribute to a conversation, or support the channel. Clear, manageable ways to participate can help a stream feel like an event without promising that interaction will turn into income.
Match revenue methods to the community
Consider what your audience is likely to value and what you can sustain. Recurring benefits require ongoing delivery; sponsorships need a credible fit between brand and audience; gifts and subscriptions depend on platform availability and audience willingness. Epidemic Sound’s survey found that 49.5% of its 1,500 surveyed monetizing creators reported live streaming as a monetization method, alongside ad-revenue share (48.3%), sponsorships (44%), and paid subscriptions (42.6%). Respondents could report different methods; the figures are not mutually exclusive shares of income or a forecast for new creators.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuild more than one discovery route
Platforms can introduce a creator to new viewers, but reach is not fully under the creator’s control. In the Epidemic Sound survey, 58.3% of respondents reported recent monetization difficulties. Among reported challenges, 53.6% cited limited reach or audience, 44.8% inconsistent income, 39.3% difficulty finding brand partners, and 37.6% platform algorithm changes. These are reported difficulties within the surveyed sample. Where rights and platform rules allow, plan how live material might support other formats, and cultivate durable audience relationships rather than relying entirely on one recommendation system.

Handle music and other rights deliberately
Epidemic Sound’s surveyed creators reported copyright-related muting, removal, or demonetization among the challenges they encountered. Before using music, clips, or other third-party material, check that you have the necessary rights for the platform and intended use. Platform rules and licenses differ, and a track being available in one context does not necessarily authorize its use everywhere. No single music service is established as a requirement for creators.
Separate industry growth from personal prospects
More viewing, brand interest, or distribution opportunities at the market level do not show that a particular channel will become profitable. The sources here do not establish that live streaming reliably creates sustainable income, that more equipment improves audience reach, or that one platform is best for every creator. Choose a format and investment based on your content, audience, production needs, and budget—not on headline growth figures alone.

- Audience fit and discovery: Identify where the communities for your topic already gather and how new viewers might find a stream.
- Revenue mechanism: Distinguish ads, subscriptions, gifts, and sponsorships, and check current eligibility and terms rather than treating reported platform activity as guaranteed income.
- Community expectations: Choose benefits and participation methods you can deliver reliably.
- Distribution resilience: Think about how dependent your reach is on one platform and what audience relationships you can maintain outside its recommendation system.
- Production and rights: Account for the workflow required by your format and the permissions needed for music, footage, and reused content.
- Geography and changing rules: Platform availability, monetization eligibility, fees, and policies may differ by country and can change.
The cited market and survey reports do not provide a current, apples-to-apples comparison of payout rates, eligibility thresholds, fees, or audience demographics across Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Kick. Check each platform’s current official terms before making a decision.

When a 24/7 YouTube stream fits a creator plan
A continuously looping stream can suit a library of videos intended to play around the clock, such as a music or ambient-video channel. It is a different format from going live on camera: scheduled presence, interaction, rights, and the viewer experience still need attention. A 24/7 stream is not a shortcut to discovery or dependable income. If you choose to run one, make sure the videos and audio are rights-cleared and that the stream adds value for viewers rather than simply repeating content without a clear purpose.
Or let it run in the cloud
