Choose and test the destination, add a clear prompt such as “Scan to watch live,” and place the code where people can scan it easily. Treat it as one convenient route into your promotion—not a guaranteed way to gain viewers.
Choose where the QR code should send people
Decide what a scan should open before you generate or publish the code. YouTube recommends sharing the stream link ahead of time and embedding it on a website; when you have a specific upcoming stream page, that is usually the clearest destination for an event-specific promotion. YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance also recommends sharing the link at least 48 hours before going live.
- Upcoming event or stream page: Use this when you want people to find one scheduled broadcast. Confirm that the page is accessible before the event.
- Creator or channel page: Use this when the code will stay up after the current event or you want to direct people to a persistent home for your streams.
- Event information page: Use this if attendees need timing or other event details before deciding to watch. Make the call to action say what they will find.
Open the final URL on a phone before printing or sharing the QR code. Check that it leads to the intended destination and that the page works without requiring an unexpected sign-in. If you use a redirect, verify its destination too; the choice between a direct link and a redirect depends on your needs, and available guidance does not establish one as more reliable.
Generate the code and make its purpose obvious
- Copy the destination URL. Use the exact page you tested, rather than typing a similar-looking address by hand.
- Create a QR code for that URL. Keep an original, high-quality or vector version for print where possible.
- Add a plain-language call to action. For example, write “Scan to watch live” for a live page or “Scan for event details” for an information page. Do not put text over the code or inside the clear margin around it.
- Test the finished design. Scan the actual exported or printed version with a phone, at the expected distance and in realistic lighting. Confirm the destination again after any URL or design changes.
Make the QR code easy to scan
There is no single minimum printed size that works in every situation. The payload, printing method, surface, lighting, and distance all affect readability. A small code on a handout and a large code on a sign viewed from across a room have different needs, so test the final design in context rather than assuming a generic size will work.

Preserve contrast and clear space
Use strong contrast between the dark modules and light background, and leave an unobstructed margin around all four sides. GS1 UK states: “The Quiet Zone around all four sides of the QR code is four times the size of the X-Dimension.” The X-dimension is the size of the smallest squares inside the code. Keep prompts such as “scan me” outside this quiet zone. GS1 UK’s QR design guidelines provide the quiet-zone guidance.
Match size and placement to the scan
For print, avoid stretching, cropping, covering, or placing the code on a visually busy background. A QR print guide recommends vector artwork for print and stresses that the necessary size depends on the scanning conditions. Fair-QR’s print guidance was reviewed July 17, 2026; treat it as practical secondary guidance, not a universal size standard. Test a proof at the intended viewing distance before distributing stickers, flyers, or signage.

Put the code where the audience can use it
Match placement to the moment someone is likely to scan. In person, flyers, stickers, and signs can give attendees a route to an event page or channel. Online, include a code only where it is visible and scannable in the viewer’s situation; do not assume someone can scan a code displayed on the same device they are using to watch.
- Use a short prompt that names the outcome: watch the stream, find the schedule, or get event details.
- Keep the code large and clear enough for the expected distance, with good lighting and an uninterrupted quiet zone.
- Check platform rules before placing a code in a channel, stream, or platform profile—particularly if it sends viewers to another live service.
Pair the code with platform promotion
A QR code is a way to present a link; it does not replace telling people when and where the stream is happening. YouTube recommends sharing the stream link at least 48 hours ahead, connecting social accounts, embedding the URL on a website, creating a Live section, and using a teaser or trailer. It also recommends highlighting clips during a stream and making eligible public archives or highlights public. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee of discovery or attendance. Other platforms have their own sharing tools and constraints:
- Twitch: Twitch’s Share feature can distribute links to live channels, past broadcasts, and clips, and Twitch supports embedding video or chat on a website. Its rules prohibit using Twitch to direct viewers to a concurrent live stream on another service, explicitly including QR codes that send viewers there. A link that simply notes your presence elsewhere is different from actively directing viewers away to a concurrent broadcast. Check the Twitch sharing help and Twitch Community Guidelines before placing a code on Twitch.
- TikTok LIVE: TikTok’s LIVE Studio guidance says creators can share a LIVE after starting it and add LIVE information to social platforms. Its promotion guidance recommends sharing schedules, clips, and events. These suggestions do not establish that a QR code will increase discovery. Twitch said in a June 17, 2026 post that “70% of new viewers are coming to Twitch on mobile.” That is Twitch’s own statement, and the cited post excerpt does not explain its measurement method. Measure your own campaign without assuming a lift
Available guidance does not establish a QR-specific increase in viewers, a scan-to-view conversion benchmark, or whether one placement performs better than another. If you have measurement tools available, record scans and compare them with event attendance or stream arrivals for your own campaign. Note the destination, placement, and promotion timing so you can make a more informed choice next time; do not treat an observed result from one event as a predictable outcome for another.
