To stream a prerecorded lecture as a scheduled YouTube Live event with StreamYard, create a live stream, choose Pre-recorded video, upload an MP4 with H.264 video or select a past StreamYard broadcast, then choose YouTube and schedule the event. The video starts automatically at the selected time and the broadcast ends when playback finishes.
Before you schedule: check the video and channel
- Video: StreamYard documents MP4 files with H.264 video encoding, a maximum bitrate of 10 Mbps (10,000 Kbps), and paid-plan output up to 1080p. If an upload fails or the prerecorded stream lags, its guide recommends re-encoding the file with HandBrake. StreamYard’s prerecorded-video guide lists the operational limits.
- YouTube: Live streaming must already be enabled on the channel you want to use. See StreamYard’s YouTube scheduling guide.
- Plan capacity: Confirm your account’s upload size, video duration, and simultaneous scheduled-stream limits before building the event. Limits vary by plan and can change.
This workflow uses an uploaded recording or a past StreamYard broadcast; it does not require a camera, microphone, capture card, or external drive to stream the lecture.
Schedule the lecture in StreamYard
- Open the prerecorded-stream creator: From StreamYard Home, select Create > Live Stream > Pre-recorded video.
- Choose the source: Upload the lecture file from your computer, or select a past StreamYard recording. If using a file, check that it meets the format, bitrate, size, and duration limits for your plan.
- Select the YouTube destination: Choose the YouTube channel with live streaming enabled.
- Enter event details: Add the title and description, set privacy, and choose the date and time. You can also upload a thumbnail; StreamYard’s scheduling guide says YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels.
- Choose announcement timing: Decide whether to schedule an announcement post. It controls when the shareable YouTube watch link becomes available. Make this choice now: StreamYard says the announcement timing cannot be added or changed after the broadcast is created.
- Create the broadcast: Select Create broadcast. From Home, use Check status to see whether it is live and open the broadcast after it starts.
Plan limits to check
StreamYard’s help guide lists the following plan-dependent limits. Check the current limits for your account before relying on them; the help pages do not state a publication date for these figures.

The guide also states a 10 Mbps maximum bitrate and specifies MP4 with H.264 video. Those format and bitrate requirements are not additional plan tiers.

When viewers can get the YouTube link
If you schedule an announcement post, the watch link becomes available at the announcement’s scheduled time. Without an announcement, the link appears on the destination when the prerecorded stream goes live. If you already created the broadcast without an announcement and need the link sooner, StreamYard says to delete and recreate the broadcast with the desired announcement time.
What viewers and hosts can do during playback
The video plays automatically; it is not a controllable live studio session. StreamYard says you cannot control overlays or other media assets during prerecorded playback, and comments cannot be displayed on the stream. Viewers can still use YouTube chat, so a host can participate there separately, but should not promise on-screen comment display, live Q&A integration, or production changes during the lecture. YouTube Live supports real-time chat as a platform feature; that does not make the prerecorded playback controllable.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The file will not upload: Check that it is an MP4 with H.264 video, is no more than 10 Mbps, and stays within your plan’s upload-size and duration limits. If it still fails, try re-encoding with HandBrake.
- The video lags during playback: StreamYard recommends re-encoding with HandBrake if a prerecorded stream lags. Recheck the bitrate ceiling and the exported file.
- The YouTube channel is missing: Verify that live streaming is enabled for that channel, then return to the destination selector.
- The audience cannot access the link ahead of time: Check whether an announcement was scheduled. If the broadcast was created without one, recreate it with the intended announcement timing.
- You expected to show comments or change overlays: Those controls are unavailable during automated prerecorded playback. Use YouTube chat separately if you want to interact with viewers.
