Yes. OBS Studio is a capable free option for recording YouTube videos to a local file, either on its own or while you stream. It gives you control over video, audio, encoders and recording quality. The trade-off is that you must configure your sources and balance quality against file size and your computer’s capacity.
When OBS is a good fit
OBS makes sense if you want to capture your screen, camera, microphone or other configured sources and are comfortable setting up a scene before recording. Its official documentation describes local recording as a core use, alongside live broadcasting. You can record solely for offline use or record while streaming. - Good fit: You want control over what is captured, recording quality, encoder and audio tracks, and can spend time checking your setup.
- Potential drawback: More demanding quality settings can create large files and use more system resources. Older or weaker computers may struggle, depending on the encoder and what else is running.
- Not a guarantee: OBS does not ensure a particular visual result. The outcome depends on your source quality, settings, hardware and recording workflow.
OBS provides microphone and auxiliary-audio inputs, but you do not need to buy an external microphone just to use it. An external mic is useful if you need better voice capture than your current equipment provides.
Choose recording quality without overwhelming your computer
Start with Simple output mode
OBS recommends Simple output mode for people who do not need detailed controls. Its recording-quality choices include Same as stream, High Quality, Indistinguishable Quality and Lossless. The higher-quality choices can take more storage; a separate recording encoder can also add system load. Lossless is rarely a sensible default for ordinary YouTube recordings. OBS says this preset uses the CPU encoder and estimates around 7 GB of data per minute. That figure is OBS’s published estimate, not a measurement for every recording. See the OBS Recording Encoder Presets Guide.
Use Advanced mode when you need separate controls
Advanced output mode is useful when you want recording settings independent of streaming settings or need multiple audio tracks. OBS publishes starting-point constant-quality ranges for available encoder families, including NVENC, x264, AMD and QuickSync. Those are encoder-specific starting points, not universal values: the available choices depend on your hardware and OBS setup. In the guide’s constant-quality ranges, a lower value means higher quality and a larger file. Consult the OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide for the range that matches your encoder rather than copying settings meant for another one.

Whichever mode you choose, make a short test with representative content before an important recording. Check the result in your intended editor, listen to the audio and confirm that your computer remains responsive. A static slide, fast gameplay and a screen recording with small text place different demands on capture and encoding.
Choose a recording format that fits your editing workflow
For many local recordings, OBS recommends MKV because an unexpected interruption is less likely to leave the entire recording unusable. MKV may, however, be less compatible with some editing applications. OBS’s built-in Remux Recordings function can convert a completed MKV recording into another container when your editor or destination prefers one.

The OBS formats guide also covers hybrid and fragmented MP4/MOV variants, which aim to combine some resilience from fragmented writing with broader editing compatibility. Compatibility depends on the editor and codec combination, so check the target workflow before settling on a format. There is no single best container for every creator. Prepare the finished file for YouTube
YouTube’s upload recommendations are separate from OBS’s local recording controls. For uploads, YouTube recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan and keeping the frame rate the same as the original recording. Its listed audio codec options include AAC-LC, Opus or Eclipsa Audio at a 48 kHz sample rate. Check YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the full guidance.

These are YouTube upload recommendations for SDR video, not required OBS recording bitrates. YouTube says the player uses a standard 16:9 aspect ratio for computer viewing but adapts to other aspect ratios. See its video resolution and aspect ratio guidance.
Common recording problems and what to check
- The recording is much larger than expected: Check the selected quality preset and encoder settings. Lossless is particularly storage-intensive; OBS’s estimate is around 7 GB per minute.
- The computer slows down during recording: Reduce the recording quality or choose an encoder supported by your hardware, then test again. Separate recording encoders may use additional resources.
- The file will not open in your editor: Check whether the editor supports the recording’s container and codec. If you recorded MKV, try OBS’s Remux Recordings function to make a compatible container.
- An interrupted recording is not usable: OBS recommends MKV for many uses because it is more resilient to an unexpected interruption than a recording that has not been finalized. For future sessions, consider MKV or an appropriate hybrid/fragmented format after checking editor compatibility.
- The uploaded video looks different from the local file: Confirm that your upload uses a YouTube-compatible format and encoding, and allow for YouTube’s processing. Keep the uploaded frame rate aligned with the recording rather than treating the upload bitrate recommendation as an OBS capture setting.
