Turn on 2-Step Verification (preferably with a passkey), keep account-recovery options current, and reset the stream key in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed. For a broadcast meant only for invited viewers, choose Private—not Unlisted, which anyone with the link can watch.
Secure the Google Account behind your channel
A YouTube channel is tied to at least one Google Account. If that account is compromised, protect or recover it first; securing only the stream key will not address an account takeover. Apply these safeguards to every account that can manage the channel.
Turn on 2-Step Verification
YouTube recommends a passkey as its strongest phishing-protection option. A physical security key is another strong option. Google Prompts and Authenticator codes are alternatives; YouTube identifies text or phone codes and downloaded backup codes as less secure. Choose a method you can reliably use, and keep a recovery route available. YouTube’s channel security guidance explains its recommendations.
Keep recovery and device access current
- Use a strong, unique password and add a recovery email and phone number you can access.
- Review signed-in devices and connected apps in your Google Account. Remove unfamiliar devices and apps you no longer need.
- Use antivirus software and safer browsing practices. YouTube recommends Chrome Enhanced Safe Browsing; it also warns that encrypted downloads can evade some antivirus scans, so scanning alone is not a guarantee.
Be cautious with sponsorship files and messages
Creator-targeted phishing can arrive as a sponsorship or brand-deal offer. Verify an offer through a contact method you already trust before opening its links or files, especially password-protected archives and executable downloads. YouTube says legitimate emails from it use an @youtube.com or @google.com address, and that it will not ask for your password by email, message, or phone call. Give collaborators access without sharing your login
Do not share your Google password or sign-in details to delegate channel work. Use YouTube channel permissions, or Brand Account permissions where applicable, and give each person the least powerful role that lets them do their job. Available channel roles include Manager, Editor, Editor (limited), Viewer, and Viewer (limited); their capabilities differ, so check YouTube’s current role descriptions before assigning one.
- Remove people who leave the team and anyone you do not recognize.
- Review connected apps and remove access that is no longer needed.
- Ask every authorized user to secure their own Google Account with 2-Step Verification and current recovery options.

Protect the stream key and reset it if exposed
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it in the intended encoder; do not place it in shared documents or expose it in screenshots, screen recordings, or public support posts. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains what a key does and how to manage it.
Reset a potentially compromised key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Choose Stream and locate Stream key.
- Select Reset. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset.
- Replace the old key in the encoder with the newly generated key before sending the feed again. Do not continue using a key you believe has leaked.
If a third-party encoder or another authorized person also stores the old key, update that configuration as well. A reset invalidates the exposed credential; it does not secure a Google Account that has been taken over.

Choose the right audience setting
| Visibility | Who can watch | Use it when |

| Public | The broadcast is intended for general viewing. | You want people to find and watch it publicly. |
| Unlisted | Anyone who obtains the link can watch; the link can be forwarded. | Link-based access is acceptable and you can control how the link is shared. |
| Private | Limited to invited viewers. | The broadcast should be restricted to people you invite. |
Set visibility before going live and review it again when checking the stream archive. Unlisted is not private access control. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the distinction between invited viewers and people with a link.
What to do if your channel or stream looks compromised
Act promptly if you see activity you did not authorize: unfamiliar uploads, changed channel details or privacy settings, unexpected links in descriptions or pinned comments, or unknown managers. YouTube’s hacked-channel guidance recommends recovering the associated Google Account first, then reviewing and cleaning up the channel.

- Recover and secure the Google Account. If you are locked out, use Google Account recovery. Set a new password that you have not used before, turn on 2-Step Verification, and check recovery options and signed-in devices. Ask other channel managers to secure their accounts too.
- Reset the stream key if it may be exposed. Follow the reset steps above and update the encoder with the new key.
- Undo unauthorized channel activity. Remove uploads you did not make and restore channel details or privacy settings that were changed without permission.
- Review the rest of the channel. Check recent comments, playlists, thumbnails, subscriptions, and links in descriptions or pinned comments. Review associated AdSense or Content Manager settings where relevant.
- Remove unwanted access. Check channel permissions and connected apps; remove unfamiliar users and app access you do not need.
- Contact Creator Support if eligible. YouTube’s recovery guidance says support is limited to potential hacking incidents within the past nine months under its stated data-retention policy. Check the current guidance for eligibility and available support.

- The encoder stops connecting after you reset the key: Update the encoder’s saved stream key with the newly generated one, then retry the connection.
- A stream set to Unlisted is being watched by unintended people: Anyone who gets the link can watch. Change visibility to Private and invite the intended viewers.
- You still see unfamiliar activity after changing the key: A key reset does not recover or secure a compromised Google Account. Recover the account, change its password, review devices and apps, and remove unauthorized channel access.
- A former collaborator may still have access: Review channel permissions and remove that person. Do not rely on changing a shared password as a substitute for individual channel permissions.
