The right first mower depends on your lawn, not a universal “best” ranking. For a small, fairly flat yard, a push mower may be simpler and less costly; for a larger or hilly lawn, self-propulsion can reduce effort. This shortlist of 11 walk-behind models uses model data from Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide, with additional battery-mower context from Popular Mechanics’ September 18, 2026 guide. Neither source tests a special “beginner” category, and these are candidates organized by use case—not products tested here.
Choose for your lawn before choosing a model
Before comparing brands, estimate the area you mow and consider the slope, obstacles, storage space, physical effort you can comfortably supply, maintenance you are willing to do, and your budget. Trees and narrow turns can make a wide deck awkward even when the lawn’s total area seems manageable.
A push mower relies on you to move it forward. Lowe’s describes push models as economical, lighter, and lower-maintenance, and says self-propelled models can suit lawns over about half an acre or hilly terrain. Briggs & Stratton gives a narrower rule of thumb: push mowers for flat lawns under one-quarter acre and self-propelled mowers for yards up to three-quarters of an acre. These are broad guides, not hard limits; slope, grass, yard shape, and operator strength all matter. Lowe’s mower guide and Briggs & Stratton’s buying guide explain the trade-offs.
A self-propelled mower drives itself while you steer. It can make hills or larger lawns less tiring, but the drive system can add weight and cost. Front-wheel drive can help when turning around obstacles; Briggs & Stratton identifies rear-wheel drive as providing better traction on hills. Battery models avoid fuel handling and generally need less routine engine maintenance, but you should match battery capacity and runtime to your lawn and account for charging time, spare-battery cost, and compatibility with tools you already own. Gas models let you continue mowing without waiting to recharge, but require the manufacturer-specified fuel and engine care such as oil, spark-plug, and filter maintenance. Corded electric and manual reel mowers remain options for small, flat areas; cords restrict range, while reel mowers require more effort and can struggle with tall grass and weeds.

11 walk-behind mowers to compare
Consumer Reports lists the following models in its 2026 buying guide. The scores, approximate prices, and specifications below are that publication’s figures, not independent ratings or prices from this article. Consumer Reports says its experts cut 500,000 square feet of grass each year during testing; that reported workload does not establish which mower will suit your lawn. A higher overall score also does not automatically mean an easier or better fit for a beginner. Check current stock, price, exact suffix, included battery and charger, warranty, and local service before buying. Consumer Reports’ 2026 lawn mower buying guide.

Battery alternatives highlighted by another guide
Popular Mechanics’ September 18, 2026 battery-mower guide names the EGO Power+ 56V 21-inch Select Cut XP its best overall, the Ryobi 40V HP 21-inch its best value, the Greenworks 80V 22-inch self-propelled its gas-mower replacement, and the Greenworks 40V 16-inch its choice for yards under 0.15 acres. Those are Popular Mechanics’ categories and conclusions, not a separate beginner ranking.

- 14-INCH CUTTING WIDTH – Five heat-treated alloy-steel blades provide a scissor-action cut, while 10-inch polymer wheels support maneuverability around smaller lawn areas.
- ADJUSTABLE CUTTING HEIGHT – Adjust the cutting height from 1 to 2.25 inches; verify the maximum height against current product specifications before publishing.
- GRASS CATCHER INCLUDED – Includes a grass catcher for collecting clippings; attach it securely and empty it regularly during mowing.
- MANUAL OPERATION – Requires no gas, oil, batteries or charging and operates without gas-engine exhaust.
- RECOMMENDED LAWN CONDITIONS – Designed for small, relatively level and regularly maintained lawns; remove sticks and mulch before mowing, and expect additional passes through tall, thick or weedy areas.
The publication says the Ryobi configuration it reviewed was easy to operate and included two 6Ah batteries. It also reports that the Greenworks 80V was heavy to maneuver when self-propulsion was disengaged. These details can help frame what to look for, but configurations and stock can change; check the guide’s model links and current notes before relying on them. Popular Mechanics’ battery mower guide.
Compare ownership details, not just voltage or scores
- Effort and terrain: Check whether a model is push or self-propelled, its drive-wheel layout, and whether the added drive system suits your slopes and obstacles.
- Lawn fit: Compare deck width and any published coverage or runtime claims with your lawn. Narrow passages, trees, and tight turns can matter more than total area alone.
- Starting and controls: Battery models avoid recoil starting; gas models may use recoil or other starting systems depending on configuration. Check drive-speed controls and how easily you can adjust cutting height.
- Clippings: Verify whether the mower supports mulching, bagging, side discharge, or leaf shredding, and which accessories come in the box versus being sold separately.
- Battery and charging: Compare the included battery and charger, charge time, spare-battery price, and compatibility with your existing tools. Voltage by itself is not a reliable measure of the value or suitability of a kit.
- Handling and storage: Look for mower and battery weight, folding or upright storage, and whether the deck can fit through gates and into your storage area.
- Service and warranty: Verify terms for the exact model and bundle, plus access to parts or dealer service in your area.
Manufacturer lineups illustrate why the exact model matters. Honda’s US listings include battery HRN-BV and HRX-BV self-propelled models as well as gas HRN push and self-propelled variants, with differences in clipping modes, battery-and-charger bundles, and some electric-start options. Displayed prices are manufacturer suggested retail prices and may change. Honda’s lineup is useful context, but those models are not part of the 11-model shortlist above. - 4-blade reel mower with a cutting width of 14” and durable 8.5” polymer wheels for maximum maneuverability. Lightweight at only 19 pounds. Reel Lawn Mowers are great for small lawns..Deluxe hand-reel mower ideal for most turf grasses.
- This push lawn mower has an adjustable blade height of 0.5”-1.75”. Capable of cutting grass up to 4 inches tall and is less effective on taller grass.
- Manual grass cutter is environment-friendly alternative to other lawn mowers. This push mower is pollution-free, noise-free, low maintenance, lightweight and easy to use.
- A reel mower uses a cutting action that does not bruise or damage the blades of grass. For best results using a reel push mower, mow no more than 1/3 of the grass blade, so that the roots stay intact.
- Increase the amount of overlap while using your push mower if your lawn reaches a height of 4 inches or more. It’s better to mow smaller amounts more frequently than it is to let the grass get long. Try not reel mower when the grass is wet.
First-use safety and care
Before mowing: Read the operator’s manual for the exact model. Wear eye protection, mow in daylight when the grass is dry, clear toys and debris, keep children and pets away, keep all wheels on the ground, and take care on slopes. Briggs & Stratton’s safety guidance.
Battery power does not eliminate care: the deck still needs cleaning and the blade needs attention. Gas models also require routine engine maintenance. Follow the exact operator manual for procedures and service intervals rather than applying a generic schedule. Lowe’s mower guide and Popular Mechanics’ battery mower guide.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Small push lawn mower with 4-blade reel and 14" cutting width; 8.5" polymer wheels provide optimal maneuverability
- Manual push reel mower with an adjustable blade height of 0.5”-1.75” with scissor-action cut
- A reel mower uses a cutting action that does not bruise or damage the blades of grass. For best results from Scotts push mower, mow no more than 1/3 of the grass blade, so that deeper roots are encouraged. Increase the amount of overlap while using your push mower if your lawn reaches a height of 4 inches or more. Try not reel mower when the grass is wet. It usually produces a very uneven cut.
- Maintenance Push Mower: When using a reel mower, tall grass means more work. It’s better to mow smaller amounts more frequently than it is to let the grass get long. A push mower only cuts what gets between the reel and the cutter bar. Ensure a proper cut by not allowing your lawn to reach a height of much over 3-4 inches.
- Before using your reel lawn mower, make sure to collect and remove any lawn debris before mowing. Reel mowers work best on maintained lawns. If your lawn is overgrown with divots and tall weeds it is recommended to have the lawn worked on before using a reel lawn mower or it will take multiple passes the first time using a reel mower
