If a prerecorded StreamYard broadcast lags or freezes, check the video file first: StreamYard recommends re-encoding it with HandBrake. Its guidance for prerecorded uploads calls for MP4 with H.264 video, a maximum bitrate of 10 Mbps, and—when re-encoding—Web Optimized and Align A/V Start. A shaky internet connection can affect uploading, but it is not a fix for an encoding problem in a video that has already uploaded.

First identify when the problem happens

Separate two symptoms before changing settings:

  • The upload is slow, fails, or stalls: focus on the connection between your computer and StreamYard, as well as file size and plan limits.
  • The scheduled broadcast lags or freezes after upload: focus on the source file’s format, bitrate, and encoding. StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream FAQ addresses this symptom as “Why is my pre-recorded stream lagging?” and recommends re-encoding with HandBrake.

These are different stages. A better upload connection can help transfer a file, but it does not alter the file’s encoding after upload.

Check the video against StreamYard’s prerecorded-upload guidance

StreamYard Help Center guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these requirements for prerecorded streams. Help-page publication dates were not available, so confirm the current limits in StreamYard before preparing a large or long video.

Setting or limit Guidance
Container MP4
Video encoding H.264
Maximum bitrate 10 Mbps
File-size limit Core and Advanced: 10 GB; Teams and Business: 25 GB
Video-duration limit Core: 2 hours; Advanced: 4 hours; Teams and Business: 8 hours

The 10 Mbps cap is a prerecorded-upload limit, not a recommended internet upload speed. If your source exceeds it, StreamYard’s optimization guidance says to reduce the bitrate; doing so may prevent lagging or freezing. Plan limits can change, so check the current limits for your account if the file is near the size or duration ceiling.

Re-encode the source video with HandBrake

StreamYard’s optimization instructions recommend HandBrake settings that produce an MP4, align audio and video start, and enable Web Optimized (also called fast-start). Use the steps as a practical conversion path; exact control placement can vary by HandBrake version.

  1. Open the original video in HandBrake. Select the source file and choose an MP4 output. Keep a copy of the original so you can retry with different settings if needed.
  2. Choose H.264 video encoding. Confirm that the video encoder is H.264 (x264) and set the output bitrate to no more than 10 Mbps. If the source is already at or below the cap, avoid raising its bitrate during conversion.
  3. Enable Web Optimized. This places the file structure for faster web playback, as recommended by StreamYard’s optimization guide.
  4. Align audio and video start. Enable the Align A/V Start option in the optimization steps so audio and video begin in alignment.
  5. Encode and review the resulting file. Check that the output is an MP4 and that audio and video play together. Then upload that converted file to StreamYard and confirm it is within your plan’s size and duration limits.

Re-encoding is a compatibility and bitrate remedy, not a guarantee against every playback interruption. If a compliant re-encoded file still lags during the broadcast, note whether the issue affects the whole file or a particular point, then check StreamYard’s current support guidance and the source file itself.

When the upload itself is the problem

For a failed or very slow upload, look at network consistency and the file’s size. StreamYard recommends using Ethernet when possible for a more consistent connection; it says Wi-Fi works in most cases but may cause issues. A wired connection may help the transfer from your computer, but it will not repair an already-uploaded file’s bitrate or encoding.

StreamYard’s live-broadcast testing guidance recommends at least 5 Mbps upload speed, with 7 Mbps or higher preferred. Those figures concern live streaming and should not be treated as a bitrate setting or a guaranteed speed requirement for uploading a prerecorded file.
