To capture a mobile-width layout with Thumbalizr, set bwidth to the viewport width you want to inspect and bheight to the visible viewport height. Choose size=screen for that visible area or size=page for a full-page capture. The separate width parameter changes the output thumbnail width; it does not make the page render at a mobile viewport. Thumbalizr documents bwidth and bheight as the browser viewport dimensions (Thumbalizr API documentation).
Set the browser viewport, not just the image size
A responsive site chooses its layout from the browser viewport. For a narrow-layout screenshot, configure bwidth to the pixel width you want to test. Set bheight to the height of the visible browser area you need. These values describe viewport dimensions; they do not establish that Thumbalizr is emulating a particular phone, browser, or device profile.
There is no single width that represents every phone. Treat the width as a test point for a responsive breakpoint or target layout, rather than as a universal mobile setting. The documented general parameter range is 1–2000, but custom viewport availability depends on plan.
Choose screen or full-page capture
size=screencaptures the visible browser viewport configured bybwidthandbheight.size=pagecaptures the full page while rendering at the configured browser viewport. Full-page capture is not listed for Thumbalizr’s Free plan.
Do not use width as a substitute for bwidth: width controls the resulting thumbnail’s output width, while bwidth affects the page layout being rendered.

Check that your Thumbalizr plan supports the viewport
Thumbalizr’s published plan information is presented somewhat differently across its API documentation, demo page, and feature page. The demo summarizes Free and Silver as fixed at 1280×1024, while Gold and Platinum allow larger or custom browser dimensions. The feature page lists custom browser width of 1–2000 and height of 1–1600 for Gold, and up to 2000×2000 for Platinum. It also lists monthly quotas of 100 screenshots for Free, 2,000 for Silver, 3,000 for Gold, and 5,000 or more for Platinum. These are published plan details, not independent research statistics; confirm current entitlements on the live plan page and in your account before relying on them.

Use the Embed API
- Choose the viewport width you want to inspect and a useful viewport height.
- Confirm your account plan permits those browser dimensions and the capture type you need.
- Get the API key and secret from your Thumbalizr account. Build the Embed API URL with the encoded query parameters and a token generated using the secret, following the official API documentation.
- Set
bwidth,bheight, andsize. Addwidthonly if you also need to specify the output thumbnail width. - Inspect the response headers:
X-Thumbalizr-Statuscan beQUEUED,OK, orFAILED. If the request fails, checkX-Thumbalizr-Errorfor the reason.
The API documentation describes the required credentials, URL encoding, and token construction. Follow its current signing instructions rather than copying an example that may use different credentials or parameter values. A successful request should return the screenshot; a queued response indicates processing is not yet complete, and a failed response should be diagnosed from its error header.

- The page still looks desktop-sized: Check that you set
bwidth, not onlywidth. The latter changes thumbnail output dimensions and not the browser viewport. - The requested width is rejected or ignored: Verify your plan supports custom browser dimensions. Thumbalizr’s published pages differ in how they summarize plan limits, so confirm the entitlement in your account.
- You do not get a full-page image: Confirm you requested
size=pageand that your plan offers full-page capture; the demo lists Free as screen-only. - The response is not a finished screenshot: Read
X-Thumbalizr-Status. A value ofQUEUEDis distinct fromOK; forFAILED, inspectX-Thumbalizr-Error. - Authentication or request construction fails: Verify the API key and secret, URL-encode the target and parameter values, and follow the current Embed API token-generation steps in Thumbalizr’s documentation.
- The layout differs from a physical phone: The cited documentation establishes browser viewport dimensions, not model-specific device emulation. A width-based capture should not be treated as proof of a particular device’s complete rendering behavior.
