For an AWS-based live event, the core path is source → AWS Elemental MediaLive → AWS Elemental MediaPackage → Amazon CloudFront → player. MediaLive ingests and transcodes the feed, MediaPackage packages it for playback, and CloudFront delivers it to viewers. For a time-bounded event, AWS’s MediaLive workflow wizard can create a managed starting point; for a more configurable deployment, build the MediaPackage and CloudFront path yourself.

Which AWS services do you need?

A pop-up channel is a temporary live-video workflow, not one AWS product. The services in the reference architecture have separate roles:

  • Source: supplies the live video feed, such as an encoder or another supported input.
  • AWS Elemental MediaLive: ingests the source and transcodes it into configured outputs. A MediaLive channel must have an input and downstream destinations. AWS Elemental MediaLive overview.
  • AWS Elemental MediaPackage: receives encoder output and makes packaged video available through endpoints.
  • Amazon CloudFront: can use MediaPackage as an origin and deliver the live stream to viewers.
  • Player or website: plays the delivery URL using a format supported by the viewer’s device and player.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference architecture uses MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront, and describes HLS, DASH, and CMAF outputs. Select formats based on your actual playback requirements; the reference does not establish one format as best for every audience. Live Streaming on AWS solution overview

Choose an ingest route for the event

Start by identifying how the live feed will reach AWS. The workflow wizard supports several input paths, but support in the wizard does not by itself make every source suitable for a production event.

  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
  • MediaConnect flow: use this if your production already provides a MediaConnect flow.
  • AWS Elemental Link: use a compatible Link device as the source.
  • Phone or webcam over RTMP: the wizard supports a mobile phone or webcam using RTMP. Confirm the capture setup and network are appropriate for the event before relying on it.
  • MP4 file: the wizard can use an MP4 stored in Amazon S3 or available from an HTTP server. This is a file input, not a live camera feed.

The wizard’s supported inputs and outputs are limited to its documented choices. If your source or delivery needs do not fit those choices, use a manual configuration or another appropriate workflow. Live Streaming on AWS implementation guide

Option 1: deploy a starting workflow with the MediaLive wizard

The wizard is the lower-touch route when its supported input and output options match the event. It can create a CloudFormation stack containing a MediaLive input and channel, plus the other resources required by the selected workflow. Review the resources and configuration before the event; a generated stack is a deployment mechanism, not a substitute for validating the stream end to end.

  1. Choose the source first. Confirm its type is one of the wizard’s supported inputs and that you can provide the required feed or file.
  2. Open the MediaLive workflow wizard in the AWS console. Select the workflow that matches the source and intended output. AWS may update console labels or workflow availability, so use the current options displayed in your account.
  3. Configure the input and channel. Provide the source details requested by the selected workflow and review the channel’s output and destination settings.
  4. Create the workflow resources. The wizard can provision the selected workflow through CloudFormation. Inspect the stack’s resources and wait for deployment to complete.
  5. Validate playback. Confirm the source reaches MediaLive, the configured output reaches its destination, and the resulting stream plays on the devices and players you expect to support.

For the exact current wizard options and implementation behavior, use the AWS implementation guide.

Option 2: connect MediaLive to MediaPackage and CloudFront manually

Choose a manual route when you need to configure the packaging and delivery path directly. In the MediaPackage v2 sequence documented for this workflow, create a channel group, then a channel, then an endpoint. The channel receives encoder output; the endpoint exposes packaged content to a player or CDN.

  1. Create a MediaPackage channel group. In the AWS Elemental MediaPackage console, create the group that will contain the channel.
  2. Create a channel in that group. This is the receiving point for the output from the encoder—in this architecture, MediaLive.
  3. Create an endpoint. Choose and configure the output formats needed by your player and delivery design. AWS’s reference lists HLS, DASH, and CMAF; test each intended format with your actual player and device mix rather than assuming universal compatibility.
  4. Configure MediaLive’s output destination. Point the relevant MediaLive output at the MediaPackage channel, using the settings required for that output path.
  5. Set up CloudFront with MediaPackage as the origin. Configure the distribution and viewer-facing playback path for the endpoint. AWS documents MediaPackage as a CloudFront origin for live video. Use CloudFront for live streaming
  6. Test the full path. Verify ingest, packaging, CDN delivery, and playback from outside the AWS console before sharing the event URL.

For the manual MediaPackage v2 object sequence, see AWS Elemental MediaPackage overview.

Decide how much resilience and access control the event needs

Redundancy

AWS’s reference solution uses two input feeds, with one MediaLive processing each feed. Treat this as a more resilient reference pattern, not a requirement for every temporary channel. Whether the extra feed and processing path are justified depends on the event’s criticality and your ability to provide independent sources.

Plan event teardown and costs

AWS describes running the reference solution for an event and deleting its stack after the program. Once the event is over, stop or remove the resources you no longer need, following the deployment’s cleanup instructions. Deleting a stack is not a guarantee of a particular bill or savings: actual cost depends on the services, configuration, and usage. Check current AWS pricing pages and the AWS Pricing Calculator for a cost estimate specific to your setup before deployment.

Troubleshoot the common setup failures

  • The wizard does not offer your source. The wizard only supports its documented input choices. Select a compatible source path or configure a suitable manual workflow instead.
  • MediaLive is running but playback fails. Check the chain in order: source delivery to the MediaLive input, MediaLive output destination, MediaPackage channel and endpoint, CloudFront origin and distribution, then player compatibility.
  • The MediaPackage endpoint exists but has no playable content. Confirm that the encoder output is directed to the correct channel and that the channel is receiving it; an endpoint alone does not provide a live feed.
  • CloudFront cannot retrieve the origin. Review the distribution’s MediaPackage origin configuration and any origin authorization. In the AWS reference design, CloudFront-to-MediaPackage authorization uses a CDN identifier in a custom header.
  • One device plays the event but another does not. Check which of HLS, DASH, or CMAF the endpoint and player support, then test on the actual device and player combination. The AWS reference documents these formats but does not guarantee every player supports all of them.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded video 24/7—not a live event from a camera—StreamNeo is a simpler fit than building an AWS event pipeline. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream uses the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
