There is no universally best typeface or pixel size: what works depends on the output, platform scaling, device, viewing distance, language, and changing background.
Start with the text’s job
Separate short display text—such as a title, name, or label—from captions and longer explanatory overlays. Give each role a clear hierarchy so viewers can tell what to notice first. This is a useful production approach, not a hierarchy prescribed by W3C.
W3C WAI advises: “For any text, consider the font family, size, and contrast between the text and background.” Use those factors as a starting point, then judge the result against the video where it will appear.
What font is easiest to read on a stream?
No source establishes one typeface as easiest for every stream. Choose a font that remains legible at the sizes and playback conditions your audience is likely to use, and that supports the language and symbols in your content. Check actual words, punctuation, speaker names, and any non-Latin scripts you need; a style that fits a channel identity is not useful if its characters are hard to distinguish.

Compare candidate treatments on the footage using these practical criteria:
- Legibility: Can viewers distinguish the letters and words at representative playback sizes?
- Contrast: Does the text remain distinguishable from the background?
- Hierarchy: Are titles, labels, and captions visually distinct in a way that suits their roles?
- Picture coverage: How much of the video does the text cover, and does it hide something important?
- Consistency and language support: Does the treatment fit the channel while accommodating its languages and symbols?
How big should text be on a video?
There is no universal pixel size or line-length formula established for live streams. A nominal size can appear very different after platform scaling and on different devices. Test the exported or streamed result at representative playback sizes rather than relying only on the editing canvas. Check long captions and labels as well as short headings, since their reading demands differ.

Check contrast over changing footage
A color pairing that works over one shot may disappear over another. Review text against the range of scenes where it will appear, including bright, dark, detailed, and moving backgrounds. Choose a treatment that maintains distinction across those scenes; do not assume a particular font weight, outline, or shadow will work everywhere.
For applicable web content, WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.3 sets minimum contrast ratios of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large-scale text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. These are accessibility criteria within WCAG’s scope, not a complete guarantee that text will be readable in every video, platform, or viewing setup. See WCAG 2.1, Success Criterion 1.4.3.

Do not communicate meaning with color alone
If color identifies a speaker, status, or category, add another cue so the distinction survives for viewers who cannot rely on color. For example, pair a speaker color with the speaker’s name, or use a label or shape alongside a status color. W3C’s guidance explains the accessibility concern in Understanding Success Criterion 1.4.1: Use of Color.
Make captions readable without covering the video
Captions are synchronized text for audio content, not merely decorative subtitles. They should communicate dialogue and relevant non-speech information, such as speaker identification and significant sound effects. A polished type treatment cannot make up for missing caption information.

Position captions and other overlays so they do not hide faces, charts, demonstrations, or other relevant visual information. W3C states: “Captions should not obscure or obstruct relevant information in the video.” WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 requires captions for live audio content in synchronized media, subject to its scope and notes. Read W3C’s explanation of live captions and its media accessibility guidance.
Use a repeatable review before publishing
- List the roles: Identify which text is a title, name, label, caption, or explanation.
- Choose a treatment for each role: Set font family, size, and contrast with a clear visual hierarchy.
- Preview over representative footage: Check different scenes and backgrounds, not just a still frame.
- Check real playback: Review the video at likely viewing sizes and after the platform’s scaling or encoding, where possible.
- Inspect placement and meaning: Ensure text avoids important picture information and that color-coded distinctions have a non-color cue.
- Review caption content: Check dialogue, relevant audio cues, and speaker identification where needed.
Typography is one part of accessible video
Accessible video involves more than choosing a font. Depending on the content, consider transcripts, description of visual information, sign language, and an accessible media player as well as captions. W3C’s Making Audio and Video Media Accessible explains these complementary considerations.
