To add live captions to a YouTube stream with SyncWords, send your existing broadcast to SyncWords over RTMP, configure transcription and an RTMP PUSH output with Embedded 608 captions, then enable embedded captions in YouTube Studio. Start the SyncWords Service before sending the stream; otherwise it cannot accept the incoming feed and deliver its output.
How the SyncWords-to-YouTube caption path works
Your encoder or streaming service sends video and audio to SyncWords. SyncWords generates captions from the incoming audio, embeds them in a 608 caption stream, and pushes the result to YouTube over RTMP. YouTube must be configured to read those embedded captions. The instructions below follow SyncWords’ official Help Center guidance; they are not a report of an independently tested stream.
Set up captions and connect the stream
- Create or open a SyncWords Service. In SyncWords Live, create a new Service or open the existing Service you intend to use.
- Set the input to RTMP PUSH. Under Input Media, choose RTMP PUSH and use the generated input URL and stream key in your existing encoder or streaming service. SyncWords names OBS, Wirecast, and StreamYard as examples of sources that can send the feed.
- Configure transcription. Set the Service to generate captions from the incoming audio. If you want translated subtitles or dubbed audio, configure those options as well; they are optional and affect the buffering choice later.
- Configure the output. Under Output, choose RTMP PUSH and add a destination. Enter the Stream URL and Stream Key from YouTube Studio’s Stream Settings. In Captions & Subtitles, enable Embedded 608.
- Set YouTube’s caption source. In YouTube Studio, open the live stream’s Stream Settings, enable Closed Captions, and set Captions Source to Embedded 608/708.
- Start the SyncWords Service, then send your source feed. SyncWords states that the Service must be started to accept an incoming stream and deliver its output. Start the Service, then start or connect the encoder feeding its RTMP input. Confirm the output reaches YouTube before relying on the captions during a live event.
The two caption settings are a pair: if YouTube’s Closed Captions option is not enabled or Embedded 608/708 is not selected as the source, SyncWords says the feed passed through to YouTube will not contain captions.
Check the incoming stream settings
SyncWords’ “Send Captions to YouTube (RTMP 608)” guide specifies these incoming parameters. The guide carries a 2025 copyright notice but no separate publication or revision date; treat these as SyncWords’ documented requirements, not as independently tested recommendations.

| Setting | SyncWords guide value |
|---|---|
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz |
| Frame rate | 29.97 or 30 fps |
| Video bitrate | Minimum 3,500 Kbps |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 or 4:3 |
Check these values in the encoder that sends the stream to SyncWords. If you change encoder settings, verify that the source still works with the rest of your broadcast setup.
Choose caption channels and buffering
Embedded 608 channels
SyncWords describes 608 as traditional closed captions embedded directly in the video signal. You can assign a language to CC1 and, if needed, CC2–CC4. SyncWords cautions that not all players can read captions from CC2–CC4, so test the intended YouTube playback path before relying on an additional channel. If CC1 captions already exist in the source and should be retained, the output configuration also offers a passthrough choice.

Buffer according to translation and latency needs
SyncWords’ RTMP output guide gives different buffer recommendations for different workflows. The help page displays a 2025 copyright notice but no separate publication or revision date.
| Workflow | Documented buffer recommendation | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Translated audio | 60 seconds | Allows more time for translated audio; adds delay. |
| Translated subtitles only | 30 seconds | Provides a buffer for translated text, with less delay than the translated-audio recommendation. |
| Same-language captions where low latency matters | 0–5 seconds | Reduces added buffering, but leaves less time for late captions. |
These are workflow-specific recommendations rather than a single setting for every stream. SyncWords also documents frame reordering to support caption embedding across different frame rates and a default late-caption timeout of 30 seconds in its output configuration.

Send to more than one RTMP destination
SyncWords’ RTMP output guide documents up to four simultaneous RTMP destinations. Each destination can have its own connector type, URL, stream key, and dubbing language, while all destinations receive the same encoded stream and caption set. The guide’s visible copyright year is 2025, and it does not state a separate publication or revision date. Confirm the destination credentials and caption compatibility for each endpoint before going live.
Estimate usage before choosing languages and outputs
SyncWords’ published Live usage page says billing depends on how long an Event or Service is connected and how many outputs it generates. Each language’s captions, subtitles, or audio translation counts as a separate output. For example, its page counts one hour of English captions, French and Spanish subtitles, and French audio translation as four hours of usage.

The page carries a 2025 copyright notice but does not give a separate publication or revision date.
Troubleshoot missing captions or output
- YouTube receives video but no captions: Confirm that SyncWords transcription is configured, Embedded 608 is enabled for the RTMP PUSH output, and YouTube has Closed Captions enabled with Captions Source set to Embedded 608/708.
- SyncWords does not receive the source: Check that the encoder is pointed at the generated RTMP PUSH input details, that the URL and key are correct, and that the SyncWords Service is started.
- The output does not reach YouTube: Recheck the YouTube Stream URL and Stream Key entered in the SyncWords destination, and confirm the destination is configured as RTMP PUSH.
- A secondary caption language is unavailable in playback: If it is assigned to CC2–CC4, test player support; SyncWords warns that not all players read those channels. Consider whether the audience can be served using CC1 instead.
- Captions arrive too late or translated audio is not aligned as expected: Review the buffer against the workflow—SyncWords recommends 60 seconds for translated audio, 30 seconds for translated subtitles only, and 0–5 seconds for low-latency same-language captions. Adjust based on the latency and translation needs of the event.
- Captions appear to miss frames or arrive late: Review frame-rate compatibility and the output’s frame-reordering and late-caption timeout settings. SyncWords documents frame reordering for caption embedding across different frame rates and a default late-caption timeout of 30 seconds.
Or let it run in the cloud
SyncWords adds captions to an incoming live broadcast; it is not a service for keeping uploaded videos looping as a YouTube livestream. If your separate goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
