If you suspect a takeover, recover and secure the associated Google Account before undoing unauthorized channel changes. A stream interruption without signs of account compromise is a separate problem; account-security guidance alone cannot identify whether a network, encoder, or YouTube service caused it.
Secure the Google Account that controls your channel
A YouTube channel takeover involves at least one associated Google Account being compromised. Start with that account, not just the channel settings. YouTube recommends 2-Step Verification and says a passkey as the second verification method offers the strongest protection against phishing. See YouTube’s account-security guidance.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification. In your Google Account security settings, enable 2-Step Verification and choose a passkey as the second verification method where available.
- Set recovery options. Add and verify a recovery phone number and email address so you have a route back into the account if you lose access.
- Prepare a fallback. Review the other re-authentication methods available to your account and keep backup codes somewhere secure and offline if you use them. Google lists security keys and backup codes among the available methods; they are backups, not a reason to skip a passkey.
- Check access periodically. Review account security and connected apps, and remove apps you no longer use or trust.
How verification methods compare
| Method | Phishing protection and trade-off |
|---|---|
| Passkey | YouTube identifies a passkey used with 2-Step Verification as its strongest listed protection against phishing. Availability depends on your devices and account setup. |
| Google prompt | YouTube ranks Google prompts above SMS codes. They require access to a signed-in device. |
| SMS code | Less secure than Google prompts in YouTube’s guidance; it also depends on access to the associated phone number. |
| Printed backup codes | Useful if other sign-in methods are unavailable, but YouTube describes backup codes as less secure options. Store them so other people cannot access them. |
| Security key | A physical security key is an available re-authentication method. Check that your devices and account support the key you choose; no particular brand or model is endorsed here. |
These methods and their relative security are described in YouTube’s security guidance and hacked-channel recovery guidance. Keep recovery options usable: a strong sign-in method is less helpful if you cannot recover the account after losing a device.
Reduce phishing, malware, and collaborator risk
Creators may receive messages framed as sponsorship or brand-deal opportunities. Treat unexpected links, attachments, and software requests as potential phishing or malware. YouTube says it will not ask for your password or account details by email, message, or phone call. Its creator safety tips recommend these precautions:
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Verify a sponsorship request through a contact route you already know, rather than relying on contact details or links in the message.
- Do not open suspicious files or install software from an untrusted source. Scan for malware and consider enabling Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome.
- Never give a collaborator your Google Account password. Use YouTube channel permissions or Brand Account permissions instead.
- Review who has channel access, check that each person still needs it, and remove stale access. Use the narrowest suitable role for each collaborator.
- Review connected apps and revoke access for those that are no longer needed or that you do not recognize.
What to do if you think your channel was hacked
Possible warning signs include profile or description changes you did not make, altered email settings or AdSense association, and videos you did not upload. If you see these signs, follow YouTube’s hacked-channel recovery process in order:
- Recover the Google Account associated with the channel. If you cannot sign in, use Google Account recovery. Set a new password that you do not use on any other account.
- Secure the account. Once access is restored, enable 2-Step Verification with a passkey, update recovery details, check account activity and remove unfamiliar connected apps.
- Undo unauthorized channel changes promptly. Check channel details, videos, settings, and any linked services for changes you did not authorize.
- Check access for every channel user. Make sure other people with channel access still need it, and remove accounts or permissions that are unauthorized or no longer required.
- Use YouTube’s available help. Eligible creators who have recovered their Google Account may contact Creator Support. YouTube also provides a hacked-channel assistant. The help page says support for potential hacking incidents is limited to incidents within the past nine months because of data retention.
Do not treat regaining access as the end of recovery: unauthorized channel settings or collaborator access can remain after the Google Account is secured.
Tell a security incident apart from a live-stream interruption
A changed profile, unfamiliar uploads, altered account settings, or unexpected access points toward a possible compromise. A dropped or unstable broadcast by itself does not prove hacking. Account-security steps reduce takeover risk, but they do not diagnose encoder trouble, network conditions, or a YouTube service incident.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover streaming methods and eligibility, not a full method for determining why a broadcast stopped. If the stream fails without evidence of account changes, investigate the encoder, local connection, and YouTube status or stream notifications separately; do not infer a cause from security guidance alone.

Before a planned broadcast, confirm that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, which YouTube lists as eligibility requirements. The same guidance identifies mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming methods. These eligibility checks do not establish that a particular interruption is an account attack.

Keep a recovery plan ready before you go live
- Keep account recovery phone and email details current, and know where your secure backup sign-in method is stored.
- Know which collaborators have permissions and how to remove a user who should no longer have access.
- Save the official hacked-channel recovery page so you can reach it even when stressed or working from another device.
- If an interruption occurs, record what happened and whether there are signs of account changes; separate those observations from guesses about the network, encoder, or platform.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your concern is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running while your own computer is off—not securing the Google Account itself—StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This does not replace account security or make a camera-based broadcast live from your location. Start the free first day.
