To repurpose a livestream, save its recording, use AI or YouTube’s built-in tools to find promising moments, then edit each into a self-contained vertical clip with checked captions. Treat AI selections as suggestions: you still need to verify context, framing, accuracy, rights, and the destination’s current rules before publishing.
1. Start with a usable recording
Keep the finished livestream recording in a location your editing or clipping tool can access. If you marked moments while live, use those notes to guide the first pass, but review the surrounding footage too: the best short clip may need a little setup before the moment you flagged.

2. Find candidate moments
Use an AI clipping feature to scan the recording and suggest segments, or select moments yourself with the platform’s creator tools. StreamYard says its AI Clips feature analyzes a recording and generates suggested clips; that describes the vendor’s feature, not an independent assessment of its accuracy.

Use YouTube’s native tools when the recording is already there
YouTube Studio lets a creator select a segment from their own eligible long-form video and make a Clip or Short. That can be sufficient if you want to work from a YouTube upload rather than import the recording into another service. Check YouTube’s instructions and the source video’s eligibility at YouTube Help: Create YouTube Shorts from your videos.
Consider an integrated or separate clipper when it fits your workflow
If you already record or stream in a service with AI clipping, check whether it can process those recordings and whether its export, editing, privacy, and plan limits fit your needs. If you need to bring in recordings from several sources, a separate clipping service may be useful; confirm source compatibility, editing control, output quality on your footage, usage limits, and total cost before relying on it. Current features and prices for competing clip services are not established here, so compare their live plan details directly rather than assuming a feature or price.

3. Turn each suggestion into a complete idea
Choose clips that make sense without the full livestream. A striking sentence or reaction may attract attention but leave viewers unsure what it means. Keep enough setup to identify the subject and enough conclusion to preserve the speaker’s point. Remove dead air and detours, but do not trim away a qualification that changes the meaning.
- Watch the suggested segment from beginning to end, then check the surrounding recording for missing context.
- Confirm the clip does not make a guest’s answer, demonstration, or opinion appear to say something different when removed from the conversation.
- Prefer one clear takeaway per clip. If an idea needs a long explanation to be accurate, choose a longer segment or a different moment.
4. Reframe for vertical viewing
For a vertical short, inspect the whole frame rather than trusting an automatic crop. Keep the speaker, demonstration, or other essential on-screen material visible throughout; a crop that works at the start can miss a second speaker or a detail later. If the source has slides, a screen share, or multiple people, compare the vertical crop with the original. Reposition or resize the content, use a suitable background treatment, or choose a different segment if the key information cannot be made legible.
5. Generate captions, then correct them
Automatic captions are a draft, not a transcript to publish without review. Compare them with the source audio and correct names, technical terms, punctuation, and timing. 6. Check rights and platform rules
Before reusing an excerpt, check the rights to music, guest material, screen-shared media, and other third-party content in it. Permission to include material in a livestream does not necessarily establish permission to republish it in a clip. YouTube warns that copyrighted material in uploads must be approved for use and may lead to claims or takedowns; see its guidance on creating Shorts from your videos.
For standard YouTube channels, YouTube’s current help documentation says eligible square or vertical videos up to three minutes can be Shorts. Treat this as a YouTube eligibility rule, not a universal length for every destination, and check the current rules for each platform before posting: YouTube Help: Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts.

7. Export, preview, and publish
- Export in the aspect ratio and format appropriate for the destination, and confirm the rendered file still has readable captions and an intact crop.
- Watch the export on a phone. Check the opening, caption timing, sound, safe framing, and ending; do not assume the editor preview matches the final file.
- Upload separately to each destination and review its current specifications and publishing options. YouTube says a creator can record, edit, and upload Shorts using a phone, so specialized equipment is not required to get started. YouTube Shorts upload tips.
Which workflow should you choose?
Start with the least complicated option that fits the recording you have. If the video is already on YouTube and you only need to select a segment, try YouTube Studio’s native creation path. If your recording service offers clipping and you want suggestions from its own recordings, assess that integrated feature. If you need imports or editing controls your existing tools do not provide, evaluate a separate service using your own footage and its current terms. There is no established neutral performance comparison here that would support declaring one clipping tool best for every creator.
