You can run a continuous YouTube study-music stream by looping your media through FFmpeg on a VPS and sending the encoded output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The VPS keeps the encoder running when your own computer is off, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the process, host network, YouTube ingest, broadcast configuration, or media can still fail. The reliable approach is to prepare rights-cleared files, use settings that match YouTube’s current guidance and your VPS capacity, supervise FFmpeg, and monitor the received stream in Live Control Room.

Before you start: media, rights, and infrastructure

Prepare the audio and visual loop

Choose audio and a visual that can repeat without an abrupt cut, silence, or distracting jump. Check that every file decodes correctly and that the audio and video loop as intended. FFmpeg input-loop behavior and command syntax can vary by build, so test your exact files with the FFmpeg documentation for the version installed on your VPS: FFmpeg documentation.

Clear the rights for the whole use

Confirm that the music license permits livestreaming on YouTube and covers any recording YouTube retains, as well as monetization if you intend to monetize. Buying a track, calling it “study music,” or crediting its creator does not by itself establish those permissions. Check the license terms for each recording and visual before broadcasting.

Choose a VPS for sustained work, not a guessed minimum

No universal minimum VPS size is established for this workflow. Compare sustained CPU capacity, outbound bandwidth and traffic limits, network reliability, region, support, and total cost. Your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate affect the load; test the actual settings from the VPS before relying on them.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and ingest

  1. Configure the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and configure or schedule the broadcast. Check that your channel’s intended 24/7 broadcast setup is in place; an encoder reconnect does not necessarily create or resume the public broadcast you expect.
  2. Get the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted version of RTMP. Use the RTMPS URL if your FFmpeg build and selected workflow support it; treat the values shown in your account as authoritative rather than copying an endpoint from an old tutorial. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance and Live API stream resource documentation.
  3. Protect the key. Store it outside source control and do not publish it in a command, screenshot, log, or repository. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.

YouTube’s Live API distinguishes the encoder-facing stream configuration from the broadcast event. An API response can provide the ingest address and stream name separately; depending on the encoder, they may be entered separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the format expected by your FFmpeg output and the current values from Live Control Room or the API rather than assuming an older URL pattern.

Choose FFmpeg settings that YouTube and your VPS can sustain

Protocol and codec

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP-family ingest and recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. It identifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; the appropriate choice depends on the selected ingest method and compatibility. For a straightforward standard-dynamic-range study stream, RTMPS is a practical path when supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube notes that HLS may suit HDR or capabilities not supported over RTMP(S), but it can require a different compatible workflow.

Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes

Choose resolution and frame rate based on the visual content, quality you need, and VPS capacity. Then consult YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate table rather than reusing one bitrate for every output size. Its guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Calculate GOP length from your selected frame rate: for example, a two-second interval means twice the frame rate in frames. YouTube’s guidance allows frame rates up to 60 fps, but higher settings are not automatically useful for a mostly static study visual.

For audio, select a supported sample rate and bitrate appropriate to the stream. YouTube’s current guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, with 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. Confirm that your input, output codec, and ingest workflow agree.

Run and supervise FFmpeg on the VPS

  1. Install and verify FFmpeg. Use a build on your VPS that supports the chosen codecs and RTMPS protocol. Check the installed version and available encoders and protocols before designing the output.
  2. Test the media loop locally on the VPS. Use the installed FFmpeg documentation to configure the inputs to repeat and encode at real-time pace. Verify that audio and video continue together, without gaps, drift, or the process exiting when an input ends. Loop options can be input-specific and version-sensitive, so there is no universally correct command for every set of files.
  3. Set the output deliberately. Configure the chosen video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, CBR target, and GOP/keyframe interval. Supply the account’s current RTMPS endpoint and stream key using a protected secret mechanism rather than embedding the key in a public script or shell history.
  4. Run a representative test broadcast. YouTube advises testing before going live. Use similar audio and motion to the planned stream, check the VPS’s real outbound capacity, and adjust quality downward if it cannot sustain the target consistently.
  5. Keep the process supervised. A service manager can start FFmpeg after a VPS reboot and restart it after a process failure. Configure and test that behavior for your operating system and service manager. A running service only shows that the local process is alive; it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  6. Monitor YouTube’s view of the stream. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during testing and operation. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into viewer output formats, but encoder health and the resulting viewer experience are separate things.

Plan for broadcast recovery, not just process recovery

There are two separate lifecycles: FFmpeg’s connection to YouTube and the YouTube broadcast event shown to viewers. The Live API models these as distinct stream and broadcast resources, and describes a 24/7-feed use case. Confirm how your channel’s broadcast is configured for a continuous feed and what happens when the encoder reconnects; do not assume a process restart will resume the intended public video automatically. Review the YouTube Live API broadcast lifecycle alongside your Live Control Room settings.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • No incoming signal: Compare the stream URL, protocol, and key with the current values in Live Control Room. Check for a copied key with missing characters and ensure the output targets the intended endpoint.
  • TLS or SSL error: Verify that both the protocol and server are set to RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says port 443 may be specified if an SSL error persists and the URL setup calls for it; do not add it blindly to an endpoint that does not require it.
  • Unstable or degraded stream: The VPS may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the path to the ingest server may be unreliable. Reduce the target quality, retest with representative content, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • FFmpeg is running but viewers see a problem: Check Live Control Room rather than relying on the VPS service status. The platform’s received-stream health can reveal issues the local process cannot.
  • FFmpeg reconnects but the live video behaves incorrectly: Review the broadcast’s lifecycle and settings separately from the encoder stream. Confirm whether the existing broadcast should resume or a new event is required.
  • Audio or video stops repeating cleanly: Test the loop behavior with the installed FFmpeg build and inspect the source files for decode errors, mismatched durations, or an unexpected end-of-file exit.
