The timing alone does not prove YouTube is imposing a timeout or that the VPS is incompatible. Start by matching the exact failure time against encoder logs, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and VPS network and resource events; then change one setting at a time and run a test long enough to cover the usual failure window.
Start by locating where the stream fails
Separate an encoder stopping from an encoder that continues running but loses its connection to YouTube’s ingest. Record the UTC time and compare evidence from all three places: the encoder on the VPS, YouTube Live Control Room, and the VPS provider’s monitoring or event history.
- Write down the stream start time, disconnect time, total duration, and whether the encoder automatically reconnected.
- Save the encoder log lines immediately before and after the event. For OBS, review its log; for FFmpeg, retain the relevant console or service log output.
- Note the Live Control Room stream-health status and any warning shown around the same time.
- Check VPS outbound network graphs, CPU and memory metrics, firewall or security events, maintenance notices, and provider-side incidents at that timestamp.
- Keep stream keys and other credentials out of public logs, screenshots, and support tickets. Redact them before sharing diagnostic material.
The correlation matters more than the fact that the failure happens “every few hours.” A regular interval is worth noting, but by itself does not identify a YouTube timeout, VPS limit, or encoder defect.
Check the encoder and YouTube’s stream health
Open YouTube Live Control Room while the stream is running and use its specific health warning, if one appears, rather than guessing from the disconnect. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends keeping the encoder current, checking the stream’s appearance and sound, looking at encoder errors and CPU load, reviewing a local archive, and checking the strength of the outbound connection. A stream that looks healthy in the encoder but has trouble reaching ingest can point toward the outbound Internet path. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.

For viewer-side reports, distinguish whether the problem affects one viewer, multiple viewers on the same network, or viewers on different networks. Those patterns suggest different parts of the delivery path and should not be conflated with an encoder-to-ingest disconnect.
Verify the stream profile and sustained upload capacity
Check the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and configured bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are configuration guidance, not evidence of what caused a particular failure.

These figures are from YouTube’s settings page, current as accessed in 2026. Use the row matching your codec and profile rather than treating one number as universal. The VPS must sustain the configured outbound bitrate over time, with room for variability. A brief speed test or an advertised port speed does not demonstrate sustained delivery during a long broadcast.

YouTube’s settings guidance recommends a realistic preflight with audio and motion and monitoring stream health while live. If OBS shows dropped frames, its connection guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate; that is an OBS general starting point, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee for a VPS. Retrieve the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for the event in Live Control Room, then compare them with the encoder configuration on the VPS. Do not assume a remembered endpoint or key is still the one being used. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP.
If the encoder reports an SSL or connection error, YouTube’s RTMPS instructions advise checking that the server and protocol are configured for RTMPS; port 443 can be specified if needed. For a “connection timed out” message, check the URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. These checks are useful when the evidence points to a connection or setup issue, but a timeout check alone does not explain why an established stream disconnects hours later.

Match health warnings and encoder logs to likely causes
YouTube’s Live API health issue list covers conditions including high or low bitrate, unsupported codec, frame rate, GOP or keyframe frequency, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. Use the actual warning to guide a targeted check. YouTube notes that a keyframe frequency above four seconds can cause buffering; that is a reason to correct an identified keyframe issue, not to assume it caused every multi-hour disconnect.
For OBS, dropped frames or intermittent disconnections are framed as a network issue between the encoder and remote ingest. On a VPS, that makes the relevant path the server’s outbound connection to YouTube, not a home router or desktop Wi-Fi connection. OBS lists unstable connectivity, bitrate beyond what the path can sustain, firewall or security software, VPNs, network-optimization software, and network faults among possible causes.

Compare outbound throughput and drops at the failure time with the encoder’s configured bitrate and logs. Review the provider’s network graphs, route or egress changes, firewall rules, resource events, and maintenance history. If the VPS dashboard reports no issue, that does not by itself establish that the route to YouTube ingest was stable throughout the broadcast.

- If logs show dropped frames or unstable delivery, test a lower bitrate or another ingest server where the encoder offers one, changing only one variable per test.
- Check VPS firewall and egress policy for relevant connection interruptions. Do not disable security controls indiscriminately; verify rules and provider guidance.
- Check whether a VPN or network optimization layer is in the path and whether the evidence implicates it before changing it.
- Escalate to the VPS provider with UTC timestamps, redacted logs, and relevant network metrics if provider routing, egress, or maintenance may be involved.
A migration is worth considering only when measurements implicate the current provider, capacity, route, policy, monitoring, or support. Changing hosts without identifying a host or path problem can leave the cause untouched.
Run a controlled test before calling it fixed
- Choose a private or unlisted test broadcast and use representative video with motion and audio.
- Record the profile, bitrate, keyframe interval, ingest endpoint, encoder version, and start time.
- Monitor encoder logs, YouTube stream health, CPU load, and VPS outbound network metrics while it runs.
- If evidence points to a setting or path, change one variable, such as bitrate or endpoint, and document the change.
- Keep the test running beyond the usual failure interval. A shorter clean test cannot establish that a recurring multi-hour problem is resolved.
This process narrows the cause; it is not a guarantee that any single adjustment will fix the stream.
