First, identify which problem you mean: a livestream you are broadcasting looks bad, or YouTube videos you are watching look blurry or keep buffering. A creator’s outgoing stream and a viewer’s playback have different causes, so start with the matching checks below rather than changing settings at random.
If your livestream looks blurry, blocky, or unstable
Start in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check the stream-health indicator and read its messages before changing encoder settings. YouTube identifies incorrect bitrate, an unsupported codec or stream format, a resolution mismatch, an excessive frame rate, and incorrect keyframe frequency as possible causes of live-stream errors. Fix the reported issue first, then reassess the stream.
For the current supported codecs, formats, and settings, use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table. Settings can change, so treat that official table as the reference rather than relying on an old preset.
Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, and codec
The figures below are YouTube Help’s published H.264 encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. “Minimum” and “recommended” are YouTube’s figures, not a guarantee that a connection will sustain the stream at all times.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These numbers apply to H.264. YouTube publishes different bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265; do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec. Choose an output your connection can reliably sustain, not simply the highest resolution your encoder offers.
Check keyframes and rate control
YouTube’s current encoder settings page recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Confirm your encoder’s codec and settings against that page. A mismatched keyframe interval or rate-control setting can impair ingestion even when the image looks fine locally.

Separate source or encoder problems from network problems
- Check the encoder preview. If the picture or sound is already poor there, inspect the camera, capture, media, and audio/video sources routed into the encoder. YouTube Help notes that poor output may come from the quality of the sources routed to the encoder.
- Review a local recording, if you have one. If the archive also looks bad, the problem is likely upstream of YouTube playback: examine the source, encoder messages, and system load.
- Check CPU load and encoder errors. Heavy load or encoder warnings can affect output. Update the encoder software and test again before changing unrelated settings.
- If local output is clean, test the outbound connection. Compare actual upload capacity with the encoder’s total bitrate, then check for network interruptions or shared-network congestion.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, monitoring stream health while live, and reviewing any messages. If many viewers on different connections report the same quality problem, inspect the encoder and stream health before assuming each viewer has a separate connection issue.
Leave upload headroom
YouTube Help’s streaming tips say: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” The 20% is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measurement of stability for every network. Other devices and users on a shared connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, and a connection disruption can break a stream. If connection tests show a problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.

If YouTube playback is blurry, buffering, or stuck at low quality
Viewer playback quality is about the connection and playback device receiving the video—not the creator’s outgoing upload bitrate. Try these checks in order.
- Test another connection. Switch networks if possible, or compare playback on another device. If it improves, the original network or device is a useful place to investigate.
- Reduce network contention. Pause downloads and other bandwidth-heavy activity, and check whether other devices are using the same connection.
- Select playback quality manually. When the player offers the option, open its settings and choose a resolution to test whether automatic quality selection is the issue.
- Improve wireless conditions. Move nearer to the router and check for obstructions or interference. You can compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection if one is available; this is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check the app, browser, and device. Try YouTube in a supported browser or the app, restart the app or device, and clear the app cache where that option exists. Menu names and cache steps vary by device, so use the instructions for your computer, phone, or TV.
YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting page gives these approximate sustained connection speeds: 20 Mbps for 4K, 5 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p. These are viewer playback estimates, not livestream upload-bitrate targets.

Why does my YouTube stream keep buffering?
For a viewer, buffering can point to insufficient or inconsistent connection capacity, competing network use, wireless interference, or an app or device issue. Compare playback on another connection and device, reduce competing network activity, and check the player’s selected quality.
For a creator, distinguish buffering reported by viewers from problems in the outgoing stream. Review Live Control Room health messages, confirm the encoder output and settings, then test whether available upload bandwidth can sustain the total bitrate with headroom. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance covers encoder, source, CPU, and outbound-connection checks.
