Add YouTube chapters by editing a video’s description in YouTube Studio and adding a list of timestamp-and-title pairs. Start at 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Save the video when you’re done. YouTube’s Video chapters help page documents these requirements.

Sign in to YouTube Studio.

Open Content and select the video you want to edit.

In the video description, add each timestamp followed by a short, accurate chapter title. Put each entry on its own line. For example:

Check the list before saving: the first timestamp must be 00:00, there must be at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

Save the video. YouTube says manually entered chapters override automatic chapters.
Use titles that describe what is actually covered at each point. Chapters are sections of a video with individual previews; clear labels help viewers find the part they want.

Manual chapters or automatic chapters?

You can also opt out of automatic chapters for an individual video or through upload defaults. Studio labels and navigation can change, but the distinction remains: manual chapters are written in the description; automatic chapters are controlled in settings. Automatic chapters are disabled or unavailable. Review the video’s settings and the Allow automatic chapters control. YouTube says automatic chapters are unavailable if the channel has active strikes or if the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.

Automatic chapters were not generated. Eligibility does not guarantee that YouTube will create chapters. Add manual timestamps if you want to specify sections yourself.

You do not have chapter access yet. YouTube’s chapters help page says creators can apply for advanced features if they do not yet have chapter access.
