Yes. A YouTube livestream can receive a copyright strike after it ends if its archived video is removed following a copyright removal request that YouTube reviews and considers valid. A Content ID claim on an archived stream is different: it typically does not, by itself, result in a strike.

How copyright enforcement can happen during and after a livestream

While the stream is live

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If it detects such content, YouTube may display a placeholder and warn the streamer. If the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

After the broadcast

If you archive the livestream, YouTube may make a Content ID claim after the stream is complete. Separately, a copyright owner may submit a removal request. YouTube reviews that request; if it appears valid, YouTube removes the content and applies a copyright strike. That is how a strike can arrive after the broadcast has ended.

Content ID claim versus copyright strike

A Content ID claim and a copyright strike are not interchangeable. A claim is an outcome of a Content ID match; YouTube says such claims typically do not result in a copyright strike. A strike follows a copyright removal request that YouTube reviews and considers valid. Check the notice and the copyright details in YouTube Studio to see which event occurred.

What prompts it A Content ID match; claims on an archived livestream may be made after the stream ends. A rights holder submits a copyright removal request that YouTube reviews and considers valid.

What to check Review the claim details in YouTube Studio. Read the copyright notice and use the applicable strike-resolution route.

What to do if a strike follows an archived stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and inspect the copyright notice and video details. Confirm whether the issue is a Content ID claim, a scheduled removal request, or an applied strike; the actions and consequences differ.
  2. If the notice is for a scheduled removal request, check its deadline. YouTube says the notice may give you seven days to act before removal and a strike. Follow the specific options and deadline in that notice.
  3. If a strike has been applied, choose a resolution route only if it fits your situation. YouTube lists completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, obtaining a retraction from the claimant, or submitting a valid counter notification if the removal was mistaken or an exception applies.
  4. Do not assume deleting the archive will clear a strike. Deleting a video after a strike has been applied does not resolve the strike. A counter notification is a formal route, not a general appeal for any claim; use it only if you have a valid basis.

These time periods and resolution options are described in YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance; the cited Help page does not state a publication year.

Does changing or deleting a livestream archive protect the channel?

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured. In YouTube Studio, creators can change an archive’s privacy setting or delete it. Neither action should be treated as a guarantee against a later rights complaint, and neither clears a strike that has already been applied. See YouTube’s instructions for archiving live streams and its copyright-strike guidance.

How a strike can affect livestreaming

YouTube says that if an active livestream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. A strike involving an active or archived stream may affect live-stream access, and a channel with three copyright strikes is subject to termination. Check the notice and YouTube Studio for the status and restrictions that apply to your channel. Sources: Understand copyright strikes and Changes to account standing.
