The request token is calculated from the entire encoded query string and your private key, so keep that key on the server and use the same query-string representation for token generation and the request.
Install and check the Node.js package
URL2PNG’s Quickstart Guide documents a CommonJS example using the npm package url2png. The documentation links to the package listing, but its current release version and maintenance status are not established here. Before adding it to a production application, check the registry metadata and repository, and confirm that the package works with your Node.js version.
The vendor example does not specify an installation command or a supported Node.js version. If you choose the package, install it using your usual npm workflow and verify the version and dependency health before relying on it.
Build a URL2PNG screenshot request
Here is the vendor-documented CommonJS pattern. Replace the credential placeholders with your URL2PNG API key and private key, and replace google.com with the target host. This example uses the documented options shown in the Quickstart Guide; protocol: 'http' is illustrative, not a recommendation to use HTTP for a site that supports HTTPS.

The short vendor example does not include application-level validation, timeout handling, or stream error handling; add those according to your service’s normal production practices. How URL2PNG v6 authentication works
The v6 request URL includes an API key, a security token, an image path, and a query string containing the encoded target URL and capture options. URL2PNG documents the token as the MD5 hash of the entire query string plus the account secret. Because the signature depends on the complete query-string representation, build the query consistently: the representation used to calculate the token must match the one sent in the request.
- Keep the private key on your server. Do not expose it in browser-side JavaScript or public client code.
- Do not change option ordering, escaping, or encoding after generating the token unless you also regenerate the token from the final query string.
- If you build the v6 URL yourself rather than using the package, implement URL encoding and token generation faithfully to the vendor’s documented scheme.
Save a screenshot to a file or serve it to a client
Save the stream locally
The vendor example pipes readURL() to a write stream. This is useful when the application needs to keep a local copy or transfer the file to object storage afterward. For production code, handle both source and destination stream errors and decide how the application should respond if the capture fails.

URL2PNG’s example also pipes the screenshot stream directly into an HTTP response. Set a suitable content type and status behavior in your framework, and ensure failures are handled before or during the response stream. The vendor snippet does not prescribe a web framework or provide a complete error-handling implementation.

Choose based on whether your application needs a retained artifact, repeat access, or immediate delivery. The exact storage and cache architecture is application-specific.
Choose capture options for the page you need
URL2PNG’s Quickstart Guide documents the following controls. The output depends on the target page and service behavior; these controls do not guarantee that every asynchronous page state has finished rendering.

Viewport-only or full page
Use the viewport option when the visible fold is the artifact you want. Set fullpage=true when you need the document canvas beyond the initial viewport; URL2PNG describes this as an attempt, not a guarantee for every page layout.
Fixed delay or page readiness signal
A fixed delay is straightforward when the page needs extra time after document readiness and asset loading. The say_cheese signal gives a page more direct control: your site can add the specified element only once the content to capture is ready. Neither approach can control third-party pages that do not expose the signal, and actual output still depends on the target and service.

Understand cache freshness and render usage
URL2PNG’s plans page says a newly generated screenshot counts as one render, while loading a cached screenshot does not count against the plan. The vendor lists a default cache TTL of 30 days in its Quickstart Guide. If an updated image is needed before the cached result expires, vary unique (the documentation suggests a timestamp) or use the appropriate TTL behavior.

The plans page reviewed on October 3, 2026 lists monthly allowances of 5,000, 20,000, and 50,000 fresh screenshots alongside displayed prices of $29, $99, and $199 per month. These are vendor-listed plan figures, not independent performance measurements; prices and limits can change. The same page says plans are month-to-month, paid overages are available, there is no free account, and enterprise terms are contact-based rather than a displayed fixed price. Check the URL2PNG plans page for current prices, allowances, and terms before estimating costs.
For budgeting, estimate how many screenshots will be freshly generated rather than simply requested: cache hits do not consume the fresh-render allowance according to the vendor. A changing unique value can deliberately prevent reuse, so apply it only when freshness is worth the additional render.
Troubleshooting a URL2PNG Node.js workflow
- The request is rejected or authentication fails: Check that the API key and private key are correct. Verify that the token was calculated from the complete encoded query string and that the exact same representation is sent.
- The screenshot reflects an old page: The request may be returning a cached capture within the configured TTL. Adjust the TTL or vary
uniquewhen a fresh render is required. - Content is missing from the image: The page may not have reached the state you want when capture began. Use the page readiness element where you control the site, or adjust the fixed delay; neither guarantees completion of arbitrary third-party activity.
- The image is cropped at the viewport: Viewport-only capture is the documented default. Set
fullpage=trueto ask URL2PNG to attempt the full document canvas. - The npm package is incompatible or unreliable: The current release and maintenance status are not established by the linked package listing. Check its current registry details and repository, confirm your Node.js compatibility, and consider constructing the documented v6 request URL directly if the package is unsuitable.
- The output stream fails: The vendor’s short snippet does not cover stream errors or timeouts. Add error handling and timeouts through your application’s chosen HTTP and stream stack, and avoid treating a partially written file as a successful capture.
