FFmpeg does not enumerate YouTube playlists from a playlist URL. If it keeps processing the first video, check which program is selecting playlist entries: use yt-dlp to enumerate and download them, or pass FFmpeg a distinct input for each video. If you only want the video in a watch URL that also contains playlist context, use yt-dlp’s --no-playlist option.
First identify what is repeating the video
Look at the exact command and determine whether it runs ffmpeg, yt-dlp, or both. FFmpeg processes the inputs supplied with -i; a YouTube playlist URL does not, by itself, make FFmpeg select each playlist entry. yt-dlp has playlist and item-selection options, so it is usually the right tool to enumerate a YouTube playlist. FFmpeg can then merge or process the downloaded files.
If your pipeline already provides individual media files or URLs, you can instead give FFmpeg separate, correctly ordered -i inputs. The right fix depends on the command and URL; without those, the symptom alone does not establish a specific cause.

Diagnose yt-dlp playlist selection
Check the URL and selection options
A watch URL can identify one video while also carrying playlist context. If you want just that video, yt-dlp documents --no-playlist for selecting the video alone. If you want the full playlist, use the playlist URL and remove unintended selection limits.

Review the command for --playlist-items. This option deliberately selects playlist positions; a limited range can make a full playlist appear to be repeating or incomplete. For a small diagnostic run, select a few positions, such as --playlist-items 1-3, and inspect the resulting titles or IDs before processing the rest. The expected result is three distinct entries if those positions in the playlist contain distinct videos.
Make the output reveal playlist order
Use a filename template that records the playlist and item index. yt-dlp documents this pattern:

The folder and index make repeated entries, skipped positions, and ordering easier to spot. Record or print item IDs and titles during the diagnostic run as well; filenames alone may not distinguish videos with similar titles.

Check FFmpeg inputs and option order
If FFmpeg is receiving the media directly, inspect every -i argument. Each intended video must be represented by a distinct input, or by the deliberate list or demuxer mechanism your pipeline uses. Reusing one URL or file as the input will not make FFmpeg advance through a YouTube playlist.
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, and input/output options are reset between files. Keep each input’s relevant options in the correct position and confirm that the sequence of -i arguments matches the intended order. A generic loop option will not correct a URL-selection mistake; first verify that the inputs themselves are different.

Use an archive only to prevent downloads on later runs
yt-dlp’s --download-archive records identifiers for successful downloads and skips those videos on later runs when the same archive is used. It is useful when rerunning a playlist without downloading previously completed items again. It does not change which item an incorrectly constructed input selects repeatedly within a single run.
Practical troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the exact command. Identify whether it invokes FFmpeg, yt-dlp, or both. Check the installed yt-dlp version with
yt-dlp --version, since extractor behavior and available options can change. - Classify the URL. Decide whether it is a single-video watch URL with playlist parameters or a playlist URL. For one video, use yt-dlp’s
--no-playlist; for the playlist, use its playlist URL and remove unintended item restrictions. - Test a few playlist positions. Run yt-dlp with an explicit selection such as
--playlist-items 1-3. Inspect item IDs or titles and confirm the entries are distinct before applying FFmpeg processing. - Audit direct FFmpeg inputs. Check that each intended video has its own input or that the intended list mechanism supplies distinct entries. Verify the order of
-iarguments and the position of input-specific options. - Inspect saved filenames. Include playlist name and item index, for example
%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s, so duplicates or missing positions are visible. - Separate rerun behavior from within-run behavior. Add a stable
--download-archivefile if later runs should skip completed videos; do not expect it to fix repeated selection during one run. - Prepare a reproducible report if it persists. Include the exact command, a representative URL with private tokens removed, yt-dlp version, operating system, and relevant verbose output. Avoid sharing credentials or private tokens.
