To connect YouTube Live to a cloud streaming service, copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio into the service’s matching destination and key fields, use YouTube’s RTMPS URL when the service supports it, and test the feed in the Live Control Room preview before making the event public. Treat the key like a password: enter it only into a cloud provider you trust, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed.
What a YouTube stream key does—and why it needs protection
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key lets an encoder send a feed to YouTube, so anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to the associated stream. Keep it out of public posts, screenshots, shared documents, untrusted chats, and support tickets. Configure it only in the cloud service’s intended stream settings, and ensure that anyone with access to the channel or service account is trusted. YouTube’s live stream settings guide also advises granting channel admin access only to people you trust.
Before entering the key in a cloud service
Check the provider’s credential controls
YouTube’s setup instructions explain how to create a stream and obtain its connection details; they do not establish how an unspecified third-party service protects saved keys. Before using a production key, check the provider’s current documentation for who can view or change it, how team permissions work, whether logs or support diagnostics redact it, and how to replace or remove it. Do not assume a service encrypts keys at rest or restricts staff access unless its documentation says so.
Prefer RTMPS when supported
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. In Live Control Room, use the lock control in the Stream URL field to retrieve the RTMPS address; YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP address by default. Enter the RTMPS URL and stream key in the cloud encoder’s corresponding fields, and confirm the provider supports RTMPS and accepts the address unchanged. If a service offers only an unencrypted RTMP endpoint, the YouTube documentation does not establish that sending a secret over that path is safe. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Transfer the stream key safely: step by step
- Select the right YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Stream, then create or select the intended stream. Check its title, schedule, and visibility. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility; use the setting appropriate for a test or event. Manage live stream settings.
- Retrieve the destination and key. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key from the selected stream’s settings. Choose the RTMPS URL using the lock control when the cloud service supports it. Keep both values private while copying them.
- Enter them in the trusted cloud encoder. Open the service’s stream or destination settings and paste the URL into its server or destination field and the key into its stream-key field. Field names vary by provider; use that provider’s current setup documentation. Avoid putting the credential into notes or broadly shared screenshots.
- Send a test feed and inspect the preview. Start the cloud encoder’s test or feed, then wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Check that the correct stream receives the feed and that picture and sound are right. Confirm the stream’s visibility before starting or promoting a public event. - Stop and verify the stream after the event. Stop the cloud encoder and confirm the broadcast ended as intended. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube’s archiving guidance.
If the key may have been exposed
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Stream and find the Stream key section.
- Choose Reset to invalidate the exposed key and create a replacement. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Manage live stream settings.
- Replace the old key in every legitimate encoder or cloud service that still needs to stream. A sender that retains the old key will no longer be able to use that stream configuration.
If the cloud provider does not make its key access or replacement controls clear, do not enter a production key until you have verified those controls.
