Use FFmpeg to send a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live, keep FFmpeg running under a service manager such as systemd, and use cron for bounded jobs such as rebuilding the playlist or running a health check. Cron alone is not a reliable way to own a process that must run continuously: a cron-launched FFmpeg job can exit, fail, or overlap with another invocation.
How the setup fits together
YouTube Live separates the incoming media connection from the viewer-facing broadcast. The stream carries the audio-video feed and its settings; the broadcast is the event or video viewers watch. YouTube’s API guide describes a 24/7 feed being used alongside a separate interview broadcast, illustrating that distinction: YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- FFmpeg reads and sends the video playlist.
- systemd or another service manager owns FFmpeg’s long-running process and can restart it after failure.
- A playlist-generation script creates or updates the list of clips.
- cron runs bounded tasks on a schedule, such as refreshing that list or checking a health signal.
- Monitoring checks both local progress and the public YouTube playback. A running local process does not by itself prove viewers are receiving fresh video.
This systemd-plus-cron arrangement is a practical pattern, not a YouTube requirement. FFmpeg supports playlist-oriented inputs, but the right input format and command depend on the files and the installed FFmpeg build. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.
Prepare and check the video files
Put the clips on accessible storage
Store the files on a disk or mounted volume available to the Linux host. Confirm the account that will run FFmpeg can read every file and the playlist. If new videos arrive through a separate upload or copy process, ensure that process finishes writing each file before adding it to the playlist.

Choose a playlist method that fits the media
FFmpeg’s formats documentation covers concat demuxing and other input formats; it does not prescribe one cron-based YouTube rotation recipe. Pick a method suited to your installed FFmpeg version and the media set. Before relying on it unattended, inspect each clip’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio streams, and duration. Clips with substantially different properties may need to be normalized, or handled by an approach designed for those differences. There is no single encoding profile established for every channel.
Test boundaries between clips, not just playback of each file alone. A playlist can appear correct on disk yet produce a failed transition, missing audio, or a stalled output when FFmpeg reaches a particular file.

Set up YouTube Live credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup.
- Put those values in the FFmpeg configuration used by your service. Treat the stream key like a password: do not commit it to a public repository, expose it in world-readable files, or print it unnecessarily in logs.
- Start the encoder, then use the Live Control Room workflow to check the preview and go live as applicable. Follow YouTube’s current instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
The stream key identifies where the encoder sends its feed. Keep it private and rotate it through YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
Keep FFmpeg running under a service manager
Configure FFmpeg as a long-lived service rather than launching it from an interactive shell or relying on a short-lived cron invocation. A service manager can start it outside a login session and apply a restart policy if the process exits. Keep the service definition and scripts specific to your distribution, filesystem paths, user permissions, FFmpeg build, and selected playlist input. Do not copy a configuration blindly: verify how your FFmpeg process handles a changed playlist, exits, and reconnects before treating it as production-ready.
Use cron for playlist rotation and maintenance
Refresh the playlist safely
Have a script generate an updated playlist from the files that are ready to play, then let cron invoke that script at a fixed schedule. Use explicit paths and a predictable environment because cron does not necessarily inherit the shell environment you see in an interactive session. Log useful outcomes and errors so you can tell whether the refresh ran and what it changed.

Playlist reload behavior depends on the playlist type and FFmpeg command. Do not assume that replacing a playlist file causes an already-running FFmpeg process to reread it. Test that behavior for your chosen input. If the running process cannot pick up changes, plan a controlled restart or use a playlist mechanism that supports the update pattern you need.
Avoid duplicate encoders
Make the scheduled job safe against overlapping runs. Before it starts or restarts FFmpeg, ensure the existing service is in the intended state; use a process lock or the service manager’s own controls rather than launching a second encoder blindly. Two processes using the same stream key can conflict or produce an unexpected feed.

Make deliberate restarts visible
A cron job can schedule maintenance or a restart, but restarting the encoder interrupts the outgoing feed. That interruption may affect the active YouTube broadcast. Choose a maintenance window, log the action, and verify the feed afterward. Do not present periodic restarts as universally necessary: the example configuration is not a general reliability guarantee.

- Run a short test and confirm clips play in the intended order.
- Check audio and video through several playlist boundaries, including files with different properties if your playlist contains them.
- Confirm whether a playlist update is picked up by the running process, and document the restart behavior if it is not.
- Stop the FFmpeg process deliberately and verify that the service manager behaves as configured.
- Check that the watchdog detects the failure mode it is meant to detect and does not launch duplicate FFmpeg jobs.
- Watch the public YouTube playback as well as local process progress; a healthy process can still be sending stale, frozen, or otherwise unusable video.
These are recommended checks, not reported test results for a universal setup. The exact cron syntax, locking method, and playlist reload behavior vary with Linux distribution, shell, FFmpeg command, and input format.
YouTube archive and broadcast limits to account for
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. Plan separately for any recording or archive you need beyond what YouTube provides, and check YouTube’s current guidance before depending on a particular stream’s archive behavior: YouTube encoder setup and live-stream guidance.
Common problems and fixes
