Then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. This is a do-it-yourself setup: the computer running OBS, its internet connection, and the media files must remain available for the stream to continue.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio installed and configured to stream to YouTube.
- VLC media player installed. The VLC Video Source appears in OBS when VLC is installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC.
- Local video or audio files you have the rights to use and that you want to play in sequence.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help, so set it up in advance.
OBS is open-source software available at no charge, as noted in YouTube’s encoder guidance. The steps below use local files as the playlist source; they do not import a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Choose the scene. In OBS, create or select the scene you intend to send to YouTube. Keep the playlist source visible in the active scene while it is meant to play.
- Install VLC with the matching architecture. Install VLC, then restart OBS if the VLC Video Source is not available. Match the architecture: OBS specifically says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene’s Sources panel, click + and select VLC Video Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Add files in the intended order. In the source properties, add the local video or audio files to its playlist. With Shuffle Playlist off, playback follows the listed order; OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
- Enable looping. Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback restarts from the beginning after the last item. If you want a random sequence rather than a fixed order, enable Shuffle Playlist.
- Set behavior when the source is hidden. OBS documents that a VLC source stops when it is not visible and restarts when visible by default. If switching scenes should not interrupt playback, choose the appropriate option for the source to continue while hidden; OBS also provides pause and stop behavior. Alternatively, keep the source visible in the active scene.
- Check playback before streaming. Confirm the playlist starts, advances between files, and returns to the beginning after the last file. Make sure the source is visible in the scene that will be sent to YouTube.
Using one file instead
For a single looping file, OBS’s built-in Media Source is the simpler choice: add the file and enable its Loop option, which is off by default. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. For a sequence of files, use VLC Video Source.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in screenshots or share it publicly.
- Start streaming from OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before completing YouTube’s flow to go live.

What 24/7 means with a local OBS setup
A local playlist keeps broadcasting only while the computer running OBS, the media files, and network access remain available. A power outage, computer restart, lost connection, or unavailable file can interrupt it; the cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Plan for the machine to stay on and connected, and check the stream after any restart or network disruption.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise that a longer continuous 24/7 broadcast will be archived as one complete recording. If an archive matters, do not rely on a single stream lasting longer than that stated limit.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before looping a playlist, confirm you have permission to stream every video and audio track. A file being available to download or play locally does not establish that you have live-streaming rights. YouTube’s Live Control Room can also surface stream-health issues; check its preview and status while bringing the stream online. No playlist setting overrides rights or YouTube’s channel rules.
Troubleshooting common problems
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, ensure its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC), and restart OBS.
- The playlist stops after one pass: Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist to follow the listed order, then arrange the files as needed.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: The source may be hidden, and OBS’s default behavior is to stop it when not visible. Keep it visible in the active scene or select a continue-while-hidden behavior.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that OBS has the stream URL and key copied from the selected YouTube stream, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- First-time live streaming is unavailable: Enable live streaming in advance; YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
