YouTube does not document a native feature that schedules Live broadcasts or adds playlist videos by reading local filenames. You can use filenames to trigger your own automation, but a script must parse them, map each uploaded file to its YouTube video ID, and make the required API calls. Scheduling a Live broadcast and adding an uploaded video to a playlist are separate operations.
What filenames can—and cannot—schedule
A filename can hold date, time, topic, and ordering information for a workflow you build. It is not itself a YouTube scheduling control. In YouTube Studio, scheduled publishing starts by selecting an uploaded file, entering its details, and setting a date, time, and time zone. A scheduled video remains private until its publication time. The published-on date displayed on the watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time (PST), so it may differ from the date suggested by the Studio time zone. YouTube’s scheduled publishing guidance describes the Studio process.
The APIs likewise use YouTube resource fields and IDs, not a local filename as a schedule. Keep these two jobs separate:
- Add an uploaded video to a playlist: identify the destination playlist and the YouTube video, then insert a playlist item.
- Schedule a Live broadcast: create a broadcast event with its own title, scheduled start time, and privacy status, then associate it with a stream.
A playlist item is not a Live broadcast, and creating one does not schedule the other.

Choose a filename convention your script can parse
Use a strict, documented pattern rather than relying on YouTube to interpret a name. For example:
YYYY-MM-DD_HH-mm_topic_sequence.ext
An example filename is 2026-10-30_19-00_evening-mix_003.mp4. This is a suggested local convention, not a YouTube standard. Specify the time zone that applies to the date and time in your script or its configuration; a filename alone does not say whether 19:00 means UTC, a creator’s local time, or another zone. Use a consistent 24-hour clock. If sequence numbers determine ordering, keep them fixed-width (such as 003, 004, 005).

Define what the automation does with duplicate names, missing fields, invalid calendar dates, and daylight-saving transitions. Reject ambiguous input rather than guessing. For example, if a local time occurs twice when clocks move back, the workflow needs a stated rule or an explicit offset; if a time does not exist when clocks move forward, reject it or require correction.
Build the filename-driven playlist workflow
- Scan a designated folder. Have the script consider only the files intended for processing, and match each name against the one strict pattern. Do not infer a schedule from arbitrary text.
- Validate every parsed field. Check that the date exists, the time is valid in the configured time zone, the topic meets your naming rules, and the sequence value is usable. Log and quarantine rejected files so a malformed name cannot silently become the wrong schedule.
- Upload or identify the YouTube video. The local file is not the YouTube resource. After upload, retain the returned YouTube video ID and a durable mapping from the local file to that ID. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes the uploaded file from its video resource; see the video upload guide and playlist item resource reference.
- Identify the destination playlist. Store or retrieve the playlist ID for the intended user-created playlist. A channel’s uploads playlist is a separate playlist associated with uploaded videos; do not assume it is the target for a curated playlist. YouTube documents uploads playlists in its playlist implementation guide.
- Insert the playlist item. Make an authorized API request with the destination
snippet.playlistIdand asnippet.resourceIdidentifyingkind: youtube#videoand the uploadedvideoId. The insertion request requires OAuth 2.0 authorization. See the playlistItems.insert reference. - Persist results and make reruns safe. Record the API response and the local file, video ID, playlist ID, and operation status. Before retrying a failed or interrupted run, check whether the intended item or broadcast was already created. Idempotency and duplicate prevention are responsibilities of your implementation, not a guarantee that YouTube infers from filenames.
Schedule a Live broadcast separately
If the filename is also meant to provide a Live event’s schedule, parse its date and time as input to a separate broadcast workflow. The Live Streaming API’s broadcast resource uses snippet.title, snippet.scheduledStartTime, and status.privacyStatus; the scheduled start must be in the future. The API reference notes scheduling limits and error cases, so validate the time and handle API failures rather than treating a successfully parsed filename as a successfully scheduled event. A broadcast represents the event; a stream represents the audio-video content being transmitted. YouTube associates these as distinct resources through API operations. Keep their returned IDs for subsequent calls instead of treating a filename, playlist item, broadcast, and stream as interchangeable. The liveStreams reference documents the stream resource.

Do not confuse HLS segment names with video filenames
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide has strict filename, extension, and sequence requirements for media playlists and the segments delivered to a Live ingestion endpoint. Those names control transport and segment ordering in the stream; they are not a library naming convention for scheduling uploaded videos or arranging playlist items.
