Choose a VPS for the encoder workload you will actually run—not by a supposed universal CPU or RAM minimum. Passing through compatible video can require far less processing than encoding, scaling, or adding graphics; either way, sustained outbound capacity, transfer limits, server route to YouTube, and automatic recovery matter as much as the instance size. No single VPS specification or provider is established as right for every continuous YouTube stream, so test the complete setup before relying on it unattended.
Start with the video workload
The first decision is whether the VPS will send an already-compatible source as-is or encode a new output. This changes the compute demand substantially.
Pass through compatible media
If the source already matches the output you intend to send, FFmpeg may be able to stream-copy the video rather than re-encode it. That avoids the main video-encoding workload, though the system still needs to read the media, maintain the connection, and handle any audio processing or other enabled filters.
Encode, scale, or add graphics
If you need to change codecs or frame rate, scale the picture, or composite graphics, the VPS must process the output in real time. The resource demand depends on the source, output settings, encoder, and filters; the available guidance does not establish a universal CPU or RAM minimum. Test the actual job on the intended instance class, watching for sustained CPU or memory pressure, and leave headroom rather than choosing a plan that only barely works in a short test.

Choose output settings before sizing the server
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers. Confirm the applicable options in YouTube Live Control Room for your stream, test before going live, and monitor stream health during the event: YouTube’s live encoder settings.
| Example H.264 output | YouTube recommended video bitrate | What this number tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | Ingestion guidance; not a VPS specification. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | Ingestion guidance; not a VPS specification. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Ingestion guidance; not a VPS specification. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | Ingestion guidance; not a VPS specification. |
The 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations in the guidance accessed in 2026; bitrate options can vary by codec and the Live Control Room settings. The video bitrate is only part of the stream payload: include audio and allow for protocol overhead when estimating network use.

Calculate continuous outbound transfer
A continuously running stream sends data all day, so calculate transfer at your intended combined output bitrate before selecting a plan. For scale, a constant payload at 10 Mbps is approximately 108 GB per day in decimal units; at 12 Mbps it is approximately 130 GB per day. These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate and elapsed time, before protocol overhead—not a hosting provider’s allowance or a YouTube limit.
- Set the video and audio bitrates you plan to stream.
- Add them to estimate the combined continuous payload rate.
- Multiply by planned runtime. For a 24/7 stream, account for the whole billing period rather than a few operating hours.
- Add a margin for protocol overhead and any other streams or transfers using the instance.
- Compare the result with the provider’s current included outbound transfer, billing units, sustained network capacity, fair-use conditions, and overage charges.
A VPS advertised with a fast port does not necessarily include enough monthly transfer for continuous use. Check the plan terms themselves; no provider-specific allowance or overage price is established here.

Compare VPS plans on the same workload
Put the same stream settings and operating assumptions against every candidate plan. Compare the actual limits and capabilities rather than relying on a headline port speed or the word “unlimited.”
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| CPU and sustained performance | Whether the instance can keep your encoder workload running in real time, with headroom under continuous load. |
| Memory | Whether the complete encoder process and operating system run without sustained memory pressure during a full test. |
| Outbound transfer and network | Included monthly transfer, billing units, overage terms, fair-use rules, and sustained capacity—not just advertised port speed. |
| Location and route | Available server regions and the stability of the real outbound route to YouTube from the candidate location. |
| Persistent storage | Disk for the operating system, software, logs, and working files; add capacity if you will keep media or recordings locally. |
| Operations and support | Whether you can supervise and restart the encoder, monitor the machine, and get appropriate support for the plan. |
| Total cost | Recurring plan price plus any transfer overages or other charges at your calculated usage. |
A nearby region is a sensible starting point, but distance alone does not establish the best route or YouTube ingest performance. Test the actual route and stream stability from the location you are considering. Provider prices, allocations, and terms change; verify them directly before committing. No named provider plan or comparative benchmark is established here.

Decide how much disk you need
A stream-only VPS may need little persistent storage beyond its operating system, streaming software, logs, and working files. If you will store source videos or record output on the server, include those files in your capacity estimate. Storage needs are conditional: there is no fixed disk amount that applies to every setup.
Plan for recovery and monitoring
A VPS can keep an encoder running without your home computer, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube stream. Treat restart behavior, health checks, and a full-duration test as part of the design.

VPS or a cloud-managed streaming service?
A VPS gives you control of the encoder and its environment, but you must select and manage the instance, transfer plan, process supervision, and monitoring. If you would rather upload pre-recorded video and have a cloud service loop it to YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate option. It is #1 here as the managed alternative because it runs continuously from the cloud, accepts uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60 fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a first day free.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60 fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; monthly billing is available, and you can cancel any time.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. You can also review the upload-time calculator, cloud vs PC cost calculator, and copyright safety checklist. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
Troubleshoot common selection and setup problems
- The VPS cannot encode at the chosen settings: Check for sustained CPU pressure and encoder errors during a real workload test. If the source is compatible, stream-copying instead of re-encoding may reduce processing demand; otherwise test a more capable instance or a less demanding output.
- The stream works initially but transfer is exhausted or incurs charges: Recalculate monthly outbound use from the combined bitrate and continuous runtime, then check the provider’s included transfer, billing units, and overage terms.
- The encoder runs, but YouTube reports stream-health problems: Inspect the encoder output and network conditions, verify the configured bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance, and test from the chosen server region.
- The stream stops after a crash or reboot: Configure and test a process supervisor so it restarts the encoder, then check the service logs and YouTube stream health to confirm recovery.
- The server runs out of disk space: Check logs and working files, and revise the storage plan if media or recordings are being retained locally.
Check YouTube rights and monetization separately
A technically stable VPS does not establish that a channel or its content is eligible for any YouTube feature, nor does it resolve copyright or monetization questions. Use content you have rights to stream and consult YouTube’s current policies for the channel and material involved. A continuous stream setup is an operational choice, not a substitute for platform-policy compliance.
